Disney/Marvel to Produce ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Film
The next live-action superhero mash-up will hit theaters in the summer of 2014

Are you holding out for another group of Marvel superheroes to hit the multiplex? You’re in luck—um, if you don’t mind waiting two years. According to Deadline, the untitled Marvel movie that Disney just announced would be released on August 1, 2014 (following an earlier report of a May 16, 2014 release date) is none other than an Avengers-like big-budget group superhero flick featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy. The Guardians, who last appeared in a 2008 comic reboot, consist of Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Phyla-Vell/Quasar. Never heard of ‘em? You will!
Rumor has it that the intergalactic Guardians will do battle in the live-action film with Thanos, the character seen at the end of the credit sequence in the spectacularly successful “The Avengers.” Will Disney/Marvel have another blockbuster on their hands? I think we can answer that in one word: KA-CHING!
If you can’t wait two years for your next Marvel hit, don’t forget that “Iron Man 3” is coming to theaters in May 2013 with “Thor 2” arriving in November—not to mention sequels of “Captain America” and, of course, “The Avengers” that are in the works.
No word yet on casting for “Guardians of the Galaxy.” I’m starting a write-in campaign for Kate Winslet as Gamora.
