Dixie Chicks news: Natalie Maines solo album and tour coming in 2013

Trio set to reunite for Canadian festival next summer

The Dixie Chicks have been laying low in recent years, but we could be hearing a lot more from them in 2013, particularly lead singer Natalie Maines, who has a solo album and tour in the works.

Maines has been revealing details of the album, and a planned tour, in a series of tweets. On Dec. 19, Maines tweeted “Happy Natalie Maines finished her album day everybody!” She later revealed the album’s title (“Mother”) and release date (May 7, 2013). She also announced via Twitter, “I’ll be doing a solo tour this summer.”

The album title is likely taken from the Pink Floyd cover song Maines recently recorded for the soundtrack album of the documentary “West of Memphis: Voices for Justice,” which hits stores Jan. 15. The film tells the story of three teenagers, dubbed the West Memphis Three, who were convicted of murdering three 8-year-old children and spent 18 years in prison while supporters protested their innocence. A portion of the album’s proceeds directly benefit the West Memphis Three.

Meanwhile, the Dixie Chicks have been announced as the July 13 headliners for Canada’s Craven Country Jamboree replacing Lady Antebellum, which had to cancel due to band member Hillary Scott’s pregnancy.

The festival is set for July 11-14 in Craven, Saskatchewan, and the other days’ headliners are Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw. Additional scheduled performers include Scotty McCreery, Phil Vassar, Brantley Gilbert, Sawyer Brown, Gloriana, High Valley, Randy Travis and Bill Anderson.

The Chicks are expected to play a greatest hits set at the festival. So far, it’s their only tour date announced for 2013.

Miss the Dixie Chicks!  Love them and dissapointed in comments below. I feel lucky to live in a country that promotes freedom of speech and beliefs. Glad I don't hate others based on different opinions other than my own.  They are incredibly talented and added so much to the country music community- cant believe a harmless comment created such controversy. Has anyone been to a Hank Williams Jr concert???  Talk about offensive and hateful.

I am a disabled vet and spent two and a half years in the jungles of southeast asia.  One of the things I fought for was every Americans right the express thier opinions about any thing, anytime, anywhere.  At least that's what I thought freedom of speech was all about.

Natalie Maines can record all the albums she wants. Her career is over!

The last "tour" the Ditzy Chicks did was so poorly received that they cancelled the U.S. part before it was finished due to lack of ticket sales and inability to find radio stations that would sponsor their appearances.

The only place they got decent turn outs for their concert dates was in Canada. The last radio station I worked for cleared their play list from our computers to make sure they didn't pop up on our play lists.

In short Natalie...you and the Chicks can stuff it. You're done!

It'll have to be a solo tour.  No one else would be willing to tour with the stupid uppity Islamist beaches.

The comment that sparked the outrage was made as I was graduating basic training.  It broke my heart, I was a big Dixie Chicks fan.  That being said, I will not bad mouth them, I wish them all the best but I refuse to listen to their music or support them as I do not agree with how they represented themselves.  As it was their choice to voice their opinion, it is my choice to not support them.  I wish no ill will, and I hope other country fans who were disappointed in what they said are able to simply ignore them, there is no need to threaten or hope to inspire violence.  I will not be listening to this new album, or attending the reunion tour (obviously), and I hope to hear covers of my favorite Dixie Chicks songs soon so I can listen to them without betraying my values.

Funny thing is....when I pay money to buy a ticket to go to a concert...I'm paying to hear them sing. I am NOT paying to hear that person's, group or bands political opinion about anything.

If she wants to get off the stage and give an interview about her political opinion...fine.

If she wants to speak at a political rally....fine

If she wants to donate money to whatever charities she likes...fine.

If she wants to sell tickets for anyone interested in listening to her political views...I'm even fine with that.

I do have a huge problem with her using a concert as a political soapbox for her own views. People paid money and ended up being a hostage audience.

MPO is that Natalie Maines is a megalomaniac, she can't seem to understand that the entire world doesn't revolve around her.

Hope she is "big hit" in Red China and France.  She/they are done in America.  Maybe she and Jane Fonda a hook up for a duet.

@imnotthejudge - Interesting comment. So let me see if I understand
- Its OK for the Dixie Chicks to make THEIR comment.
- Its Ok for you to make YOUR comment
- But anyone who disagrees with the Dixie Chicks represent "Whats is wrong with this country"?

The Dixie Chicks can say WHATEVER they want...but they CLEARLY don't know who their audience is!! I am not a hard core country fan...but even I know that country music listeners are for the most part VERY PRO AMERICAN, and dont want to hear their comments on Bush ( r whoever). If they really wanted a sympathetic audience...they should have said that in front of a "Rage against the Machine"  or "Green Day" crowd.

Either way...their fans spoke,,,and didn't like what they said, and have a right to speak their mind as well. Or do they not get a say?

Love her music and her voice but she was immature and stupid to mock our President in a foreign country.  Hope she has grown up.

Wow, Natalie makes one comment about being embarrased about being from the same state as the president at the time and this is what everyone takes out of it?  The ignorance in this country is astounding and embarassing.  Do any of you realize how many other "celebrities' made similar comments and no one cared?  I am happy the Dixie Chicks are getting back together, even if it is for one concert (hopefully more) because they made good music (my opinion) and were the most popular country band before that comment was made.  How quickly we turn on our own... sad.  If you don't like their music, that is fine, you don't have to listen to it, but these comments are what is wrong with our country.
