One day after revealing her style makeover, Erika Van Pelt gets the hook

Billy Joel week was certainly the most underwhelming theme week thus far on "American Idol" Season 11! Granted, there were a few standout performances (and a few stood out for the wrong reasons), but most of the contestants seemed to fall right in the middle of the pack. And the middle isn't the best place to be, because it means you weren't memorable.

A few things to look forward to: a performance from Season 10's Haley Reinhart and a performance from Lana Del Rey. Both are sure to be entertaining in their own right. Haley is showing the contestants what can happen for them, even if they don't win -- as long as they agree to play by the rules. Lana Del Rey will show the contestants what happens when singing meets laboratory science.

My big questions are about Elise and Erika. Will Erika's haircut make her finally stand out?  Or did Tommy Hilfiger just make her look like (as one of you pointed out) a banker? Will Elise be in the bottom three again or is America warming to her? I thought she was fantastic in a week that clearly belonged to people who know who they want to be as artists. That's gotta count for something, right? But she and Phillip Phillips, I suspect, don't really need this competition. They don't seem like "American Idol" winning material, you know? They can make it without winning. I could easily see it coming down to Jessica Sanchez and Colton Dixon in the final two. But we still have a long way to go, and this night's hour of programming takes us one step closer.

Yes! The group number is back! They're singing "For the Longest Time," which I'm sure will be absolute crap. I live for it. Elise, bless her heart, is making an effort to smile and flirt a little more. She is playing Nigel's reindeer games. I enjoyed Skylar Laine singing to Casey Abrams in the audience but was distracted by the fellow directly in front of them. His stiff snapping was as awkward as the group number itself.

keepsnapping.jpg

Keep snapping, Jeremy. Snap like nobody's watching.

The individual performances are good vocally, but the interaction between all of them is tired and disconnected. It ranks a solid C. I would love to hear Jimmy Iovine's thoughts.

Next in Thursday night's buffet of awkward: It's the Ford music video! The kids are playing hide-and-seek in the mansion we all know they're not staying in this season. Ah ha! They were hiding in a Ford Eclipse! Those jokesters. I think we found Erika's old hair, too.

Ryan tells us there's only room for nine in the "Idol" mansion. Will Hollie, Skylar and Elise secure beds in it? Canopy beds, probably. Jimmy says this was Hollie's worst night in the competition so far, but he thinks she'll stay. Jimmy says Skylar is consistent but this wasn't her best performance. She may be stalling out, and it's too soon for that. Jimmy was concerned about "Vienna" as a song choice, but he says Elise is transformed. He got "goosies -- whatever goosies are!" So crusty, that Jimmy Iovine.

Hollie is moving into the mansion, as is Skylar. Ryan brings Elise forward to reveal that, for the first time, she is not in the bottom 3! They are all safe. Yay!

Lana Del Rey performs next, singing "Video Games." I guess you could call it singing. It's more of a whispery moan? I wish she would fake us out like Heejun did this week and just break into a performance of "You Make My Dreams" by Hall and Oates. Instead, she made the last part sound like she was underwater somehow.

LDRwhatever.jpg
"I guess I'm performing on a stage now. It's whatever."

Evidently, it's Steven Tyler's birthday this weekend, so Ryan brought out the Top 10 to sing "Happy Birthday" to Joe Perry's electric guitar playing. Steven and Joe Perry hugged, and their scarf tails intertwined in an unspeakable bond.

Deandre, Joshua and Jessica get their results next, and Jimmy says Deandre was "jumping around too much." Joshua didn't score very well in Jimmy's book this week, and he, too, will have to grow to win this thing. Jimmy gives Jessica "A's across the board" but seemed a bit bored by the whole process. Ryan tells Jessica that Billy Joel himself said he enjoyed her rendition. And so did America. Jessica is safe. Joshua is safe, and Deandre is in the bottom 3. Good job, voters. I approve.

Next, Haley Reinhart performs "Free," her "hot, new" single. You can get it on iTunes, but not for free. She starts out in a giant cage. Whoever is caging all these young singers (Haley, Miley Cyrus, etc.) just needs to stop. It's sick and wrong, and the bars aren't close enough together to keep them in there.

FreeHaley.jpg
Haley knows why the caged bird sings.

