Check out the first poster for Spike Lee's 'Oldboy' remake

It's basically a still from the actual movie

Consider us mildly intrigued by Spike Lee's forthcoming remake of Chan-wook Park's intense, intensely dark 2005 revenge thriller "Oldboy." Without spoiling the film, we have no idea how Lee—or any other American filmmaker, operating within, or without, the rather staid Hollywood studio system—plans to tackle "Oldboy's" more, eh, not problematic so much as difficult aspects. Narratively, the film is straight-up Hollywood: an otherwise seemingly straight-laced man is kidnapped and inexplicably imprisoned for 20 years, then abruptly released, and thereupon seeks revenge on his captors. Thematically, the film deals with lots of, uh, shall we say, icky subject matter. The consumption of a live octopus being just one innocuous example.

Bing: 'Oldboy' | Spike Lee

The film's first official poster, seen at right, is no indication at all. The only thing it illuminates is what star Josh Brolin's hair will look like in the final film. And that he looks neat in "Matrix" sunglasses. And while the image hints at a couple intriguing aspects of the film's plot, it is in no way revealing of, well, anything to the unprepared, unspoiled viewer.

What do you think, Hitlisters? Are you as curious as we are to see the finished project? If you've seen the original, how afraid are you that this Americanized remake will ruin the story? Would you rather Lee put his efforts behind a sequel to "Inside Man?" Is Lee getting shafted by mainstream Hollywood? Should he really have been given control of "42," the recent Jackie Robinson biopic? Can we possibly ask any more open-ended questions? As always, let us know in the comments, or tell us on MSN Movies on Facebook and Twitter.

Oldboy is a classic that did not need to be remade...especially by Spike Lee

There is no way an American movie can be made to compare to the original "Oldboy". Forget the violence and animal cruelty, the plot twist alone isn't made for American audiences. I expect this to be a watered-down version of a Korean classic.

Oldboy should not be remade. No way Lee will make a better version.

The Korean classic everyone talks about was based on a Japanese manga which was far better than the film. Seeing as this will be twice removed from the original material I don't have high expectations.

There are hundreds of good screenplays waiting right here with new and interesting plots and twists by American writers. The script for that movie was probably worked and worked and worked until it was at the quality it was at the wrap of that endeavor.

Why can't studios work and work and work an American script?  Why is Hollywood remaking a foreign movie when hundreds of American writers are having to jump through hoops just to get their stories read by studios?  Why has "Robin Hood" been remade at least ten times?

The American movie industry sucks right now.  It's last great original American idea was Pulp Fiction.  And that was 18 years ago. A generation of movie goers have been subjected to the big ticket mindless dribble that's been coming out of tinsel town lately.

Like any other industry that doesn't go American-made it needs to be boycotted until it does. Don't get me wrong.  I like movies from all over the world.  But the American movie industry needs to support American talent.  It's not doing that anymore.
