Randy Newman, professional troublemaker

New online song is his most searing sarcasm yet

By Mark C. Brown Sep 18, 2012 10:37AM
Randy NewmanRandy Newman. Oscar-winning composer. Grammy-winning artist. But most of all, professional troublemaker.

Newman's biting sarcasm dates back to his earlier days with the song "Political Science." More recently he composed the pointed "A Few Words in Defense of Our Country."

Now he's at it again with a new song, "I'm Dreaming" ... of a white president.

He has released "I'm Dreaming" as both a video and a free download via his website. Share with your friends at your own risk. It's getting ugly out there.

Edit: I thought putting the word "sarcasm" in the headline would be a tip-off, but those of you calling Newman a "racist" are missing the point. He is making fun of racists, as a number of other comments have pointed out. You can disagree with his point of view, but he is not advocating racism. Exactly the opposite.

I read a lot of your posts in here and just shook my head and laughed at you people. You are pretending to be so dam innocent. Racism still exist, and the majority of you hate Obama because he is black. Don't pull that, I am not a racist crap on me. I have been around a lot of you for a long time. In school and in the workplace I have encountered racist remarks from you people. Guess what, I don't give a rats **** if you like me or not. I can go into a game room and I am called monkey, or the N word. Still hiding behind something, just like the coward KKK has done for years. You are hiding behind this computer. COWARDS, AND WILL ALWAYS BE COWARDS. Why not call me a N in my face instead of behind a computer? Let's start a new thing no more hiding, start telling people how you feel in person.  Make sure you call the paramedics ahead of time, we are not taken your **** anymore, my blood has already taken crap from your blood. IT"S OVER.

Hopefully some of you saw yourselves in his sarcasm and realize that it is actually true. Unite as citizens, and watch America flourish. It is the people who divided our government and brought our country to a point of collapse. It will take us to turn it around. Don't allow your personal feelings to destroy our country. Country first.

Hi to you also, mrck.....Since Mr. Newman supports President Obama, the song would not be very satirical if he wrote "I'm dreaming of a Black President."  It would be truth.  Here is an excerpt from a recent article from James McKinnley in the Politics and Government Blog of the Times...

The award-winning songwriter, who supports President Obama, has weighed in on the role of race in the presidential election, releasing on Tuesday poking fun at voters who long for the days when a white man was in the White House.

“I think there are a lot of people who find it jarring to have a black man in the White House and they want him out,” Mr. Newman said. “They just can’t believe that there’s not a more qualified white man. You won’t get anyone, and I do mean anyone, to admit it.”

Again with blaming one individual for all of Americas woes, sir we are all not idiots, it took more than four years to get where we are at, and more than one president, perhaps if all these so called politicians that complain about everything Obama tried to accomplish helped, instead of block, perhaps he would had been able to fufill his promises, never in the history of this country has a president been blatantly disrespected on national tv by his fellow politicians as this president, has. so please save your conversation, for someone stranded in the desert, that just returned home,  perhaps your words will rest easier with them.

Hey blue dartagnan, you can't handle the truth. The only truth you seem to know is the "Wing Nut" truth of talk radio. It used to be you needed a fact to build your distortions on, but now Right Wing Radio talk show hosts and Republicans on the House and Senate floor just lie. No truth at the bottom of their deep well, just lies. Why did you assume I don't listen to talk radio. I drive a car and since Right Wing talk radio dominates (I'm thinking to the tune of 99%) talk radio you can't avoid it. In my region, we have Neal Bortz, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Savage, Laura Ingraham back to back to back to back to back every day from 9am to 9pm. I know what they are saying and lies are the base of their arguments. It is extremely sad that these people feel they have to lie and distort instead of just presenting their case and letting it rise or fall on its merits. I guess they have no merits and they, obviously, know it. Sean Hannity is the worse. He asks people who disagree with him to have their facts ready if he lets them on the air and then when they do he cuts them off before they have a chance to present them saying "I don't have time for this." He is typical of all the Republican politians. They don't listen to anyone with a different view. They just vote against anything they don't present. SAD state of affairs. The Republicans, politicians and people alike, have pulled away from the rest of the county and live in their own, incestual country, only listening to people who agree with them. They never grow and expand their horizons. They figuratively, put their fingers in the ears and yell, na na na na. WELL ENOUGH of this rant for the time being

