Hip-Hop purists often complain that today's current generation of MCs doesn't pay homage to its predecessors. Rising rapper Joey Bada$$ clearly doesn't feel that way as he recently got up with legendary producer DJ Premier for a collabo that is aptly titled "Unorthodox."
In an exclusive behind-the-scenes video filmed at DJ Premier's NYC-based HeadQCourterz Studio, the MC and the producer discuss influences, their mutual respect and a look into their creative process.
The track will be released for free download exclusively at greenlabelsound.com on Monday (January 14th), the week of Joey Bada$$' 18th birthday.
The young rapper, along with his Progressive Era crew, has been making waves since his debut mixtape was released through his partnership with Cinematic Music Group and Creative Control. Joey also recently made his late night television debut with an astounding performance on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" and released a new mixtape last month along with Progressive Era.
Long inspired by the seminal "Moment of Truth" album from Gang Starr, Joey's respect for Premier, someone he considers, "an icon," runs deep. Green Label Sound contacted the legendary producer who noted that he, "reminds me of how we felt at his age and how I feel now," about music. Joey added that, "I really embrace my youth... I'm just making music, having fun, living life."
What do you think "Unorthodox" will sound like?
