Randy Newman, professional troublemaker

New online song is his most searing sarcasm yet

By Mark C. Brown Sep 18, 2012 10:37AM
Randy NewmanRandy Newman. Oscar-winning composer. Grammy-winning artist. But most of all, professional troublemaker.

Newman's biting sarcasm dates back to his earlier days with the song "Political Science." More recently he composed the pointed "A Few Words in Defense of Our Country."

Now he's at it again with a new song, "I'm Dreaming" ... of a white president.

He has released "I'm Dreaming" as both a video and a free download via his website. Share with your friends at your own risk. It's getting ugly out there.

Edit: I thought putting the word "sarcasm" in the headline would be a tip-off, but those of you calling Newman a "racist" are missing the point. He is making fun of racists, as a number of other comments have pointed out. You can disagree with his point of view, but he is not advocating racism. Exactly the opposite.

Right on, Randy!  Go to the comments section of any political article ' Osambo' 'Obammy"

Remeber the gop southern strategy?  Reagan launching his campaign at the site of a MISS lynching?

Not all radical righties are racists, but enough of them are.

Like Bill Maher noted : Bush/Cheney-deficiets don't matter.  All of a sudden deficeits do matter and it's Obama's fault.  Oh yea, Bush is a white guy, his credit is good, but the Black guy has to pay cash.

Who says this Obama "spook" is doing anything for the country except bankrupting it and turning it into an institutionalized welfare state.  Please be aware that this is artistic license and irony inspired by Newman's piece so don't get upset.

For those pulling out the race card you should look up " African Americans for Obama" on you tube. If that isn't racist I don't know what is... And that video was up quite awhile ago. Could you imagine a white president doing a "calling all honkeys" video? He would be put out to pasture by now!

Amen, as an educated black man, I saw the humor, wit and sarcasm in Mr. Newman's song.  Only the fools who look for inuendo and conspiracies can't see the forest for the trees.

Uh, hello...he's a total Obama supporter, he asks listeners on the website to donate to the United Negro College Fund, and YES it is satire intended to provoke thought.

At 1st I thought he was being a total racist ****. Seeing the title floored me and I had to listen being a black man. After I actually listened to the song and the lyrics he is actually stating that some white presidents in the past f*^k things up and made really bad decisions.

He is being extremely sarcastic does anyone see it the same way,

Its funny how alot of Republicans and Redneck Racist people love to show there true colors and talk all that crazy talk about black people and President Obama on here but in the real world most of them stay low key and play like they like blacks and the President! I laugh at you people because we have a great president in a great country and we DEMOCRATS will WIN the election and its nothing you negative loud mouth Republicans/Fox News can do about it!

Wow, I am speechless. Pretty tasteless. Can't believe this is the same man who wrote, "You've Got A Friend In Me," for Toy Story.

did anyone even listen to the words. I think he was making fun of white presidents and making more the point that a lot of great people are overlooked because of color. Good grief people get a clue before you fly off the handle. I am not an Obama fan but it sure as heck isn't because he is black. I don't like his policies. I really don't think any of the politicians today are on the side of the people.

The dream of a 'white President" is but a dream deferred.

Rather pathetic, all things considered.  I would have hope that blatant racism would be over by now.

Hope our President prevails in November and the party of NO! gets the boot from Congress, as well.
