The Pussy Riot Archipelago

Convicted punks exiled to remote prisons

By percy thrillington Oct 22, 2012 1:36PM
If, like many, you tuned out of the Pussy Riot story when it became a cringeworthy cause celebre for bandwagon jumping cred vampires like Madonna or when Hot Topic reportedly sold "Free Pussy Riot" t-shirts, you may want to check in with the latest report from Reuters, which reveals that the two members of the art collective convicted of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" after staging a protest performance in a church, have been sent to remote prisons far from Moscow and not even their lawyers know where. Because the conversation about Pussy Riot was successfully derailed by people arguing over whether or not they were a "real" band, the larger issue, which is that the Russian government remains in the business of cruelly exiling its dissident artists (read your Solzhenitzyn) despite the fall of Communism and the rise of organized crime.
MOSCOW, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Two female members of Russian punk group Pussy Riot convicted of protesting against President Vladimir Putin in a cathedral have been sent to prisons far from Moscow despite requesting to serve out their terms in the capital, a lawyer said on Monday.
Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, were convicted of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" in August and sentenced to two years in jail, a punishment that many in the West said was too harsh.
Their stunt - bursting into Moscow's main Russian Orthodox Cathedral to urge the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Putin - infuriated the church and many Russians. But Kremlin critics said their trial was part of a crackdown on dissent orchestrated by Putin, who began a six-year presidential term in May.
The two women lost their appeals on Oct. 10.
The women's lawyers said they had tried to argue that they should be allowed to remain in jail in Moscow, saying it would have permitted them to be closer to their small children. They had also cited health and safety concerns at far-flung penal colonies.
"They have been sent away," one of their lawyers, Mark Feigin, told Reuters, saying he did not know where the women had been dispatched. By law, relatives must be informed once a convict arrives at a prison, but the trip can take days.
One women's prison is about 100 km (60 miles) from Moscow, but most are much further away.
Former collaborators in a street-art group said on Twitter that Tolokonnikova had been sent to Mordovia, about 500 km (300 miles) east of Moscow, and Alyokhina to the Perm region, near the Ural Mountains about 1,100 km (700 miles) east of the capital. That was not confirmed.
The duo had been held in a Moscow detention centre since their arrests in March. Western governments and musicians like Madonna had said their sentences were disproportionate, but Putin voiced support for the sentences, saying the state must protect the feelings of the faithful.
The dominant Russian Orthodox Church has cast their protest as part of a concerted attack against the church and Russian traditions.
A third convicted member of Pussy Riot, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was released on appeal when a court suspended her sentence after her lawyer argued that she had been pulled away from the cathedral's altar before the protest song began.

Pick your poison with these people.  Mafia style corruption or hardline, old Soviet style control.  Its a little of both right now but eventually someone is going to take control and Putin is doing it.  I think people have chosen the "lesser of two evils" here.  Not that its right, but its better than assassins running the street with drugs and guns.

Vladimir Putin:  This just goes to show that "You can take the boy out of the KGB, but you can't take the KGB out of the boy."  While Russia (aka "The Former Soviet Union") has made many strides in human rights and such, the bottom line is that there are still many of the old "Soviets" who still run things underground.

The "Soviets" will be back again one day and the Cold War will warm up again.

This is just the modern version of how the communist party controls their people.  This is a case that is not important to most of the people in the west.  However, you can clearly see that:

1. There is no clear law of: Separation of Church and States(US).

2. Their version of Freedom of Speech is very Fuzzy - You have the right to speak your mind, but if the dictator and church don't like what they hear, they put you in jail.

The big guys are always watching over your shoulders - days and nights!

Imagine that - communist's stiffle free speech and throw u in prison? hmmm Never...
Isnt it funny how American idiots (democrat voters) follow the progressive (or obama) agenda fail to see what they are "progressing" towards?

Less liberty - oh yes I would love a new entitlement just tell me what to eat, what to say, what to drive, - sorry I am sounding like Tony Montana a politcal prisoner from Communist Cuba.  Isnt that ironic.

That darn Constitution - a charter of negative liberties telling you what the Government cant do "on your behalf"  - says OBAMA -
Liberty - Defintion: is the ability of individuals to have agency (control over their own actions haha  Oh yes, big government is looking out for you! -  I will take a few more entitlements please - also known as shackles of government slavery its just too bad idiots dont see past their own nose.

Before I pass judgment on either side, I would want to know the entire story.  I would want to know what their law was, what Pussy Riot actually did to break the law and inflame not only the church but, the government.  Not crazy about the way Russia handles their citizens but, anyone who would riot in a church in Russia has to know they aren't likely going to take it as a joke.

Pretty sure this is a slanted article.  They are disgusting and they weren't pleading to Virgin Mary, they were disrespecting the church and religion.  I have read about them misbehaving in raunchy ways other than this -- one apparently did something sexual with a chicken in a grocery store in front of children.  I am not saying I know what the appropraite punishment should be, but I think that what they are in trouble for is misrepresented here.

Ahhh yes.  The collapsing Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.  The new Russia is headed up by the former black marketeers, and this criminal Puketin is, and will not be the last of a long line of power-grubbing dictators.  How sad is it that the same country that helped rid the world of Nazis should continue along that very path of silencing all who are critical of the regime. Pussy Riot's protest was no Tiananmen, but the punishment of two years in Siberia proves that the New Russia is much like the Old Germany that makes all who are critical of the monster disappear.

They shouldn't worry because I would rescue those women while there in Ukraine soon after retrieving all personal belonging including credit cards. The women were exploitable their intention was a prank and to embarrass plus free publicity.

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
