Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez engage in a three-round vocal battle to cap season

Who would ever have guessed that a novelty name would take one man and his guitar so far in a singing competition? No, of course Phillip Phillips is more than just a funny name from a novel I would have written when I was 12. He means so much to us now! And who would have guessed that Jessica Sanchez would be taking him on in the finale? Granted, Jessica is one of the strongest voices this season, but I was so convinced it would be Joshua Ledet that I spent most of the last week completely denying his elimination and thinking it would be a Phillip/Joshua finale.

It's the Philippines vs. the Phillippines (which is what Phillip's fans should call themselves). Have you guys heard this about the Philippines supporting Jessica Sanchez? It's not just "American Idol" anymore!

The judges aren't looking very finale-like, but I suppose they're saving their wow outfits for the real finale. This is just a pajama jam as we suffer through the final hours of this year's student council election. There seem to be a lot more (or maybe louder) Jessica fans in the house on this night, as Ryan Seacrest interviews them at the top of the show. Jessica says this is "crazy" and Phillip offers indistinguishable babbling because he does not give a single care!

Phillipmumbling.jpg
Oh, spectacular! For Simon Fuller's pick, Jessica Sanchez is singing "I Have Nothing" by Whitney Houston. It's about time someone did this song right this season. Sorry about that, Shannon Magrane. Jessica seems nervous for the first time, opening the show because of the coin toss. It's a tough song to sing, but it was good enough to warrant a creepy car-wash attendant stalker ("Bodyguard" reference! Watch it, you guys. You will love all eight three hours of it).

Ryan Seacrest rushes us through Jessica's four phone numbers (one number for each hour to vote!) and the judges have nothing, nothing, nothiiiiiiiiing ... to say because we just can't afford the time. We can't even afford a moment.

They finally got Phillip Phillips into some non-gray for this episode. He's wearing blue, and it looks nice on him. He's singing "Stand by Me" by Benny King for Simon Fuller's pick. It's a bit easier and a bit more relaxed. I'm not entirely sure Phillip hit all the notes or cared if he did or not. It got really nice toward the end, though. Phillip has a sensitivity to him that is very appealing.

This show is very odd without the break for the judges' comments. Ryan sends Phillip off so the judges can "gossip" about Round 1. Jennifer calls Phillip a "modern day crooner." I'm not sure I "get" that. Randy thinks Jessica won Round 1, and I agree. We don't have time to hear what Steven has to say because we have to squeeze in the premiere of Jason Derülo's "Undefeated."

So, let's all just relax, let the contestants change their clothes and celebrate Jason Derülo's "healing process." Look! He's bedazzled-neck-brace free! Truly "undefeated." Except he might have been defeated by this melody, which doesn't sound ... great. Oh, Jason. Please don't stand on that chair! You'll hurt yourself again. Thank you for the memories and dreams, Coca-Cola.

So, what was Jessica Sanchez's favorite performance of the season? She can't sing another Whitney song, can she? I'll bet it's "Dance With My Father." But no, it's practically another Whitney song: It's "The Prayer" by Celine Dion, which she sang for the judges before the top 24 round -- a wise decision, because it's new to us. And she gets to wear a pretty long, pink dress. She feels more emotionally connected to this song, you can tell, and she absolutely nailed it. Way to go, Jessica! You were saving that for this moment, weren't you?

JessicathePrayer.jpg

Phillip Phillips enjoyed Billy Joel week so much that he wants to sing "Movin' Out" again. I'll admit, I watched this performance back again. I didn't find it particularly remarkable that time, but it was one of his better moments tone-wise (and he can't really choose "We've Got Tonight" or "Volcano" so soon again, can he?). If Phillip wins this season, he owes Saxophone Lady a big peck and a check.

Steven gives Round 2 to Jessica again. Randy calls it a tie (cheap!), and Jennifer chooses Phillip. So, anyone could win.

Now, we will be subjected to the Winner's Songs. I don't know if there's any way these songs can be great, but at least they're not the same song anymore.

Jessica's winning single is up first. What type of artist mold will she need to break out of in a year or two? They've called her single "I Wanna Change Nothing," I believe, and it's a solid 5 out of 10. I don't find it particularly touching or catchy, but I assume she sang it well (we'll never know!). The lyrics were age-appropriate. A 16-year-old singing about how nobody knows what she's been through and how she's going to rebel sounds about right. Randy says he doesn't love the song but loves that she made something more out of it. She gave it "urban flavor," apparently. Jennifer agreed that, if it were up to her, she wouldn't have that be Jessica's first single either. Steven mumbled in agreement. So, we all hated the song! This doesn't bode well as we go into four hours of voting!

