'The Voice' Recap: Votes and Victories

Ashley De La Rosa and RaeLynn are sent packing from the quarterfinals

By Vinnie Penn Apr 17, 2012 8:06PM

'The Voice'/NBCThe results show began with Christina Aguilera basically having to answer for dumping Jesse Campbell the night before. "I'm no stranger to controversy," the fighter declared, acknowledging message boards, Twitter, and the like. "I do have a strategy."

And after a pointless "Team Blake" performance (if you can call it that) with UK band The Wanted, we got to the results. Christina's crew was up first and, curiously (at least for me), Chris Mann gets to get all Groban for another week. Jermaine Paul was the victor -- according to America -- in the Shelton fold.

Thus, the "pick me" performances began, first with Ashley De La Rosa nervously rocking Gaga's "You and I." Then Lindsay Pavao delivered an emotional "Please Don't Go," getting teary-eyed in the end, and taking Xtina with her. Someday a producer will write the words "basket case" on a Post-It when Pavao is cutting a record in his studio. But, hey, it worked. Christina saved her.

Erin Willett kicked the Adele to the curb for a rousing "Proud Mary" by the time the dust settled and the Bieber fever subsided (he popped out to debut a clip of new video for his latest single "Boyfriend"). Then it was RaeLynn with the Band Perry's "If I Die Young," a bit too safe, if you ask me -- and I'm a RaeLynn fan. So is Blake. But, as the credits rolled and RaeLynn banged into Willett and looked as if she'd seen a ghost, it became abundantly clear ... neither of us just so happened to be tonight.

Thank heavens RaeLynn is GONE. That girl couldn't sing her way out of a paper bag. And talk about no diversity...at least all the other vocalists tried different genres. No taking the country out of that girl.
As for Ashley vs. Lindsey; I much preferred Ashley but oh well. I was surprised that Chris Mann is who "America" saved. I was also sorry to see Jesse go on Mon night. :(

Someone please explain what strategy Christina has? If it's to make sure she had the worst choices in the end that she could make then she's clearly done that? When your own co-judges and 90% of the viewing fans don't even understand what you're doing and think you're wrong, you know you've screwed up. No way Jess or Ashley should have been sent home and Chris and Lindsey stay. And Lindsey's crying had nothing to do with the song and everything to do with her realizing she was nearing the end of the song and getting closer to possibly being sent home.

Erin vs RaeLynn - I'm not a fan of either but there's no way I could stand to listen to a whole CD of Raelynn's with that nails on the chalk board voice.

Yes, Christina has had much success.  That has nothing to do, however, with her EGO overriding her JUDGEMENT.  Her several pointed comments about some on her team not being as 'open' to direction AND the fact that she seems to focus on herself a lot when performing with her team (unlike BLAKE, who chooses to focus on his TEAM rather than himself) suggest that she demands respect from her team members.  Maybe Jesse, being  in his 40's, wasn't as defferential to Christina's suggestions as the other.  I suspect he didn't do enough bowing and scraping before her.

Be that as it may, it's hard to deny he was the most vocally talented on her team.

Christina is clearly most critical of the best singers.

It looks as though she eliminates the best on purpose so she will not have future competition. She is the only judge that seems to exude,  "I am better than all of you".

On a side note, if your over a certain size, you do not wear the batman bottoms outfit on stage. She looked horrible.

This is the very reason I stopped watching Idol. It is plain to se the the producers and record execs do not want the same type singer winning each year. They choose someone from a different demographic every year. This way they can tap into the market of each spending group. Example.. Soul RB,country, pop, rocker, smooth sound etc. They want, not the best voice because that was clearly Jesse, they want rating and demographics. Think about this, for the first time they let the judges kick off the singers instead of America, why? Because they can get rid of Jesse who America would not have voted off, without him going the distance and exposing that the contest is rigged. Christina,as many has said, does not really have an ear for good talent, the contestants chose her because of her popularity. She really did not like Jesse from the get go because, yes he can sing better then she can and yes she was right, there's nothing she can teach him. There's no where for him to go but down in the singing department. She can't take credit for his talent for his transformation and that is her ego talking. He should have gone with Adam or Ceelo because they truly are the better judges of Voice talent on the show.

Christina is 0 for 2 with whom she sends home. OUCH. Two in a row...if it wasn't for those breasts I would think you should be the next to go....joking.  Really like the new look Christina is sporting.  Blake, he is classic.  Adds some great humor and knows his singers.  Good selection for him.

sometimes as Im watching these types of shows, I wonder if maybe they are fixed, like everyone already knows who is gonna win, sometimes its rather obvious that the judges are leaning toward one particular contestant and that is so sad, because a lot of these people are really better singers than the ones they choose to save.  Just saying????????Smile

The show lost a LOT of credibility in my eyes after what Christina did.  It smacked of, "I'm gonna do this just because I can and don't care what anybody thinks."  The move was self-serving.  She sacrificed Jesse to make a statement about herself.  When Levine was asked what he thought of her decision regarding Jesse, he should have had the nads to tell her she's an idiot, but he has to be around her fragile ego every day so I'm sure he has to walk on egg shells.  Sad.

@  Crafty I can't believe you people watch this crap. Don't you have anything else to do?

Hilarious coming from someone who took time to read the article, numerous comments and then post on the subject.

It would be a lot more interesting if the coaches actually gave a reason for their decisions. Really tired of hearing them talk about how hard it is and then seemingly arbitrarily picking one to go. And lately their choices have seemed nuts. Show loses interest when decisions lack intelligent justification.

I think Christina is tone deaf she has eliminated 2 good singers and pick Lindsay, there is something wrong there. Maybe she is thinking with her breast's there is more there than in her head.

to cry and not even finish the song, who wants to buy an incomplete song? How does not finishing it make her better? Well next week should be better!?

Christina Aguilera says she has a strategy.  My take is that she is sick of this show and wants out.  That is her strategy.  In order to be certain that happens she is intentionally being rude and obnoxious to some of the talent before her.  In my opinion, she is just jealous and much too much caught up in herself.  I can only hope that she gets her way and gets the boot for next season!  BTW, enough with the cleavage!

THANK GOD RaeLynn is GONE!!! She should not have been there in the first place. And Christina made a good choice keeping Lindsay, she is unique in the way she can change a song around to something totally different and it still sounds good. But most of all RaeLynn is gone and I don't have to listen to what sounds like, someone choking a cat!!!! She was a joke!!!!!!!

Gary Boyce, it's called The VOICE, not The Look! True, RaeLynn has a good voice, but so does Erin. The difference? Erin is more versatile in her song choices and shows her vocal range. RaeLynn played it safe and it cost her. Now, before you lambast me, I love country music and have loved it all my life. As Blake takes care of his team even after the final show, I'm sure he'll do the same this time for ALL of his team, not just RaeLynn.

Have NO idea why I continue to watch The Voice especially when you see how little Christina knows about judging talent.  She just doesn't get it and her strategy is to LOOSE.  She is doing an outstanding job at doing just that.  She said she "has to go with my heart"  I didn't know until last night that she is sitting on her heart.  She is a joke as a judge.  Also, again, someone need to teach her how to dress.  SHORT skirt showing her huge legs and low cut to show off her chest?  Tired now of how she presents herself as an "expert" judging talent and loosing good talent in favor of another loser.
