Charlie Sheen to Judge 'American Idol'? Seriously?

Wait, it's not April 1 again. And yet, TMZ is treating like a real scoop an obvious put-on from "American Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe. He told the gossip site that he would "LOVE" for recent crazy town returnee Charlie Sheen to judge Season 12 -- alongside elderly comic legend Jerry Lewis -- should current judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson leave two or more vacancies.

"Nigel would not say if he was joking," TMZ reported, "but he repeated his wish list several times during the conversation."

Really, guys?

TMZ even elicited a response from Sheen to the "offer": "If the numbers move the needle AND 'Idol' matches 20 percent of my weekly salary for Autism Speaks, JDRF, and the Boys and Girls Club ... then the hell with it." (Translation: Sure, if they pay me enough and support my charities.)

Sheen also said that FX -- which airs his new sitcom, "Anger Management" -- would have to approve. If so, Sheen concluded: "As we say, pour the smoke." (Actually, only YOU say that, Charlie.)

Where to even begin on this one? First of all, why would a music show aimed at teenagers hire one guy known primarily to their parents and another to their grandparents -- neither of whom possesses the slightest relation to the music business?

The real answer is that they wouldn't, and that Lythgoe probably just wanted to generate some controversial headlines for himself. While appearing yesterday on "Showbiz Tonight," he repeated his wacky wish list, but admitted, "I’m not sure how far I’ll get with that, but I think that would be fun!"

Lythgoe has yet to even reach an agreement to oversee Season 12 , so the casting decision may not be his. And if he still even has a shot at keeping his job at this point, we wonder whether making crazy statements to the media is the smartest way to avoid being fired. (The next time they speak, Lythgoe should ask Sheen about that.)

"American Idol" returns next winter on FOX.

no more of a joke than lambert......i don't remember Ellen D's recording career, besides what's the difference? Tyler liked everyone, Lopez stood up when the other two did....the show is already a joke.........i like the idea of Sheen...I can see by your post why your name is tootiekins......

This has to be a joke!!  I am a fan of Idol.... but if they bring in Charlie Sheen, I will no longer waste my time watching.... How can he judge talent, when he is the biggest no talent fool out there?? Furthermore, WTF is Ford thinking..... they are a major sponsor of that show... Who would want to be associated with Charlie Sheen? Come on, you're killin me here.

Wow, that would be funny and interesting!  LOL!  Charlie Sheen would probably get all the attention if this is true!  Tooo funny!  So, the title should be called Three Men and American Idol!

Then again, better him than Miley Cyrus. LOL!

I WOULD BE GREATLY DISSAPOINTED IF THE LAST SEASON JUDGES DID NOT RETURN. i HAVE WATCHED SINCE THE VERY BEGINNING AND NEVER MISSED, BUT THIS PAST SEASON WAS THE ABSOLUTE BEST WITH RESPECTS TO THE JUDGES. I BELIEVE THAT J-LO, STEVEN TYLER & RANDI JACKSON WERE VERY PROFESSIONAL AND DID NOT BICKER CONSTANTLY LIKE SIMON COWEL DID.  I CAN GET BICKERING ANYWHERE ELSE, I DO NOT WANT IT IN MY ENTERTAINMENT.  THEY GOT THERE POINTS ACROSS WITHOUT THE DRAMA AND I REALLY LOVE ALL THREE.  I HOPE THEY RETURN NEXT SEASON.

Why do we continue to reward this idiot's bad behavior by even talking about him .. there is nothing funny about the embarassment he continues to cause his children .. when they are old enough to realize what a terrible example he has set ..It's going to be so Sad ..  FOX, you can't be so desperate for ratings that you would hire Charlie Sheen as an American Idol Judge .. Please hire someone that knows music and is a positive example ..  Consider Your  Audience .. Fox,  there are a lot of young people watching !!

wouldn't be that controversial considering JLo may be the worst judge in reality tv history and Tyler may be the biggest joke to every grace a judging podium. At least Sheen wouldn't fawn over the contestants, play favorites

Heck - it wouldn't be that controversial considering JLo may be the worst judge in reality tv history and Tyler may be the biggest joke to every grace a judging podium.  At least Sheen wouldn't fawn over the contestants, play favorites, and use every conceivable minute to market or make an **** out of himself.  Or at least he wouldn't do those things more frequently than the current panel.  ;-)
