R.I.P. Levon Helm

Two days after cancer announcement, a legend succumbs

That was too quick. Levon Helm's family just announced that he was near the end of his life, and now he's gone.

It was too young for such a legend to go, but I try to focus on the bright side. Helm lived life on his own musical terms and did what he loved until he couldn't anymore. Check the photo above -- that's Levon playing with Joe Walsh in New Jersey late last year, and you can see from the look on his face he's having a blast. That's the Levon Helm I want to remember.

His surviving partner from The Band, Robbie Robertson, visited him over the weekend and posted this lovely Facebook tribute:

Last week I was shocked and so saddened to hear that my old band mate, Levon, was in the final stages of his battle with cancer. It hit me really hard because I thought he had beaten throat cancer and had no idea that he was this ill. I spoke with his family and made arrangements to go and see him.

On Sunday I went to New York and visited him in the hospital. I sat with Levon for a good while, and thought of the incredible and beautiful times we had together. It was heartwarming to be greeted by his lovely daughter Amy, whom I have known since she was born. Amy’s mother, Libby Titus, and her husband, Donald Fagen, were so kind to help walk me through this terrible time of sadness. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife Sandy.

Levon is one of the most extraordinary talented people I’ve ever known and very much like an older brother to me. I am so grateful I got to see him one last time and will miss him and love him forever.

The World will miss this legend, but he did it his way, and that I am happy for him. I've enjoyed Mr Helms music since his days with Dylan, and to this day, The Last Waltz is one of my favorite movies. So, Mr Helm, rest now and forever. R.I.PNoteNoteNote

Saw The Band at the Cayalyst in Santa Cruz around 86.  A truly special intimate moment, in retrospect one of the finest shows that I have seen.   I'd like to recommend a video "The Band" "Authorized Video Biography" told mostly from Levon's perspective.  Lot's of great interviews with other "legends" and actually kind of a history of American Rock n' Roll".  Thank you Levon, for bringing so much happiness into the world of Rock n' Roll.  Jay Dub

The song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" from their album The Last Waltz is IMHO the best song with Levon Helm singing.

I wish to say to the family, that Levon has been part of my life, at a distance so to say, because I have listened to him and all of THE BAND for many years. I'm sorry for your loss and wish you all of my deepest sympathy. I have had people come to me and ask if I was Robbie Robertson of the band, and I would say to them that I couldn't hold a candle to them, they are and will always in my mind be THE BAND. May the good Lord receive him in his arms and bring him peace.   With Love Robbie Robertson, not of THE BAND.

A true legend of Rock Music.  His vocals on "The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down" were haunting.  I seen the band in their farewell tour No. 1 and when the concert was done you knew you had been a witness of greatness and something very very special.  RIP Levon

I hope that people see this today and go listen to The Bands music and Levons new music. His voice was one of music's greatest, what a great gift from God, am glad that I got to be a little part of it.

I just heard this.   No one can say enough about him--he was so talented.  He sang from his heart and soul.  I had just listened to some of his work with his daughter and thought how amazing that he just seemed to get better and better.  Dick Clark and now Levon--I miss those early days when we thought it would go on forever.  I am glad that he and Robbie talked.  It always made me sad that they parted on bad terms.

From Big Pink to Electric Dirt, he touched my soul and helped teach me to follow the influences of popular music and listen to the Blues, Gospel, Country and Soul.  Hats off to Robbie for reaching out to his friend and God speed to Levon!

I loved listening to the "Band" and to Levon. He was the heart of it. Sad to hear. I have them on my cd player in my car right now.
