Hunter Hayes takes CMA new artist of the year honors
Hayes was a first-time nominees this year
Last year’s CMA new artist of the year The Band Perry handed off that prize to a delighted Hunter Hayes a few moments ago.
Hayes, a first-time nominee and winner, beat out several more veteran artist in the category, including Lee Brice and Love and Theft, as well as contemporaries Brantley Gilbert and Thompson Square.
He recently had a No 1 hit with “Wanted,” which he performed on the show.
Backstage in the media room, Hayes spoke about the new artist prize being the one "I saw a lot of my favorite artists achieve early in their careers."