A president can only be as good or bad as his cooperation wiht Congress and the Senate allows. As

you must know ( unless you are clueless ), blatant raceism from the Tea Party and other like minded

Republicans thwarted his leadership. I have yet to see any signs of arrogance, except from the Romney Camp. I, and most foward, clear thinking, Americans, do want a president who cares about us.

Was Bush a good leader? He ( along with his cabal of Cheney, Rove and Rumsfeld ) led us to Iraq and Afganistan. Where will Romney lead us? Certanily not to his offshore stash of cash.

"Black people voted for Barack Obama because he is Black."

I can guarentee you that the person who says this has never talked to a Black person about it. Black people voted for Barack Obama for the same reason they voted for Bill Clinton. They did it because he clearly ran in their best interests. Allen Keyes as a GOP member ran for president two times and garnered very few Black votes. I as a Black-American would not vote for Allen Keyes if you offered me millions.

Randy Newman is telling you something...

What he is saying is that if you agree with this sarcasm, or if you are offended by its message, you are part of the problem. This is not 1940. People of color have the right and the duty to vote in their best interests no matter what color or sex the candidate is, just as White men have had the right to vote in their own self interests for decade upon decade upon decade.

The only difference is that White is becoming a minority.

We cannot be considered a progressive society with racism as the basis of our way of life. The racist is becoming a dinosaur - an angry, wealthy, powerful dinosaur. He must now understand that you can change a lot of things in this land but the Constitution will outlast you, and ultimately change this land into what it says it is. This land has changed from the begining and it will continue to change. You either change with it, or become the next guy PO'd because he couldn't stop it.

Thank you Randy for a wonderful piece of art and truth.

I don't care what they call him... I don't care that Sarcasm is his game..Because his job is satire doesn't mater to me.  Its out of place in any circumstance.
I feel the same way about making fun of someone else's religious leaders in the name of comedy. What is there to gain .. to him it is sarcasm to others it will be an Anthem.

To: hello-goodbye, Uhhuh of course and skyp0ckets - Wow,I'm sorry you all miss the point of my post...I am absolutely NOT promoting bigotry!  I work with people of all races to make my city a better place.  My friends and neighbors are Black, Hispanic and White - equally.

The point was that we tend NOT to screw over people of our own ethnic group, so you might expect Obama to take advantage of whites, but not necessarily of blacks.  Okay, fine...you think that sounds racist.  How bout the fact that he SCREWED OVER A CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTOR - let the MONEY do the talking then!  My point is that he USED people that were trying to or did HELP him and then tossed them out like garbage, regardless of race.  And of course he's not going to publicly disavow anyone - that's why you need to read the book (The Amateur)!  It EXPOSES his CHARACTER as a HUMAN BEING and as a president who is clearly unqualified to lead this country.

I am all for a non-white president - provided he is a QUALIFIED president.  But I am certainly not going to vote for someone based on their racial background.  And many blacks in this country DID exactly that!  They voted for Obama simply because he was black and they identified with him, NOT because they had any idea what his values, beliefs or qualifications were.  And whites have done the same thing in the past - not voting for someone because of their racial background, religion, gay, etc.  This is just the first time this country has had a president of ANY color other than white.

Barack Obama is simply THE WRONG MAN - black, white or otherwise - for the job.  That's not being a bigot, that's being truthful.

The only way President Obama is gonna lose this race is if people allow the new voter registration rules in some states to deter them from voting. We have to get OUT THE VOTE IN FULL FORCE!!!

