Record Store Day is the New Festivals

Huge slew of exclusive releases from ABBA to Ozzy

Seems everyone—from Ryan Adams to Paul Revere and the Raiders, from Afrika Bambaata to Pussy Galore, from Katy Perry to Captain Beefheart, from ABBA to Ozzy—is climbing aboard the good ship Record Store Day, offering a massive trove of exclusive releases, early availabilities, reissues, and limited run offerings to independent record stores in an effort to get people to actually close their computers and go to an actual record store and actually buy actual records. If this concept is unfamiliar, please ask your parents (or grandparents), as it really is a good time. Another way to learn about it is to patronize your local indie record shop on April 21.

Perhaps the most ambitious Record Store Day release (unsurprisingly) is from the Flaming Lips, detailed here, via Pitchfork:
The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends and features collaborations with Bon Iver, Erykah Badu, Nick Cave, Yoko Ono, Neon Indian, Ke$ha, Prefuse 73, Tame Impala, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Lightning Bolt, Biz Markie, New Fumes, Chris Martin of Coldplay, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. It's out on Record Store Day, April 21.
The recordings document "a series of unique and experimental sessions," according to a press release, and will be released in a very limited edition and never pressed again. The album comes as a 2xLP on multicolored vinyl, each disc with a unique design. A number of the tracks included have been culled from the Lips' previous collaborations with Neon Indian, Lightning Bolt, Prefuse 73, and Yoko Ono.
