Star Wars to go Blu in September 2011

The Blu-ray release of the six "Star Wars" films has been announced for September 2011

LucasFilm and Twentieth Century Fox have announced a Fall 2010 release of all six Star Wars films on Blu-ray, in two separate "trilogy" sets and a single nine-disc "Complete Saga" set with exclusive supplements.

What the announcement doesn't make clear is which versions are getting the HD upgrade: the original theatrical releases or the digital make-overs with new effects (and the still controversial reworking of the Han-Guido cantina shoot-out).

From the press release:

The most anticipated Blu-ray release ever – the Star Wars™ Saga – emerges from light speed this September 2011. For the first time, all six of George Lucas’ epic films (Episodes I-VI) are united in one complete set. Fans worldwide are able to pre-order now with online retailers.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release Star Wars in three distinct sets to meet the needs of every Star Wars fan:

-          Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray (9-disc Set includes all six films)

-          Star Wars: Prequel Blu-ray Trilogy(3-disc set includes Episodes I-III)

-          Star Wars: Original Blu-ray Trilogy (3-disc set includes Episodes IV-VI)

STAR WARS: THE COMPLETE SAGA ON BLU-RAY will feature all six live-action Star Wars feature films utilizing the highest possible picture and audio presentation, along with three additional discs and more than 30 hours of extensive special features including never-before-seen deleted and alternate scenes, an exploration of the exclusive Star Wars archives, and much more.

Seeing how the Death Star Destruction scene from Ep. IV is the Special Edition veriety, I think we can be guaranteed that the blu-ray release will be the Special edition.

FAIL on the Guido comment. That was just sad.

Once again some critic who knows nothing other than what he's "read" in other media tries to get it right, and fails. Sean, before you open the Guido (GREEDO) can 'o worms, please just admit that you know very little about how Lucas has marshmallowed all his earlier / better work by reworking multiple scenes. Check out the guns to flashlights and walkie-talkies chase scene in ET then report back. It's his work though. Let him ruin it once again. I will not be purchasing the later care bear versions of classics.

This is going to be an awesome release! I can't wait. I'm a vivid Star Wars fan and I can't wait for this release. I also think it's going to be the updated version of the original trilogy and it's going to be cool to see the Death Star's destruction (both of them) and the duel on Mustafar in HD on Blu Ray.

I wonder what the alternate scenes and the special feature will be.

Either way, I eagerly wait this release and I wish that it could be sooner.

May the Force Be With You.
