That 'Thing' he does

Alec Baldwin's way with the musician interview

By percy thrillington Apr 4, 2013 3:17AM
So, everyone has a podcast, but everyone is not Alec Baldwin. The man who has spent so much of the past three decades vacillating between being a leading man and one of the best character actors alive has now taken on a new role—podcast host. And here's the thing about his podcast, Here's the Thing, which airs bi-weekly in a heavily edited version on New York's WNYC-FM: it's fantastic. While interviewing his celebrity guests, who range from Lena Dunham to Andrew Luck, Baldwin is voluble, articulate, hilarious, curious and quick witted, but never more so than when talking to musicians. Aside from his obvious reverence for music, his specific kind of fandom leads him into conversations both surprising and illuminating. And he's equally versant in classical and popular forms. Best of all is his naked hero-worship of blatantly unhip icons like Billy Joel, Peter Frampton, Herb Alpert, and others, which reframes the whole fame mechanism and makes the star of the show—who turned 55 yesterday—all the more endearing and impressive.

Unlike most celebrities these days Alec Baldwin is worthy of adulation. He's smart and genuinely funny and as far as his career, marches to the beat of his own drum. He walked away from a successful franchise playing Jack Ryan and people dismissed him and called him a fool. But in the intervening years he's carved out a distinctive, one of a kind niche for himself. And I like his politics. Anyone that can anger right wing tools the way he does is alright in my book.

He deserves credit for his work and talent.  He doesn't hesitate to play any part well, from being a train conductor in a show for kids or being an adult in a serious role, he does it all very well, which more than can be said for a lot of people, who came along when he did or who are just now breaking into the industry.  He will go down in history as one of the best and most achieved.

I have grown to really, really like Alec Baldwin.  He is funny, charming and can act his way out of a wet paper bag.  I think his roll on 30 Rock and his stints on SNL have helped him blossom.  Yes, he is outrageous and quick to anger  at times but to me it all comes with the package.  I am thrilled he is married again and I hope to God it lasts.  Keep it up Alec, I have a feeling we have yet to see the best from you.
