Get To Know: Syd The Kid
The Lone Female Ranger of Odd Future

Who: Syd the KidFrom: Los Angeles, CA
Why You Should Get To Know Her: Because she's the only female in her crew (and she has the most groupies).
Chances are, if you aren't very fluent in speaking Odd Future, you would never even know there's a girl in the group. You probably couldn't even tell in photos, as OFWGKTA's first lady, sits amongst the fellas like she's just one of the guys. Syd the Kid (or sometimes Syd tha Kid or Syd the Kyd), is Odd Future's producer, DJ, and their engineer. Her production style is fundamentally different from someone like, Tyler, the Creator, since despite her foray into androgyny, her musical intricacies have a feminine touch. It's also been rumored that the Odd Future member with the most female groupies is in fact Syd. Then there's her singing...
Syd's voice is Neo Soul-drenched and ethereal, exhibiting the abstract elements that make her akin to Odd Future. However, her skills stand strong enough alone to ensure she will have a well rounded solo career should she exit the halls that Tyler built. Previously, the only Syd sung track was the song "Flashlights," the gently Auto-Tuned teaser posted above. Then this past week, a track called "Love Song" circulated in anticipation of a soon to be project of Syd's called Internet, not-so-ironically the place where Odd Future's fame was built.
The remarkable aspect of an artist like Syd the Kid is that she proudly dons a hoodie and a fade (she did wear a dress to her prom though) and walks through the doors most women in music have been scared or discouraged from entering. Production, engineering, deejaying, all of these elements of music are male-driven, yet Syd is achieving them one soundbyte at a time. Remember that '80s film Just One Of the Guys where the girl dresses like a boy and goes to a different high school to enter a journalism contest and wins? Well, that's what it looks like Syd is doing. The only difference is, we know she's a girl and when she opens her mouth she sure as hell sings like one.
Proving Tyler and Hodgy aren't the only skilled producers and Frank Ocean isn't the only skilled crooner in Odd Future, Syd the Kid is a Renaissance Woman. The Jane of All Trades will one day master them all, perhaps opening more doors for girls with an MPC fetish.
