'The Hobbit' receives 7 nominations from Visual Effects Society

Awards ceremony to take place in February

Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" received seven nominations from the Visual Effects Society to lead all feature films, the VES announced on Monday. Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" and Marvel's superhero film "The Avengers" each received six.

In the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture, the category that most closely corresponds to the Oscar category for visual effects, the nominees were "The Hobbit," "Prometheus," "Life of Pi," "The Avengers" and "Battleship."

"Rust and Bone," "The Impossible," "Argo," "Flight" and "Zero Dark Thirty" are competing in the category of Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Motion Picture.

Animated features "Brave," "ParaNorman," "Rise of the Guardians," "Wreck-It Ralph" and "Hotel Transylvania" received nominations in the animation category.


Television programs singled out by VES voters include "Game of Thrones," "Once Upon a Time," "Falling Skies," "Curiosity," "Munsters: Mockingbird Lane," "Hemingway & Gellhorn," "Boardwalk Empire" and "Hawaii Five-O."


Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises," which has not been faring well this awards season, received a single nomination, for its models.


Nominations were made in 24 different categories in live-action and animated film, television, commercials, video games and special projects. Nominees were selected at a number of special sessions attended by VES members on Saturday, Jan. 5.

At the ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 5, Ang Lee will be honored with the VES Visionary Award.