The cage lifts, and Haley escapes by walking forward. She did a good job. I liked parts of the song, and I really liked her dress and wind machine. That Angelina Jolie-at-the-Oscars, high-leg slit is in this season, then?

Erika, Heejun, Phillip and Colton are next to the stage for results. It will undoubtedly be Erika and Heejun in the bottom, right? Phillip and Colton were great. Billy Joel emailed Jimmy Iovine to say that Colton did a great job, and Jimmy agrees. I'm pleased to hear that Jimmy still checks his Netscape Navigator every once in a while -- when he's not promoting data phones he has no idea how to use. Just joshing you, Jimmy. Jimmy Iovine thinks Phillip should take Tommy Hilfiger's styling advice but said nothing about the performance. Jimmy loved Erika's decision to cut her hair and thinks Erika will be at the top of the batch. Jimmy agreed with Steven that Heejun "disrespected the entire process" and called the performance a D. Ouch! We love you, Heejun. And we love that you are disrespecting this preposterous process. That one's for Jermaine Jones!

Colton is safe. Erika is in the bottom 3, and ran back to Elise to get some maracas ("I'm bringing the party with me!"). Phillip is safe, and Heejun is in the bottom 3. This is not a surprising bottom 3. "Anyone who goes home tonight is a loss," Jennifer says -- a telling sign that they won't use the save tonight.

Ryan reveals that Deandre is safe, so I was wrong. Heejun is safe, and Erika is probably going home. And not home to the mansion. Well, good. I want more of Heejun's antics to keep things interesting. The judges aren't even talking. Randy is just shaking his head, and Steven is enjoying one last Erika performance. Heejun and Deandre are shown crying as Erika performs the crap out of "I Believe in You and Me." Poor Erika. She's just way too good, consistent and professional for this competition. They couldn't have given her one of the pimp spots ever? She always got the raw end of the deal.

The judges reveal that, no, they will not be using the save. Erika is going home with a new haircut. Thanks a lot, Tommy Hilfiger.

What did you think of Thursday night's results? Did America get it right?

"American Idol" airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.

A_NUMBR_1, The Voice certainly has some things to recommend it.  An end to the decade of terrible auditions we've seen on AI(and a season of the X Factor) as everyone is pre-screened, a very cool opening audition, a voting system that at least has Some bearing on how many records someone can sell, and an end to stilly age requirements.  I just wish it would go somewhere good after a really cool start, but I'm definitely keeping my ear on it.

Sorry AI, you lost me to THE VOICE!!!!!!! Much better talent and entertainment!!

These kids are all very good, even Heejun has entertainment value, Lee Dewise won which only goes to show how shallow the voters really are, they don't buy the albums after they select there idol, Lee has only sold a couple of hundred thousand albums , yet Lee received almost 50 million votes.

It is for instant entertainment value , live in the moment .

Also it occurs to be that having such an obviously flawed system and having the existence of sites like VFTW could enable them to fix it without fear of being suspect.  They could basically choose whoever they want to be eliminated and stir up whatever controversy they wanted, but what can you expect, it's those teenyboppers again or it's VFTW.  Kind of gives them the ultimate cover?

Good2Bbad, I have mixed feelings about this.  On one hand it seems silly to fix something when they make no effort to hide how bad the system is.  On the other, it is and will always be all about money and ratings.  Stirring up controversy can certainly be a way to get ratings(though at some point I think that can backfire on them)  The way to go may to watch this only for entertainment value without caring who wins(if that).  I already find myself fast forwarding through most of the results shows only stopping to watch the occasional good act and find out the ultimate result.

I'm not sure this show was ever about real talent, but it seems to be slipping farther away from that.  If I was voting, once James was out I suppose I would have voted for scotty.  Really he was maybe the 4th best of the season but the best that was left.

Ultimately, I have to say fix or flawed, who cares?  Ultimately either way if they shoot themselves in the foot enough and lose enough viewers maybe they'll fix the system and/or have some real results.

Another year of Idol  crying over the voting system, Flash news Idol loves it means your still watching, its only entertainment like any other soap opera.

Its all about numbers, each week there are more and more votes , starts out around 32 million then sky rockets at the end to over 90 million votes,  most which come from about a dozen girls in Jersey, lol.   If last year is any sign of who will make to the end by lack of talent , then Heejun and Deandre and Skylar will be in the final 3, based on there level of talent,  if Scotty and Alaina can be in the top 2 then  Heejun and Deandre are this years top 2SmileCrying

answear to slim K why we think the show is fixed,   you only have to look to last years finalists, anybody voting for talent sure didnt vote for Scotty, nuf said.

