New "American Idol" judge Nicki Minaj has confessed she was afraid of becoming "too famous" if she signed on to the panel for the singing competition. The "Starships" hitmaker joined fellow new judges Mariah Carey and Keith Urban last year as they traveled across the U.S. to find the next big superstar. But now Minaj admits she had reservations about joining the TV talent show.

She tells the Hollywood Reporter that, as an artist signed with Cash Money Records -- one of rap music's most successful labels -- she was afraid of losing her cred with hip-hop fans. Minaj expains, "(It's) a judgmental culture in hip-hop ... Sometimes you are afraid of being too famous because it's almost, like, is that even cool? Being that accessible, someone you see on TV every week? I never pictured myself as that type of person. I'm still surprised that I decided to do it."

But after lengthy talks with her family, friends and colleagues, Minaj eventually agreed to join the show. And executive producer Ken Warwick insists she made the right decision. He says, "The perception of Nicki is unfair, really. Everyone thought she was just a daft, half-educated rapper. But she has got a heart, and it's starting to show, along with her intelligence, which threw some of us as well, and her eloquence and her grasp of what's going on. I think she'll surprise a lot of people." The 12th season of "American Idol" premieres on Wednesday, Jan. 16.

I for sure willnot be watching AI any more.....when they think that this kind of person entertains the public well the producers are dumb and dumber........she is so ugly she scares me!

She sure won't have a chance to "surprise" me. I refuse to watch that no talent, foul mouthed skank. Been watching AI since the beginning, but not this coming season.

Please tell me this is a sick joke.  I cannot stand her. She is mean, nasty and a poser of epic proportions.  She can't sing either did I mention that? Oh please make her go away.  She can't hold a candle to Mariah Carey or any entertainer. Well, with the exception of her huge ****. Now there she has a real competition with Kim kardashian. This article just made me want to hurl. She's worried about becoming too famous? for what? oh the world is crazy if this hoe thinks this for real.

Reading all of these comments comparing Gaga and Minaj is like attending comedy hour. So, true they both are very similar. Both Minaj and GAGA utilize Auto-Tune or are you all just whack jobs living under the ground thinking beauty is the sound of the screeeeetchhhhhhhhhh​h scratched across your chalkboard. Light, light on the road will benefit you all some! And no I didn't say the yellow brick road. Thought I had to clarify that for some of you low-ability thinking people on here posting peanuts! Blinded by lots of yellow I see and more like deep-seated yellowness. Yes, both travel with the dark arts in the back seat of their Pintos! Happy New you, but don't count on it, yet

Ugh I can’t stand that woman!! What an ego. I don’t even know where her ego came from! She looks like a donkey, and has no talent to boot. Just the mere fact that she is going to be on American Idol makes me not want to watch this season. If she had actual talent, she wouldn’t need all the gimmicky clown hair and makeup. People compare her to Lady GaGa, but to me the two are worlds apart. GaGa wears crazy costumes to project her own personality…a “don’t be afraid of who you are persona…be you, and f-anyone who judges you for it.” But Manaj just paints herself up in hideous makeup and wigs to call attention to herself, and over-ride her lack of singing skills.

For the first time since it started, I won't be watching AI.  Minaj is a walking, talking, buffooning, cooning minstrel show.  Anyone that has to prance around on stage with a big pink dick strapped around their waist in order to  entertain an audience because they lack any real talent, my opinion is not qualified to judge a singing contest.  AI lost all credibility as a serious talent competition when they stuck that clown on the judge's panel.

This CLOWN is one of the most unattractive "things" I've ever seen.  She is like a plastic doll except she's fat as the town dog.  How in the hell did this "thing" become anything more that a local joke?  Idol is on it's last legs, if this "thing" is considered to be an asset.  She also has an ego bigger than anyone I've seen since Lady GaGa, at least she can actually almost carry a tune, Minaj can't even stay in key.
