Mere hours (minutes?) ago, we got a first glimpse of Tom Cruise returning to a post-apocalyptic, future Earth to repair robots and fight evil in the first trailer for "Oblivion." Now, we're getting the first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's sci-fi epic "After Earth," in which Will Smith and son Jaden Smith... return to a post-apocalytic, future Earth to fight evil. And stuff. Which sounds vaguely familiar for some reason. But why?Anyway, the trailer itself is a blast. Jaden looks all grown-up, and radiates pathos through his bulging movie-star eyeballs. Will Smith does the gravely-voiced authority figure thing well, playing a character named General Cypher Raige. Who makes this stuff up?? Oh, right. M. Night Shyamalan ("Signs," "The Sixth Sense," and a bunch of other crud we'd rather forget) directed the film from a script by Stephen Gaghan ("Traffic," "Syriana"). Which means we can expect decent production values and dialog that doesn't make us want to claw our ear-dums out.
As for the rest of it? Wall-to-wall CGI everything? Check. Crazed, man-eating monkies? Probable check, if Will Smith's portentous voice-over is anything to go by. Morgan Freeman bizarrely cameoing as Morpheus from "The Matrix?" Er, sadly, no. Wrong movie. You'll have to check out "Oblivion" for that one. But we digress.
What do you think, Hitlisters? Are these films as similar as we make them out to be? Which one looks better/which are you looking forward to more? Could this film mark M. Night's comeback as a serious director? Check out the trailer—posted after the break, courtesy of Yahoo!—and let us know in the comments...
