Randy Newman, professional troublemaker
New online song is his most searing sarcasm yet
Randy Newman. Oscar-winning composer. Grammy-winning artist. But most of all, professional troublemaker.Newman's biting sarcasm dates back to his earlier days with the song "Political Science." More recently he composed the pointed "A Few Words in Defense of Our Country."
Now he's at it again with a new song, "I'm Dreaming" ... of a white president.
He has released "I'm Dreaming" as both a video and a free download via his website. Share with your friends at your own risk. It's getting ugly out there.
Edit: I thought putting the word "sarcasm" in the headline would be a tip-off, but those of you calling Newman a "racist" are missing the point. He is making fun of racists, as a number of other comments have pointed out. You can disagree with his point of view, but he is not advocating racism. Exactly the opposite.
Those of you who are aghast at this should remember that Randy not only wrote the Redneck song referenced earlier, but "Short People (got no reason to live)", as well as many other songe meant as a commentary on American values and views (see "Let's Burn Down the Cornfield", etc.). The man is a musical genius (like Dylan, writes 'em but not always the best at delivering them) who writes social commentary into his art.
This is funny, sad, pointed, and timely.
In a few years, most of you all will have forgotten about this song. There's no reason to bash other races or political parties over a song, because this song, Randy Newman's opinion (or lack thereof), and the color of our president's skin is insignificant. What is significant is that in November, everyone who is able to vote casts their ballot. Vote for the president who is going to do the best job.
