J.J. Abrams turned down 'Star Wars: Episode VII'
Which will either please or disappoint fanboys
If Disney picked him for Star Wars Episode VII he could write and direct!
In terms of short form story telling (2 hr movie vs episodic tv) Abrams does a great job but I am glad he passed on SW. . Lucas was always trying to tell a story that was far vaster than his media allowed so the heart of it got lost. In that respect Joss Whedon would be a good fit to bring the focus back to the characters vs the 'universe'. But at the same time Whedon has issues with large scaled battles (don't get me wrong- I LOVE Serenity and The Avengers but you got to admit those large battle scenes were soooo loosey goosey) Peter Jackson is good at those battle scenes but without a tight script he can deviate into weirdness. I think the best bet right now would be to go with a no-name director.
Really at this point it doesn't matter who directs it, right now it's all about who's writing it. If the script sucks, the script sucks, no amount of directorial tinkering will fix it.
Christopher Nolan! He did an awesome job on the batman trilogy, and inception.
Too bad Irvin Kershner is not around. Ridley Scott would be perfect to capture a dark version. No more Jar Jar binks, or wookies yelling like Tarzan!
