Universal Moving Forward With 'Snow White' Sequel

But not 'Battleship,' because ha ha!

By Corwin Neuse Jun 8, 2012 12:14PM
Proving once and for all that fairy tales make for better source material than board games, Universal is reportedly moving ahead with a sequel to "Snow White and the Huntsman." But not "Battleship," because that film is a huge, embarrassing bomb that will be known in the future only for ending Taylor Kitsch's mercilessly short career as a viable leading man.

Without having seen "Snow White and the Huntsman," or knowing how it ends, it's impossible to say what a sequel could be about. According to Deadline, all the principal actors have contracts for three films, so maybe... No, still no idea. Maybe Charlize Theron's Evil Queen will bounce back to wreak havoc in "The Evil Queen Strikes Back," and then the Huntsman and Snow White will finally prevail by blowing up the Magic Mirror in "Return of the Seven Dwarves." Or something.

What do you think, Hitlisters? Excited by the promise of more "Snow White" films? What do you think a "Snow White and the Huntsman" sequel could be about? And when will Chris Hemsworth have time to appear in something else besides these films, the "Thor" films, and the next "Avengers" movie?

Felt like I was watching the same character from the Twilight series.  Kristen Stewart so far is pretty one dimensional in my humble opinion.  I was disappointed in the movie but loved Charlize Theron as the evil queen.

Readers be warned:   Some of the comments included in these posts (not mine) have no spoiler alerts!!    Saw it last night.  Wasn't blown away, but I enjoyed it.  Totally agree with the LOTR comparisons, but in their defense, LOTR set a whole new precedent visually that is hard NOT to follow in these types of fantasy films.   Having heard that there may be a sequel before I saw it, I wasn't surprised by lack of a neatly tied-up ending, but I was disappointed by the sheer lack of  interesting dialogue for anyone beyond the queen and the dwarves, who got the best of it,  and frankly, wasn't thrilled with theirs either.    Was SO happy to see Stewart doing something other than the subdued / depressed teenager roles I've seen far,  she may actually show herself a more dimensional actor after all.   Also not thrilled with the lack of explaination for some things, like what the heck was the white stuff the queen bathed in and why did she do it?    And why do movie companies insist on showing things in the trailers that do not show up in the movie?

This movie had some beautiful scenes and costumes but the story development  was poor. They had a great opportunity to show off the character interactions between the "love triangle" and build up the overall love story.  The actors could have shown much more of their acting skills which would have made the fight scenes all the more believable. The fairy scenes were extremely hokey.  My husband called this "Lord of the Rings-light" - this one missing several key pieces though to make it great.   We would not pay money to see another one of these over-hyped films.

My husband and I saw the movie last night and we both liked it.  I agree that the story had some holes but went into it knowing that it was part of a series so hopefully said holes will be plugged.   I appreciated the overall beauty of the film and the fact that it didn't attempt to jump on the current 3D/money grab wagon.  Kristen Stewart played the role well; I didn't notice her bite her lip even once.  I hope that as more films come out that her character will evolve from uncomfortable to confidant and powerful. It would be fun to see KS portray confidance!!  I look forward to the upcoming films.

Have not seen the movie, so I cannot speak to how a sequel would be.  I do plan on seeing it though.  What I wanted to address was your comments on Battleship.  A group of us went to see it, men, women and kids (around age 10).  We all enjoyed it and commented on why it didn't do better in the theater.  I have a hunch as to why.  I think people put too much stock in what other people say about a film.  I never follow what the critics say about a movie, or friends and family for that matter.  I know what I like.  Just because someone who sees a movie thinks it's crappy doesn't mean the next person will share that opinion.  That's the beauty of having an opinion.  I loved Battleship, you hated it.  We both have our opinions, and I personally think that people should choose to see or not see a movie based on their own likes and dislikes not those of  someone else.  Just my opinion :)

