Jennifer Lawrence and Tom Sherak reveal the contenders for 10 of the 24 categories

By DannyMiller Jan 24, 2012 7:45AM
Here we are, finally, ready to hear the nominees for the top categories in this year's Oscar race. If you're up at this ungodly hour (it's still pitch black in Los Angeles), you're probably watching actress Jennifer Lawrence and Academy president Tom Sherak live from the packed Samuel Goldwyn Theater at the Academy's Beverly Hills headquarters on Wilshire Boulevard. The announcements aren't going to take very long. Every journalist in town is praying for some surprises and upsets just to add some spice to the biggest of all the awards shows. Still, everyone knows that "The Artist" is going to get a slew of nominations even though it's probably been seen by far less people than most of the films that will be represented today.

Here we go...

Actress in a Supporting Role

Bérénice Bejo, “The Artist”

Jessica Chastain, “The Help”

Melissa McCarthy, “Bridesmaids”

Janet McTeer, “Albert Nobbs”

Octavia Spencer, “The Help”

Kenneth Branagh, “My Week with Marilyn”

Nick Nolte, “Warrior”

Christopher Plummer, “Beginners”

Max von Sydow, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”

Actress in a Leading Role

Glenn Close, “Albert Nobbs”

Viola Davis, “The Help”

Rooney Mara, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”

Meryl Streep, “The Iron Lady”

Michelle Williams, “My Week with Marilyn”

Directing

Michel Hazanavicius, “The Artist”

Alexander Payne, “The Descendants”

Martin Scorsese, “Hugo”

Woody Allen, “Midnight in Paris”

Terrence Malick, “The Tree of Life”

Writing (Original Screenplay)

Michel Hazanavicius, “The Artist”

Annie Mumolo and Kristin Wiig, “Bridesmaids”

J.C. Chandor, “Margin Call”

Woody Allen, “Midnight in Paris”

Asghar Faradi, “A Separation”

Writing (Adapted Screenplay)

Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, and Jim Rash, “The Descendants”

John Logan, “Hugo”

George Clooney, Grant Heslov, and Beau Willimon, “The Ides of March”

“Bullhead” (Belgium)

“Footnote” (Israel)

“In Darkness” (Poland)

“Monsieur Lazhar (Canada)

“A Separation” (Iran)

Animated Feature Film

“A Cat in Paris”

“Chico & Rita”

“Kung Fu Panda 2”

“Puss in Boots”

“Rango”

Best Picture

“War Horse”

“The Artist”

“Moneyball”

“The Descendants”

“The Tree of Life”

“Midnight in Paris”

“The Help”

“Hugo”

“Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”

Whew! That was the order the names were read (really fast!) by Sherak and Lawrence. They purposely avoided alphabetical order of the Best Picture nominees this year so that people would have a harder time guessing what was coming. Some real surprises here. In the Best Actor category, I was sure DiCaprio would be honored for "J. Edgar." No nominations for Michael Fassbender or Ryan Gosling but a very happy surprise for Demian Bichir this morning. For Best Actress, I didn't think Rooney Mara stood a chance. She may have edged out indie favorites Kirsten Dunst, Tilda Swinton, and Anna Paquin.

In the supporting categories, I'm shocked that Albert Brooks didn't get nominated for "Drive" (I like Jonah Hill, but really?) and Max von Sydow was a bit of a surprise for "Extremely Loud," especially since he didn't have a single line of dialogue in the film. For the women, I'm glad Chastain made the cut but can't believe Shailene Woodley from "The Descendants" was overlooked.

No surprises in the Directing category, but a few in the Writing nominations. I didn't expect "Margin Call" or "A Separation" to be cited for original screenplay or, for that matter, "Ides of March" for adapted (making two nominations for George Clooney).

The animated category included a few films that no regular American audiences have seen (good thing the Academy members get those screeners!) but their nominations will go a long way toward getting them a theatrical run.

And this year's revised rules for Best Picture ended up giving us an odd nine nominations. Among those, I was a little surprised to see "War Horse" and very surprised to see "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close."

Looking at the complete list, here's a quick rundown of the most nominated films: "Hugo" leads the pack with 11 overall nominations, "The Artist" is close behind with 10, "Moneyball" and "War Horse" nabbed 6, and "The Descendants" and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" got 5 each.

Let the cheers, screams, and accusations begin! We'll be here with much more commentary about these and the rest of the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards. Winners will be announced at the ceremony at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood on Sunday, February 26.
