Old 97's

Bob Dylan, We'd Like to Introduce You to the Fratellis

By Xgau Feb 11, 2011 4:43AM

Old 97's: The Grand Theatre Volume One (New West)

The punk-come-lately intensity of Rhett Miller's first three songs is so far from their silly old alt-country pigeonhole that when second songwriter Murry Hammond moseys to the mic to deliver the Marty-Robbins-come-even-later "You Were Born to Be in Battle" they could be a separate-and-unequal band. After that, however, Miller pipes down without giving up. He credits "Champaign, Illinois" to Bob Dylan for the excellent reason that it (thoroughly) rewrites "Desolation Row," and if Uncle Bob really wants to shake things up some night he should master the lyric, which at this point in history is more apropos than the original. Soon Hammond's "You Smoke Too Much" is fitting right in. As together as can be expected, and as Miller requests with a hint of desperation, "Please Hold On While the Train Is Moving." A MINUS

Old 97's: Mimeograph (New West)

Well after you realize they have no business covering "Rocks Off" because they're not the Rolling Stones, "Rocks Off" continues to rock. Then there's a Fratellis song about fandom rescued from Britfan oblivion, an early R.E.M. song with every word enunciated by lit guy Rhett Miller, and David Bowie's greatest song with the possible exception of "TVC-15" (which, really now, isn't the Old 97's' kind of thing). A cover band? Why not? B PLUS

Ryan: "You Say You Don't Love Me"* - Buzzcocks

*probably not the sentiment you had in mind, but hey...

I probably go for oversincere over articulate - maybe that's why I don't much care for the Go-Betweens? Not that I'm doubting their sincerity, mind you.

Re: "Bon Bon Vie", I like the song so much that I'm willing to overlook its bad French.

Two I just got from sifting through my best songs of 2010.

"In My Eyes" - Robyn
"One Life Stand" - Hot Chip

Never fear, no matter, ain't no thang, gracias G. A passing situation.

With such a sentiment I'll have trouble filtering out overly sincere, so.

"God Only Knows" - The Beach Boys
"Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)" - Arcade Fire
"The Book Of Love" - The Magnetic Fields
"Out Of The Blue" - Julian Casablancas
"Redundant" - Green Day
"Hysteric" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
"You're My Best Friend" - Queen (seriously)
"Favorite Thing" - The Replacements
"Here" - Pavement
"I Didn't See It Coming" - Belle And Sebastian

That's all I got with a quick breeze through.  I have nothing but time so if nothing suffices, I could have another go.

A little too familiar. "Book of Love" is one of our songs.

Hrmmmmmmmmmmm.

Let me look through my (gigantic) library.  Instantly popping to mind are "Tunnels" and "The Book Of Love" but I doubt you want either.

Joey, while you're up, help me find a perfect love-song lyric about wanting to be with somebody for the rest of your life, one that's articulate but not oversincere.

EDIT: Please.

You'd think I'd find one on this thread but nothing has quite hit the spot yet. "Sassy Brat" has come the closest.

Up all night because I do that a lot.  Barreling through PJ Harvey's entire discography because I don't know how to start this review.  Glad to see Pitchfork giving it an 8.8.  Means about as much as a Grammy (mayhaps a bit more), but more recognition for something great is always a good thing.

Thanks Bob for including my favorite lyric ever:

We were born and raised in New York City
Fell in love in Central Park
I really love New York City
Still number one in my heart

Gimme the bon
Gimme the bon, bon
Gimme the bon, bon, bon, bon, bon, bon, bon, bon vie
Gimme the good life (Give it to me)

Gimme the bon, bon, bon, bon, bon, bon, bon, bon vie
Oh, gimme the good life (Oho, baby)

Cam -- The Tatums are actually from Tennessee -- one of my ancestors was a famous judge and had a hand in that state's constitution.  He was of course, incredibly corrupt and probably owned one of Art Tatum's ancestors.  I did grow up in Birmingham, which is the greatest city in Alabam.  (You can travel across this entire land...)  Otherwise, I'm your basic preppy Californian.

Pretty damn cool list. Thanks, as always.

EDIT: I was hoping that would just appear as "****".

I did this very fast and Carola wants to tweak it--Oh Yoko rather than Getting Better, left off Walking Song and Sexual Healing. Lots of Our Songs here. As stands: Heat Wave (Carola's fave song of all time), Jackie Wilson Said, You Wear It Well, You Send Me (Aretha Franklin), Around the Way Girl (which C didn't remember at first), Good Enough, Let's Get Married, Wisconsin Honeymoon, My House (Reed), Sassy Brat, Getting Better, Monday Morning Rock, One More Weekend, Little Eyes, N'Ka Willy (Mamani Keita), Bon Bon Vie, Then.

Reflexively doing the same later; your interpretation makes it sound like "A Quick One While He's Away" or something (which honestly wouldn't be awesome in anyone's hands except SY).

My v-day playlist by the way:

allo darlin' - kiss your lips
hayes carll - drunken poet's dream
old 97's - buick city complex
r.e.m. - electrolite
go-betweens - right here
liz phair - see the light (unreleased, possibly her most gorgeous)
sugar - your favorite thing
taylor swift - sparks fly
soulja boy - blowing me kisses (from his third, which i called an A-, curious what fans of the first two think)
the bird and the bee - kiss on my list
kanye west - hell of a life
robyn - indestructible (a late favorite)
the apples in stereo - sunndal song
jay-z - venus vs. mars
pony up! - shut up and kiss me
no doubt - underneath it all (softened on this one over time)
new york dolls - looking for a kiss
the xx - vcr
the long winters - pushover (from one of those rare wrongful duds, always assumed because of john roderick's frustrating/intriguing time signatures)
tokyo police club - favourite color
the beach boys - i was made to love her
the blow - parentheses (unbelievably sweet song on an unremarkable album)
weezer - trainwrecks (ditto)
tv on the radio - lover's day
wilco - you and i
x - the world's a mess, it's in my kiss
yo la tengo - center of gravity
miley cyrus - 7 things (incredibly underrated on decade lists)
lucinda williams - i just wanted to see you so bad
raphael saadiq - let's take a walk (gotta have sex)

think that's all of em

So the lil' woman and me just got back from a V-day weekend and I see this blog took some real interesting turns...fave television shows, etc.

Re: TV, I really got into In Plain Sight after Xgau recommended it at B&N last year.  Happy to hear it got renewed and a new season starts soon.

So, Xgau, care to share the final track listing of your V-day playlist?

Michael also-  Yup, I'm in NC now, but I grew up in AL. Mobile to be precise. (Wet Willie, Dr. Hook, Jimmy Buffett, Hank Aaron, Satchel Paige.)  I'm betting you are from Birmingham? Many famous Birmingham Tuckers. (I'm resisting a drive-by Tucker pun).

Michael-- I'm not so sure I am Southern rock lovin' so much as Southern rock defendin'. I've surprised myself here by sticking up for metal (which I really don't listen to almost at all-- but hey, one more time for That Metal Show!) and prog (a very minor part of my musical appetite) also. Somehow I feel the need to stick up for these genres, which at this point in time seem like the loser crowds in high school.

It is of course possible that I completely misinterpreted the lyric of "Female Machanic." With SY, however, that is more often the case than not. When I have the time I'm going to relisten from a male POV.

Tonight it was "Dust In The Wind" followed by "Over the Hills and Far Away" with an encore of "Stairway to Heaven". They're the only 3 songs I still know how to play on the guitar.