I have to agree what someone said above about Battleship.  Despite the reviews, this was a good movie.  People hung up with this movie being named after a board game are just being dumb.  The reference to the game itself is abstract at best.  This was a good, alien vs. human genre movie, better than many that have come out recently, and was a nice departure from all the superhero and thriller movies that have been out every single weekend.  I took my 13 year old daughter, my girlfriend and her 15 year old son to the movie and we all really like it.  I would have seen the sequel.  And I definitely would have seen the sequel to Battleship before i go see the sequel to Snow White.  It was a good movie but the story was over at the end, anything after would just be to see if they could cash in for a second time.

again, the movie ending dropped.....but as i hear of the sequel (3 total) it makes sense the story hasnt ended.  i drooled alot in my popcorn watching CT.  then at the end as the childhood friend was in the final triumphant scenes, the huntsman wasnt.....but he finally did show up.  SW got perky then.

will see the sequel, and the last.

@SC Susie

SW is based on a story from the 1500's ( germany i think) so the beats out JRR T  LOTR  by a few centuries.

the EQ went down into the goop. what says the EQ cant rise from the goop?   i found it odd after SW stared down the ogre at the bridge, the ogre wasnt at the big battle.  the fairies?  WD's SWatSD had it and was also hokey.  i dont think KS was "the fairest in the land".  CT had it all over her.  8 dwarves -  i dont think they had names like in the WD version.  if u check the list of the dwarves in this movie some were big name actors.  that was cool.  ok, as for LOTR  and SWatH scenery, LOTR wins out by a bit but both were good.  ah yes, the love triangle. SW was sad at the end because the H wasnt there....but then she saw him.  big smile.   the friend from her youth?  was she or wasnt she interested?

i wud see the next one to see how CT is re-incarnated  -  a witch you know.  the 3some may be in the next film.  its fantasy, it was more interesting to watch that the other lame SW movies.

Without even seeing this new incarnation of "Snow White"...the only reason for a sequel or two is for Hollywood to make more money off of a classic fairytale!  With 3 updated versions of the "Snow White Story" already...it's a shame that original stories have been outsourced by remakes of older films.  By the way, the reason "Battleship" bombed is simple.  It was a game that boys (and probably a few girls) could participate in and finish in less than 20 minutes.  Who wants to sit in a movie theatre and stare at a film that requires no strategy.  Passive inactivity gets old very fast!

This was a good looking movie and Charlize was great... but the story ending was poor.. and Snow's true love is the Huntsman!??? Sorry, that's too far off from what the heart of what this fairy tale is all about. Maybe that is why a sequel is possible and hey can get it back on track. .. but how does the Evil Queen come back to life? (I know.. magic!) Maybe that will also address the line the Queen spoke of how Snow white could also be her salvation!?

Spoiler alert: I'm thinking they'll play up the love triangle between Liam, Snow, and Huntsman. I think a sequel would be a fine opportunity to bring in Rose Red.

I saw this movie the other night. Have to say, I was a little disappointed. Probably will not pay top dollar to see the next two.

Gave the first one a shot just to be nice, and it was horrible. Just boring and predictable, not memorable at all. Will NOT see the sequel.

I liked the movie, Charlize Theron overacted a little but the scenes, costumes and battle sequences were okay, even though it did remind me of a low end version of the Lord of the Rings....

If you would have bothered to see the movie, or would have read any of the other articles on this subject you would know that it is highly unlikely that Charlize Theron will return in the next movie. Terrible.

There is no way I would watch this movie again or any sequels. Snow White had bad accents, bad acting, bad dialogue, and bad directing.

Just because something pulled in money on opening weekend doesn't mean it is a hit. In order for it to be a hit it needs to perform well for a few weeks.

Didn't see "Snow White and the Huntsman". Not a fan of Kristen Stewart. Liked "Mirror, Mirror" in-

stead; Lily Collins was far more attractive. No interest in a sequel.
