R.I.P. Davy Jones

Seven lesser-known Monkees classics sung by Davy

There is a LOT to say about the sad passing of Davy Jones (including that he preferred to be called David all along), and much of it will be said before the day is over. BUT: He died of a heart attack today at the still tender age of 66. He was cast as the cute member of the fictitious TV band The Monkees, which was on NBC for two seasons (1966-68). The "band" became a band and were still performing live as recently as last summer. Within the group, Jones was the old school song and dance man—his roots were on the stage (he performed on Broadway as the Artful Dodger in Oliver! long before his Monkees break, and even appeared in that role on the same Ed Sullivan show on which The Beatles made their famous debut).

Anyway, it's sad, obviously. Everyone's going to throw up clips of "Daydream Believer" and the TV theme song. And they're fine. But I go deep with the Monkees, so here are 7 lesser-known songs that feature Mr. Jones as lead singer (and in the some cases, dancer).

Rest in peace.

Thank you Davy. Micky Nesmith said it all the best. Davy helped me through a troubled time in my younger years when I didn't know what to do. It saddens my heart to know that I will never see or hear Davy again. I am 10 years younger than Davy and I feel so connected to him. As others have stated, you will always be Davy to us. My heart and prayers go to the family members and all of the Monkeys.

My childhood best friend Donna and I spent two full summers from ages 12-14 yrs. reading Tiger Beat and putting up many pics from the MONKEES. I am so sad that Davey Jones is gone. He will always connect me to my favorite pre teen days when it was fun and innocent. You'll always be Davey to us.

Thank you so very much for sharing these beautiful memories!  Gonna miss Mr Jones.  My kids and grandkids and I still do the "Monkees Walk" singing" Hey Hey We're The Monkees."  They gave my generation alot of great memories...They did the first Music videos MTV....and we loved them!  My heart goes out to his family.

Thanks for posting these wonderful memories. "Look Out" was always one of my favorite songs. When I go home I will pull out my old Monkee records and smile at the warm memories the Monkees and Davy Jones have given to me. They really were the first made-for-TV band.

I agree completely. I was a big fan of his in those days, and I had forgotten some of these songs, and they were wonderful. I finally had the opportunity to see him in concert in 2009 with David Cassidy, and I am so thankful I did. He was so much more than "just" a Monkee. I loved him as only a little girl can, and even when I went to the concert, that deep infatuation was still there. A large part of my childhood has passed away today, along with the charming and talented man named David. It is such a shame that his life ended before he was able to reap the benefits of being an older man with his daughters, horses and music around him to enjoy. I hope he knew how much so many people really loved him, and how much he will be missed. That smile will remain with me always. Rest peacefully David. Thank you for all that you gave us.