There is no doubt that Newman is being sarcastic in this piece, just as he was in "Short People".  It's really neither that clever nor that good.  But all that aside what I would like to know is why is the president considered Black.  He is half white (50% white and 50% black) why isn't he considered White?  In fact, if the objective is to get along and have government function for the good of the people why aren't we all, left and right, ephasizing that he is a blend of the two races instead of constantly playing the race card.

Great Song Randy! As usual. LOVE your sarcastic humor!

Black, White, Green or Yellow. Just as long as they are NOT:

1  Democrat
2  Republican
3  A Lawyer
4  Already in office

We need to wipe the slate clean and go at it again from a different approach. Starting with the constitution.  Our children should worry about their world, Not the bills we leave them.  This whole mess started long before Bush, OR Obama...IMO....From the Kennedy Assassination forward is where we screwed it up
  LBJ , Nixon, Ford, etc....

I agree with the straight Democratic vote.  We need to get things done now and it's not going to happen with the TEAbaggers and obstructionist Repugs in the government that they don't believe in anyway.  We got so much more accomplished with Pelosi's Dem run House, and we need that back to get the jobs bill passed and rebuilding of this country.  Also for the life of me I can't figure out why some people vote for one party for the White House and another party for Congress... then complain that nothing is getting done.  They sort of set it up that way when they voted for a divided government. Idiots!

If I hated a race, I might campaign to flood all of their countries with millions of people that are not their race, and tell everyone to "assimilate", until no people of that kind were left. If anyone objected, I would scream "raaaciss"! at them and get them fired from their jobs.
If I hated a certain race, I might do that. But I am not doing that. Anti-whites are doing it to White people in all White countries and only White countries.
Anti-racist is a code word for anti-White.

President Obama has destroyed the absurb idea of white supremacy and a great deal of people who think that being "white" makes them better than other people who are not "white," are becoming uncomfortable.  They say they want their country back.  That's so funny because quiet as it's kept, all "white" people are not really accepted by the "whites" who are really in control who don't really like poor whites, middle-class, upper-middle class, working class "whites."  This also includes "whites" of Eastern Europeans (Italians, Greeks, etc.). We (conscious people) know that whites don't really get along and that they are really in the minority all over the world.  Non-whites make up the majority of the world.  The bottom line--white is not necessarily a real description.  It's a trick and Obama has proven it.  Get over it because we are not fooled by your illusions and attempt to justify your insecurities.

LOL, Stephen-Though I always appreciate a well-articulated argument, I still think it is dumb to actually respond without really thinking about it first...I am not of the mindset of actually believing that the white ideal is actually ideal, so I don't believe that I am actually wrongly thinking in the way I was taught. You are right...to subscribe to that ideal WOULD MAKE ME AND ANYONE ELSE AN IDIOT! However, that is NOT the case. I get the irony/sattire of Randy's song, but it would be no place for it if race wasn't part of the political equation. You are sincerely naive, my friend, if you don't think it IS us against them-no matter if the "us" against "them" is white & black, rich & poor, republican & democrat, wall street & main street, etc. OF COURSE, "green" is the color that this is all about, but has the color of one's skin not been used as a pawn in the money/power game since the inception of this country? We are all aware that if you took the combined wealth of the US and redistributed it, we'd ALL be sitting pretty. However, money = power & power is the gateway to more money, so that will NEVER happen. Really, why else would any candidate spend millions of dollars for a job that pays ~$400,000/yr (president) or ~$200,000 (congress, etc)?? I think NOT rightly dividing the truth is what makes it easier "for those in power to pull your strings." LET'S TELL THE TRUTH-race IS an issue in this country...just read the posts here, NOT JUST MINE! You are really proving my point when you say It's "divide and conquer!" We, as blacks, have historically been divided in so many ways that we ARE easily conquered. It doesn't have to be that way, thus, my point--being Pro-black doesn't have to mean anti-white. This is NOT justified racism, it's one answer to combatting the problems we have in the black community. Who do YOU think (in terms of race not social class) is going to be "picked off" in this economic warfare, ESPECIALLY if Romney gets in office now or his republican counterparts in the future?
