The 2012 Gotham and Indie Spirit Awards kick off awards season

Winners and nominees include 'Bernie,' 'Moonrise Kingdom,' 'Beasts of the Southern Wild'

And so it begins. Not a few days after Thanksgiving, a full month out from the end of the year proper, and our industry's first awards and nominations are being doled out before critics' groups come around with their own glowing endorsements of the year's finest films and performances.

In keeping with tradition, the Gotham Awards fired their first shots across the bow last night, with Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" taking Best Feature and the heavily acclaimed "How to Survive a Plague" winning Best Documentary. Benh Zeitlin won Best Director for "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (pictured above), the cast of "Your Sister's Sister" took home Best Ensemble Performance, and Breakthrough Actor went to "Middle of Nowhere's" Emayatzy Corinealdi. Their trademark Best Film Not Playing in a Theater Near You award was granted to "An Oversimplification of Her Beauty."

Meanwhile, the Independent Spirit Awards followed with their own nominations this morning. You can find that full list after the jump, where "Beasts," "Moonrise," "Nowhere" and "Plague" unsurprisingly doubled up their chances for golden glory. The Spirit Awards will be held, as always, the night before the Oscars on February 23rd.
