Summer of luck
Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' isn't just a hit—it's a meme

Even though the internet has decimated the music industry, it hasn't done away with hit songs. If anything, it has made hits even more universally available—not just for fans to listen to, but to participate in, remix, revisit, revise, lather, rinse, repeat. Nowadays it seems a song just isn't truly huge until it becomes the subject of fan tributes, celebrity cover versions, parodies and the inevitable burn-out. The latest song to become so popular as to transcend mere songness and become a full-blown meme? Daft Punk's increasingly inescapable "Get Lucky."
In the few weeks it has been on the airwaves, the disco-friendly tribute to staying up all night for nefarious purposes has been the subject of a straight ahead cover by America's best-respected rock band:
AND, the subject of a loving parody by America's best late night TV band:
AND, as of today, the song became a bona fide meme when some enterprising A/V nerd with lots of time to kill cut together this fascinating supercut of President Obama singing the celebratory lyrics to the song one word (and one speech) at a time:
It can't be long before "Get Lucky" fever breaks, but before it runs its course, we can all look forward to more gems like the above.

Daft Punk's new disc of songs is awesome, simply because it's not the expected set of EDM anyone expected. And "Get Lucky" is the unexpected delight of the summer, sailing over the rest of the summer tunes in the way "You Can Call Me" did.

Must admit I don't care for the new cd. Not really what I was expecting.
