Since I spilled Diet Coke on my laptop, work was put at a standstill and the day turned into one of white hot terror. Apologies. When you've realized that you've just made the most expensive 7-11 run in your life, you tend to be filled with anxiety, regret and dread -- unless you bought a life's worth supply of Slim Jims. That could come in handy, not a 1200 dollar soda.

Anyway, we soldier on after these missteps and we talk about something that makes us happy, in my case Elaine May and her vastly underrated, near comic masterpiece "Ishtar." And here's something even greater --  Elaine May and the director's cut of "Ishtar."

Oh, I so wish I was in New York City this month.

More Johnny Depp news. This one involves (no surprise) a remake.

But ... a remake of a classic, beloved movie that may not need an update. And really, really, may not need Rob Marshall as director. But it's of course, too soon to say.

Nevertheless, it's official "The Thin Man" is going to be remade.

Here's the news from Thompson on Hollywood:

"It’s official: Rob Marshall and John DeLuca will produce a remake of The Thin Man through their LUCAMAR Productions, with Marshall directing. Johnny Depp will star and Jerry Stahl (Bad Boys II) is scripting the project. Marshall is “overjoyed” to work with Depp again (he directing him in this summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), and says; “we are looking forward to working with Warner Bros. to create a reinvention of a beloved story.” He calls it a “classy and classic project.”

"The original 1934 film was director by W. S. Van Dyke and starred William Powell and Myrna Loy (pictured). So now the question is, who should play Loy’s Nora character alongside Depp’s Nick?"
 

In addition to actor/director Kenneth Branagh's "Thor," Mel Gibson's newest movie opened, also directed by an actor/director (Jodie Foster), the anticipated "The Beaver."
 
No, not The Bieber, though it sounds like box office would have fared better had it been titled that. That's not a judgment call -- I haven't seen the movie and plan to this week. I will put my hard earned dollars down for Gibson talking to a puppet! But audiences weren't too keen on the idea.

Some harsh words from The Wrap:

"Some facts to start off with: Oasis was not the Beatles, 'Community' is not a hit television show, and Mel Gibson is no longer a viable movie star.

"This weekend proved a reality check. Audiences simply said: No, thanks.

"'The Beaver' debuted in 22 locations this weekend, with distributor Summit Entertainment expecting a per-screen average of more than $15,000 for the weekend. But the film grossed only $104,000 all told, averaging an embarrassing $4,745 per engagement."

 

Did you see "Thor" this weekend? I'm going to think yes. And I'm going to think you were a little disappointed by it. But perhaps not.

"Another cultural documentary in a summer crammed with good examples, this focuses on the sale of the possessions of legendary fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, but is really an examination of his relationship with long-time partner, in business and in love, Pierre Bergé.

"We haven’t caught this one yet, but the trailer suggests something less like an upmarket version of 'Cribs' (although fashion fiends and fans of pretty objects will likely be in hog heaven) than a touching look at a man mourning his life-long partner. Reviews were a little mixed, but mostly strong, and even having little knowledge of Saint Laurent’s life and work, we’re pretty keen to catch up with this one.

Watch a snippet of Depp on Oprah where he surprised her audience (who are yes, of course, freaking out) by inviting them all to the first screening of the newest "Pirates" movie.

Oprah always looks pretty happy when she has major movie stars on her show, but she looks absolutely radiant with Depp. That's probably just another one of his talents ...

Johnny Depp is apparently getting a little tired of smokey eyeliner, head scarves and exploding ... boats. (I don't even remember exactly what explodes in the "Pirates" movies anymore.)

Well, maybe he's not really tired of it, but he'd like to take a small break so the films remain, as he says, "special." Good call.

With that, the filmmakers will surely wait for Johnny Depp. To me, the mega talented, super unique and innovative actor makes the franchise endurable.

"Johnny Depp is already eyeing a fifth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, but he wants to hold off on the project so the films remain "special."

Depp, along with filmmakers Rob Marshall and Jerry Bruckheimer, have already shown an interest in making another "Pirates" movie, but Depp refuses to rush into it.

"He tells the Hollywood Reporter, 'It's not something where I would say, 'Let's shoot it next month to get it out by Christmas 2012. We should hold off for a bit. They should be special, just like they are special to me.'"

 

Here's some newest "Hunger Games" casting -- Wes Bentley.

Bentley who made quite a splash in "American Beauty" over ten years ago, is a welcome addition and we're glad to see he landed an interesting part. He's been missing from quality projects for too long.

Lionsgate announced a biggie today: American Beauty star Wes Bentley has been tapped to play Seneca Crane, the 74th Hunger Games Head Gamemaker. Crane oversees the games themselves, and makes a decision at the end of the first book that sets the course for Suzanne Collins’ dystopian trilogy.

"Bentley, who has been amping up his movie work since taking a short break in the mid-2000s, appeared in Jonah Hex last year. The actor joins Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Hemsworth, Paula Malcomson, Willow Shields, and several unknown actors playing tributes in the film. The Hunger Games directed by Gary Ross, will be in theaters March 23, 2012."