This is no longer about real talent ,  if it was you would have qualified judges doing the voting.

The Judges held there save in case of another Pia disaster, if next week for instance Jessica were in the bottom two with Heejun and  Jessica was on the chopping block to leave  I think the judges would step in and save her .

Next week Heejun, Deandre,Phillip  my pick for the bottom 3

The Real Slim K, I think Ryan Seacrest is underrated because he doesn't make the show about him and isn't abrasive with the contestants or judges.  He's a solid professional doing a job that can go unnoticed by most.  I think I gained a new respect for him during the x-factor when they constantly set their host up to fail and he never failed..  to disappoint.

The show may be fixed, but it really doesn't have to be.  The voting system is flawed.  50 votes online AND unlimited toll free votes AND unlimited text "I'm going to repeat that because it bears repeating" 50 votes online AND unlimited toll free votes AND unlimited texts.  The winner has always been meaningless, but at least you could figure on the best finishing runner-up or at least 4th.  Doesn't seem all that likely these days.  I've seen a lot of comments that call for the voting to be done like Dancing with the Stars or for the judges to choose among the bottom 3.  I hope it doesn't come to that, but if a child can't handle a toy you take it away.  My fears increase that the voting teanyboppers are going to choke on DeAndre's hair or slip on Heejun's banana peel.  But before they make such a move I hope they just go with a more reasonable system,  How about one vote per voting method(the only downside to that is they couldn't brag about so many votes coming in.  I guess they have their priorities and clearly votes is more important than accuracy).  This isn't rocket surgery.   Doing a little research, I found that the Vote for the Worst candidate is Heejun Han.  That may or may not explain a bit.

I like all 3 singing shows.  I wonder how underrated Ryan is.  If he leaves, it would be cataclysmic, I think, maybe kill the show.  Let's put it this way, I like the judges just fine but Ryan is less replaceable.  I also like Simon.  My almost 7 year-old tells me he likes 'The Voice' 3rd, my 40-something year-old brother says he only watched 'Idol' of these, and he ditched last year after Pia went home.

I get disappointed in the voting sometimes, but I just can't get into the Voice. I have watched it many times, and many of the singers are good, but I still prefer Idol with all of its faults.

Think it was a little ironic that Randy said Erica had one of the best voices on the show, then she did a great job on her last chance song. But as others said, she was just not a fav of the voters, so it would have been futile to save her. At least she made the tourgroup

As much as the judges love Phillip, if you listed to his singing in the group number, not good at all. He can only sing one type of song.

Heejun needs to go ... I am sorry ... I am sure that he has a lot of fans.  But an American Idol he is not.  He can't sing and has no personality.

Its purely an opinion, Slim. I don't have to take a big gulp of sewer water to know it takes bad, I can tell from the smell. And American Idol has been stinking for quite awhile. Because it does, I feel obliged to tell anyone that will listen that I believe this TV show to be rigged. Only an opinion. Flame on!

Listen, if Pia Toscano could be voted off, not even making it into the top 8 last year, no good singer is safe.  That still makes me mad... I didn't watch the rest of the show last year because of it.  But it's really the judges' fault... they used their save on Casey Abrams very early on and it came back to bite them in the @$$.  Considering what happened to Pia, I can live with Erika's departure.

touchy-feely: I think undeniably, you are about 70% correct in your post.  So, with respect, I have to ask: why do you think the show is fixed?  and what is your evidence?

America did NOT get it right last night. but that's not the real issue for me. My problem has to do with how the judges skew America's voting by not being critical of all the singers equally. The judges faves are easy to spot, Phil Phil, Elise (no matter how much she pouts), and Colton are the pets this season. I guess 'coz they're edgy and non-conformist or something. I got no problem with Colton, the young man's a rock star. No matter that Jessica sings the daylights out of everything and so does Holli. Forget idol girls, go to the voice, Christina Aguliera will help make you a superstar. I won't even get into how much Joshua doesn't need this ridiculous show. Go to a Christian Record label Joshua and sing the roof off the joint! AI is fixed, has been for years, no offense to Nigel Lythgoe, my hero.
