'Young and the Restless' head writer shakeup?
Eric Braeden speaks out on Josh Griffith's exit as Katherine's goodbye story begins
The CBS soap opera is sticking with a firm "No comment," but when a fan asked Eric Braeden (Victor) via twitter about Griffith's unconfirmed "The Young and the Restless" exit, the outspoken actor responded, "Let me just say, I'm very pissed off!!! Enough said!!!"
Buzz has it that the head writer left abruptly after a tense week of intriguing Facebook posts about "finding [his] bliss" and looking for "spiritual growth." Those posts have been deleted, but Highlight Hollywood reports Griffith sent a message to his writing staff about leaving the show due to creative differences Thursday. The site also indicates he was actually pushed out of his position and quotes nameless insiders who say executive producer Jill Farren Phelps still has a target on her back.
Rumblings also suggest current "The Young and the Restless" staffer and soap vet Shelly Altman ("Another World," "General Hospital," "One Life to Live.") will step up as head writer. Her co-head writer could be "General Hospital" scribe Jean Passanante or Tracy Thompson, another staffer from the "The Young and the Restless" writing room.
Griffith, who served as head writer during the infamous writers' strike, was called back to the table in 2012 when Phelps took over. In the wake of former showrunner Maria Arena Bell's exit and "The Young and the Restless" 40th anniversary, fans cheered the show's changes in course. As this summer has heated up, however, so have the fans. Many are not pleased with the way story has been going, of late.
With the story arc that tackles the death of matriarch Katherine Chancellor kicking off Friday, a few show insiders recently told MSN TV that the upcoming months are "classic Bell," meaning they reflect the vibe and style of the show back when it was being run by creators William Bell and his wife Lee Phillip Bell. Only time will tell if that's true, but a push to change the vibe and direction of the show could easily have led to this alleged behind the scenes shakeup.
As previously reported, the show is honoring the memory of late matriarch Jeanne Cooper with the passing of her beloved character, Katherine Chancellor. A series of episodes started Friday, Aug. 16, when Katherine's loved ones began receiving sent postcards asking them to gather at the Chancellor Estate, where they will learntheir dear friend and family member passed away while on vacation with her husband, Murphy (Michael Fairman).
"In the coming weeks, Katherine's memory will be honored in several very special ways that allow us to pay tribute to Jeanne in the remarkable manner she deserves," Phelps said. "It is an extraordinary story that will bring the residents of Genoa City together to remember this woman they all loved."
Stay tuned to see how this soaptastic "The Young and the Restless" drama plays out on both sides of the camera.
"The Young and the Restless" airs weekdays on CBS.
I too have been a loyal viewer of the show for years. While I’m unhappy that some of my favorites have left and that some of the veterans on the show don’t have much of a storyline these days, I still think the show is pretty interesting.
Fans say they are bored. That’s because they want this guy with that woman and that guy with this woman and they want them to live happily ever after. Now that really would be boring. They kind of need these weird storylines to keep the show going. Don’t forget people, they are writing scripts for five days a week and have been doing it for years. There is only so much that they can come up with without repeating some stories over again. I’m sure that some of the actors don’t care what their storyline is as long as they have one. They probably like the challenge of a plot where they really get to show their acting ability.
I love Doug Davidson and I’m happy that he won an Emmy. While he currently doesn’t have a big storyline, he did have one last year with the Ricky story. A fantastic performance by him. Love the Michael and Kevin stories. Where’s Laura Lee Bell, as the new DA?
I can’t speak to the performance of Jill Farren Phelps because I don’t know anything about the production of a show. I just know that I’m still watching.
Love Y&R and hope it goes on for many more years.
No I am not a racist. Its just that these people in charge of the Young and the Restless are ruining this show. this is just the most stupid story line ever........let me list all the people they have on this show that flat out can't act. Starting with the one playing Avery; the one playing Kyle. (the worse) the one playing Fenmore (Oh my God who told this kid he could act?) .the new Abby is horrid. I have watched this show from the very first show and these new people that have taken over this show are just aweful....... At first I didn't like this Summer but she is growing into her part . This Rose and Neil story line is nothing.........You stop and think of the people that have left this show since these new people have taken over. Ashley, Abby, now Phyllis........what does that tell you. Even the Lilly and Cane story line is stupid.....Why don't you find a decent man for Jill so that poor women has a life. Stop all the stupid ghost stories already. Enough said.............its pitiful what is happening.to our favorite show.
I've been watching Y&R since the beginning. WTF? You have turned Sharon into an idiot. I hope you don't kill Phyllis off...she is one of the only interesting characters. Dump the Rose story, nobody cares. Every time Billy is going to be bad you slick back his hair and grow the shadow beard, then when he is going to be good you clean him up, duh.
Avery has the personality of a fence post. The old Lily would never have been so interested in another man.
Oh, and Lauren and Michael's son.....please, what a dork, give him a kick in the butt and a haircut.
Why have you reduced Victor to demanding that Summer not connect with Jack, even if Jack isn't really her dad, Victor thinks he is and it is ridiculous even for Victor. Give him something better to do business wise.
Adam is a true son of Victor, good character. The bar that Nick owns is kind of lame.....he needs to be more involved back in the Newman business. You have made him non interesting as well.
I love Y&R even though it has become tedious....please,please, writers, get on the stick.
At one time I loved this show lately not so much. Storylines are sooooooo stupid. One day you have a 5 year old child the next day she is 16 but looks on 20. That kid of Michael and Lauren is so obnoxious I can hardly bear to watch him plus get your hair out of your eyes. Kyle is vapid. Summer is always crying. Lets get some adult stories going here, get rid of these kids.
I'm sick of Sharon's character. Been watching the show for years. The show needs spruced up.
