First stand-alone 'Star Wars' movie to star Yoda

Report says Jedi master will get his own film

Back when Disney bought LucasFilm last year, the plan was to make a new "Star Wars" trilogy as well as stand-alone movies set within that universe. Now word has come that the first individual "Star Wars" film may star a familiar little green Jedi.

According to a loosely sourced report at Ain't It Cool News, Yoda will be the main character of a "Star Wars" film that is separate from the already announced new trilogy.

The report at AICN doesn't offer much more in the way of details, including whether the movie would focus on a younger Yoda, the elderly one from the original films, or the Jedi Master at some other stage of his life.

AICN also mentions in passing the possibility of a movie based around Jabba the Hut, the slug-like crime boss who controlled much of the planet Tatooine in the first six films.

These aren't the only "Star Wars" spinoffs that have been rumored. Director Joe Johnston ("Captain America") has indicated his desire to build a movie around the mysterious bounty hunter Boba Fett, while Vulture reported recently that Zack Snyder ("Man of Steel") was going to direct a "Star Wars" film inspired by "The Seven Samurai" -- a report that Snyder's reps denied.

But with Disney hoping to bring out a new "Star Wars" adventure "every two or three years," according to CEO Robert Iger, spin-off adventures starring supporting characters would seem to be a natural complement to the main trilogy. The first episode of that is going to be directed by J.J. Abrams and is tentatively due out in 2015.

UPDATE: Disney CEO Robert Iger confirmed to CNBC this afternoon that there will indeed be stand-alone "Star Wars" movies, and that they will be written by Simon Kinberg ("Mr. and Mrs. Smith") and Lawrence Kasdan ("The Empire Strikes Back"). "Episode VII" director J.J. Abrams is consulting on them. Iger would not reveal which characters the movies would focus on, but did say that they would come out during the same period of time as the main trilogy -- a six-year cycle beginning in 2015.

How about it, "Star Wars" fans? Does a movie about Yoda sound like a winner to you? Any other characters you'd like to see get their own starring vehicle?

That is the sound of millions of fans face-palming and then suddenly silence.
Something terrible has happened.

This is a bad idea.  The whole allure to Star Wars is the fact that George Lucas always had a knack for leaving you wanting more.  Just because you want more doesn't mean that you should have more.  Disney is going to ruin this series in an effort to milk every last cent of profit out of it.

No kidding Reverend Tiger...Typical Hollywood mistake...take a great character, that needs no more explaining, and exploit, I mean, explain it to ruin.  How much you want to bet JaJar Binks appears in this movie?  If Disney wants to make standalones, they should concentrate on less known, possiby unknonwn characters.  How about a movie about Guido (and remember that Hans shot first)...that could be an awesome tragedy.  Or perhaps, Lando?

Han Solo's smuggling days.  With Lando possibly.  Maybe how Han rescued Chewie and got the life debt.

I would like a movie about Palpatine from the time he is discovered by his master and becoming a Dark Lord of the Sith and Senator.

I have no interest in a Yoda movie honestly. One of the great things about Yoda is that he is a great master; I don't really want to see a movie about when he wasn't. Who wants to see a young punk Yoda? No one, that's who.

Have any of you guys read any of the books that have been written?  Why can't they just use those instead of making stuff up?  wouldn't that be better?

I would watch it, but only if 1). Frank Oz voiced Yoda and 2). Yoda is a puppet instead of CGI.

Hmm... Seems like overkill to me. Yoda is a great character, but personally, I think that he works better in a supporting role. Jabba the Hut would be such a bizarre choice for a spin-off film, I can't even imagine what it could be like; trying to make him into some kind of anti-hero would be a terrible idea and you couldn't exactly do an "action film" where your main character is a slug. That said, if they choose to approach it as smaller-scale, character-driven crime film, then it might actually be interesting.  Who knows?

No matter how you look at it though, making a new Star Wars film "every two or three years" is a terrible idea. I'm sure we're going to get a few great films out of this (especially with names like Michael Arndt and J.J. Abrams involved), but no one wants to watch a movie that was forced into production just to meet a quota.

I'm not necessarily opposed to stand alone spin off movies... but that would require picking the right character and having a good story with good supporting characters...

Who wants Star Wars if we're not invested in the characters and the story doesn't mean anything to us ?

You can't just crank this stuff out.... you have to have the right people collaborating and taking the right amount of time to come up with good ideas and then putting the attention to detail that's required to pull these movies off... Star Wars should always be done on a pretty grand scale and that requires work...

We DO NOT NEED OR WANT another Indianna Jones 4 !!!!!!

I like the idea of doing a movie about Lando. There are also a whole slew of characters from the books that would be great to focus on - Mara Jade (my husband and I named our daughter Mara), Jacen and Jaina, Darth Bane, etc. I don't really want to see any movies focusing on the established characters, but expanding into other areas might be ok.

For the naysayers...... Star wars started ot as a series of books. The movies did NOT come first. I have already read books with Yoda being younger. YODA IS one of the strongest Jedi's and in his early years he was the one responsible for annihilating the sith before the sith ended up being just one master and one Apprentice . SO this isn't a bad idea and I would certainly love to watch how Yoda did it !!!!!

"'Episode VII' director J.J. Abrams is consulting on them"

*sigh*

Did you guys even read the article?  Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg will be consulting on Episode VII for Abrams, not the other way around.
