Lucasfilm Admits 'Star Wars' Blu-ray Changes, Fans Threaten Boycott

How has Lucas ruined the original trilogy now?

By Corwin Neuse Sep 2, 2011 12:05PM
Remember the last scene of "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith," in which Emperor Palpatine completely undresses the myth of Darth Vader as an all-time badass by— spoiler alert — telling him he accidentally killed his wife, thus prompting a sad, guttural, unintentionally hilarious cry of "Nooooooooooooooo!?" Wasn't that awesome?

Remember watching the Ewoks beat the previously-omnipotent Stormtroopers senseless with little else but their furry little fists at the end of "Return of the Jedi," and then thinking the movie was way too entertaining and respectable? And that it needed something to make it more egregiously, outwardly awful?

No?

You may want to avoid buying, watching, or reading anything about the original "Star Wars" trilogy on Blu-ray, then.

Creator George Lucas has continued his damning propensity for "fixing" problems where none previously existed by replacing the puppet Yoda with CGI; using CGI to give those aforementioned Ewoks eyes that actually blink; and by making Vader utter another indignant "Nooooooooooooooo!" or two right before he—spoiler alert—throws Emperor Palpetine down an exhaust shaft. Also, all of Obi-Wan Kenobi's lines have been redubbed by a seemingly drunk Ewan McGregor, and Han Solo and Princess Leia now spend most of their time together in "The Empire Strikes Back" talking about how great George Lucas's upcoming "Red Tails" is going to be, in a neat piece of corporate synergy/viral marketing. (Note: some of the above may not be true. But would it really surprise you if they were?)

And, of course, all of these changes seem particularly ironic in light of the recently unearthed testimony George Lucas gave Congress in 1988, to protest the then-popular trend of colorizing old black-and-white movies:

People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society.

In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.

Attention should be paid to this question of our soul, and not simply to accounting procedures. Attention should be paid to the interest of those who are yet unborn, who should be able to see this generation as it saw itself, and the past generation as it saw itself.

Well said, sir!

Will you buy the "Star Wars" saga on Blu-ray? Or are you willing to wait until Lucas "relents" and releases an intentionally crappy-looking version of the originals as yet another insult to longtime fans? As always, let us know the extent of your apathy/frothing, barely-suppressed rage in the comments.

I don't have a problem with it because Yoda in the Phantom Menace looked a little lame, so if he fixed it with CGI that's' fine. As far as the rest goes I think it's trivial because after all he does own it.

Star Wars belongs to George Lucas.  He should be able to do as he pleases with it.  I loved it the first time. I loved it the second time and I'll love it this time.

I don't think he changed much and don't feel one way or the other about most of it.  The only real glaring change I ever found was in Episode 6 (?) when they show Obi-Wan and Anakin as spirits (after Darth Vader dies and the war is over) and they changed from the original character to use Anakin.  That seemed weird. Other than that all I've seen are improvements to make the movie look better.

Just so you all know, you can still go to Wal-Mart, Target, and Best Buy, and purchase the special editions of the dvd's which come with UNALTERED bonus discs of the original trilogies. If your so uptight about the films being altered then you wouldn't even want those films in Blu-Ray because that's a much higher resolution then when they originally were released. So stop all your whining, if you don't like it don't buy it! George already gave you unaltered dvd versions! So go take a bath with your C3PO bubble bath, put on your Darth Vader pj's  and watch those dvd's while snuggling with your stuffed Ewok, you nostalgic super geeks!  I know I will.  Wink

Look 2 deleted scenes didnt make star wars what it  is today. Star wars is great regardless and the younger generation who never saw those scenes in the theater don't care, they still love the movies because they are awesome. What people dont realize is that its his film not yours and you've been funding the changes so your to blame. If it was your art and you wanted to change it so what!

The guy has spent his whole life trying to perfect one franchise. Don't hate, Appreciate! I will be purchasing the complete saga because its a fantastic series and the re-runs on t.v don't have the deleted scenes neither so why should I care. All this **** about preserving art and culture is ridiculous its HIS ART so grow up. Its the 21st century everythings a remix! Why the hell am i blogging?

I guess George Lucas has every right to handle these films however he wants...they are his creations.  I just wish he would listen to us that have been fans from the very beginning.  I was hoping that the Blu-ray set would include every version, from the ones I grew up with, to the ones with added and redone scenes.  We love them all and just want the option to see them for what they were and what they became with technological advancements.  I think he should go back and listen to his own speech that he made.

If only George Lucas had let Joss Whedon write the first three they might be watchable.  Great ideas George, terrrrible writing.

Besides his collaboration on "Raiders of the Lost Arc" the Indiana Jones movies.

