Denzel Washington Is 'The Equalizer'

Sony flick will start production next April

By Corwin Neuse Jul 24, 2012 7:19AM
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures has set an April 8th start date for "The Equalizer," a thriller based on the eponymous TV show that could become Denzel Washington's first franchise.

The premise? Denzel will play the "Equalizer" of the title, an enigmatic former special-forces operative turned drifter vigilante who travels around fighting injustice wherever he finds it. Which makes this project sound a lot like Tom Cruise's upcoming "Jack Reacher," doesn't it? Except for that Denzel has an actually intimidating physical presence/is actually a good actor/probably won't ruin public perception of the movie with, say, a poorly timed, well-publicised divorce, ever-ongoing tabloid drama, and repeated inquiries into his religious affiliations.

No director has been hired yet for "The Equalizer," although talks are reportedly underway with Pierre Morel ("Taken"), Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive"), Gavin O’Connor ("Warrior") and Gareth Evans ("The Raid: Redemption"). Not a bad list.

What do you think, Hitlisters? Excited for Denzel to return to a higher-profile project? Does this project really sound that similar to "Jack Reacher," or are we seeing things? As always, let us know in the comments...

The Equalizer wasn't a drifter. McCall had a great apartment in Manhattan, where he had a group of compatriots that he called on from time to time for help.

If you're a "Fan" which I am Denzel watching him act brings acting to any movie he is in. So this would be a refreshing look for this series and yes he would be able to hack it.

I feel Mr. Washington's character is more like James Bond. His physical being, suave demeanor and acting competency take him far beyond any role Tom Cruise will play in Jack Reacher. Equalizer should be very good with Denzel

(just an opinion)

If Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive)n is going to direct it, please, please, please keep it in the 80's like the original series and make sure that Cliff Martinez (Drive) does the soundtrack.

How can they cast Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher?  That's like casting Pee Wee Herman as Hercules.......

I think Denzel has the chops for it. I think Wesley Snipes would be a good choice. Matt Damon was pretty good in the Bourne trilogy. How about Adam Beach heas has chops...

Though I like Denzel Washington, I would prefer Brit actor Richard Armitage in this role.

I am a big fan off "The Equalizer" and Robert McCall was not a drifter and although at one time hewas a 'Special Forces" operative he was an ex secret agent. Mr. Washington is a very good actor, but Bruce Willis would nave been a better choice in my mind. Why is it the Hollywood types always want to put their spin on something that worked and reinvent the wheel..egos ugh!

funny to make denzel look good the writer has to disparage another actor. Tom Cruise is actually blamed in this peice for the fact that the tabloids cant get enough of his personal business. The whole story seemed shady to me.

I loved the TV, have looked for it online & DVD. I think Denzel would play a good Robert McCall. Edward Woodard was awesome. Denzel needs to work on the stern serious face. Can't wait for this to come out.

No, no, no! I realize the Equalizer was a fictional character but having Denzel play the character, which was brilliantly played by British Edward Woodward, is like Vince Vaughan as James Rockford or doing a remake of Shaft with Colin Farrell or Vin Diesel as Shaft or doing a movie of Dickens' Oliver Twist with Morgan Freeman as Fagan. Although it doesn't apply to all fictional characters because not all fictional characters are so closely defined or associated with certain looks or character, some things just don't fit. Cedric the Entertainer is a great comedian and Eddie Murphy a good actor but I don't believe making African American versions of some tv or film classics is any different or any less wrong than casting John Wayne as Genghis Khan or Ricardo Montalban or white actors as Indians was back in earlier Hollywood history and the African American versions of the Odd Couple, the Honeymooners, Dr. Doolittle weren't as good as the originals. Period. And neither will a Denzel Equalizer.

I really don't like this.  I like Denzel Washington, but I was a fan of the series and I don't think that this would be good for him

What is with all this garbage of changing original tv shows, fictional literature or classic movies by having the main characters or major supporting characters suddenly reincarnate into women (Dr. Watson) or completely changing the ethnicity of the original character (James West is now an African American when Will Smith takes the role, Tonto reportedly is going to be Johnny Depp for example). Hey I've got an idea. Let's remake Melville's Moby Dick and cast Will Ferrell as the native American (don't recall if was Aleut or other) crew member and Meryl Streep as Captain Ahab. This kind of casting and remake is getting ridiculous.

Bad choice guy's..Denzel cant hack it,it's way above his skill level. This was an amazing British TV series starring the incredible Edward Woodward, Cant you Hollywood buffoons find another more stylish actor to do this part? Edward Norton, Matt Damon or Mark Wahlberg come to mind`. Now they are real actors