George Lucas had a single Idea, which turned into 3 films. Then made 3 totally unfit movies too make more money. My opinion Is he should have stopped with the 1st 3 movies. Which now are labeled 4, 5 and 6?

I was down to buy the 1st 3 In Blu Ray off Amazon at $39.99 for all 3.

Better wait and cancel until I see If these changes take place. IF Ewan McGregor really duped the lines, I DON'T WANT IT.

Guess I'll rent first now. George Lucas I have the remastered set of the 1st 3. Up conversion will have to do. Although I've had Blu Ray players since they started.

It as one other reviewer says. ALLS George lucas cares about now Is more money. Keep his lifestyle up depending how old he lives. I get a copy on sale within a year on Amazon or another seller. George your a big sellout!

If Lucas removes Jar-Jar Binks, I will run to WalMart and buy two copies and a blu-ray player.  Until then, I think I've seen enough.

Greedo shoots first? Not a chance.  Little do Star Wars fans know that the scene with Han shooting Greedo under the table first(!) was inspired (or copied) from a scene in a western saloon in an episode of the old TV show Gunsmoke.  Harrison Ford played a seedy character named Hobey in the 18th season episode 20 called "Whelan's Men".  He and his cohorts are sitting around a barroom table when a dispute is settled with Harrison Ford's character shooting under the table and killing his adversary.  He then stands and walks out.  And Harrison shot first.  I don't recall if he flipped the bartender a compensation tip or apologized for "the mess", though.

Now concerning Mr. Lucas making changes in his movies:  whatever.  I don't recall a law demanding I buy the new DVDs.  I have the originals editions, as well as the Special Editions, on VHS and DVD.  Which reminds me:  those who clamor for the "original theatrical releases" and buy Star wars in "Full Screen" need to just keep their mouths closed!  And another thing, the "original theatrical release" you sat in a darkened theater to watch in 1977, 80, and 82, was NOT shown in BluRay format.  It was projected in widescreen in FILM format.  Should we demand the next home theater edition to be in film?  C'mon people.

However, if Mr. Lucas is bent on "making corrections", then he should add a shadow for the snow speeder on Hoth that flies out of  the sunrise toward Han and Wampa-wounded Luke.  There is no shadow.  I look every time I watch The Empire Strikes Back,  and it grates my nerves.  And having Vader cry, "NOoooo" as he chucks Palpatine done the shaft, Mr. Lucas should remember the old addage, "A picture is worth a thousand words"' or in this case, "one word."

Star Wars on BluRay:  buy it or don't buy it?  I don't care one way or the other.  Do what you want.  It's your ninety dollars.  As for me I plan to put that money in my gas tank over the next few weeks or spend it to put food on my family's table.

So this should not be a real shocker...if you actually sat through a "Star Wars Christmas" TV special in 1978 or around there...you would see the beginning of crap from Lucas...YouTube it..it will make you lose weight for throwing up all over the place..

Lucas fails to understand that the versions we saw in the theaters are the versions we want to own.  If he wants to "improve" them--bringing them closer to his original vision--that's fine, but don't deny us the option to choose which one we want.  The completists will want them all, anyway.

His most annoying changes were the additional scenes added to the arrival at Los Issles and the entering of the Canteen in the first Stars Wars movie, deflating the entire tension/comic relief aspects of that segment. It was as if he wasn't even aware of why that segment was so good. There needed to be someone around George Lucas who could have questioned some of his decisions.

Lucas can make all the changes he wants to his movies as far as I'm concerned. What I think is **** and makes him an **** is that he then refuses to make the original theatrical versions available along side the new versions. What a dick. Screw you, George.

Nooooooooooooooo! These are by far the worst decisions lucas has ever made. Lucas already ruined Return of the jedi by flipping the Original Obi wan, Anakin, and Yoda ghosts  at the end of the movie with a version of the actors who played  Obi wan and Anakin in the prequels.  he also changed the scene with Han and Greedo in A new hope. oh lets not forget that song  number with that slave at the cantina      I think Lucas  has been listening to Walt  Disney too much,  Particularly his address at opening of Disneyland. You know the one where walt said disneyland will never be complete and disneyland   will always be expanding and changing...   Because that's what he is doing,  only he is alive and doing all on his own and He screwing up Royal

Jeez, lighten up!  If the creator of SW wants to improve it, let him.  It's his baby, not yours.

I loved the changing of the dippy ewok song, the improved special effects, and the smoother story line transitions in places.

Hey, if the demand is not overwhelming the price for the set should drop fairly soon!  :)

Ah, the simple joy of still owning a LaserDisc player and having all three episodes in their original release form (along with the Star Wars Trilogy re-release box set from the late nineties.)  I knew there was a reason for keeping that format in my home theater system.