Phillip's song is titled "Home" -- straight, simple, and probably better for him as an artist. I bet he didn't get to write it, though. Oh, man. This song is good. As a non-teenager, I much prefer this song to Jessica's youthful pop ballad. It's road trippy and sensitive, and basically I am powerless to resist the charms of Phillip Phillips any longer. It was modern, fun and basically perfect. Damn. It has a hint of Mumford & Sons and a taste of Fleet Foxes. The judges rose to their feet, and we should just give Phillip the platinum microphone or whatever the meaningless trophy is now. Randy yelled about it for a while, citing Mumford & Sons and Fleet Foxes. Jennifer couldn't think of any other song that sounds like that (you need to listen to more music, J.Lo!). And Steven heard Paul Simon.

I have never witnessed such an obvious win before a finale before! OK, maybe Scotty last season. But still. Decimated. They'll both do well, but I think Phillip will have the title to shake. At the very end of the show, my unborn child, Scotty McCreery, returned to the stage to sing "Please Remember Me" as we look back at all the contestants Phillip Phillips groaned on out of here this season. I love you, Scotty. You are the "American Idol" of my teenage heart.

What do you think of Tuesday night's performances? Who's got the inside track?

The "American Idol" finale airs Tuesday, May 22, and Wednesday, May 23, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.

I was pulling for Joshua to win.  I thought he had great stage presence and the vocals.  His rendition of "It's a Man's World" was amazing.  I had recorded the show and played his song back several times, not believing what I had just heard and watched!  Alas, he didn't win but he'll get a recording contract and most likely be compared to Clay Aiken.  Clay didn't win his season either but he's much more prominent in the music industry than the winner for that year, whose name eludes me.  Rupert something?  Perhaps winning AI is a blessing in disguise for him.  He won't be beholden to AI and have to come back to the AI stage time and time again to fulfill contract appearances because AI was the catalyst for his career.

Good luck to P.P, the winner.  Wasn't my cup of tea but that's why there's such diversity in artists.  To each our own.

These comments are tiring.  Phillip won because he got more votes.  He got mine.  When I close my eyes, what do I want to listen to?  PHILLIP PHILLIPS.  It's not about who has a better voice, they get the good voices to the top, then we get to choose.   Phillip has a great voice, a unique voice, a unique style.  Jessica has a fabulous voice and YES, better than Phillips, but I WANT TO listen to HIM, not her.   And those of you arguing race make me laugh.  Voice had a black man win.  AI has had Fantasia.  Joshua is a great performer, but I like to watch him, not necessarily LISTEN to him.  There are plenty of races represented and if you are amazing...you'll make it to the top.

Cut out your complaining that does nothing but put down others.  Phillip won and he deserved it.  Jessica fans had an opportunity to vote multiple times, too.  She's excellent and still a winner with a huge future ahead of her.  We all know winning AI doesn't guarantee future success.  If people want her music, they will show it with their MONEY.

@mm564

get off the race card... did you watch THE VOICE this season?  a black man won

oh yeah.  jessica was TOO YOUNG... like duh.  u heard of michael jackson? donnie osmond?

marie osmond?  tanya tucker?   so age matters NOT.  (so those idiots who arent reading this, they were under 16 when they got their careers going)

of course any thumbs down will be from morons who dont read the substance of the info.

Phillip did not deserve to win.  Unfortunately, everything he sang sounded the same.  Different words, but the same harmony.  I can see why he would get the teen girl votes, he's adorable, but not the best singer/performer.  Jessica did not deserve to win either...the poor girl has NO personality, but may come with age.  Skyler was the best singer and performer of them all.  America got it wrong again.  I think this is the last year I will watch Idol. (though I might watch if Steven Tyler returns as a judge!)...yes, I'm a female in my 50's and think Steven is hot!)

Jessica Sanchez  & Joshua was robbed on AI. Will never watch the show again!

Hey mm564 get off the race card already!

This is about popularity, not race, and definitely not about who has the best vocals.

I am sick of people always complaining about race.

AI is not intended for Asians. Joshua is far better than Philips but he is black. Jessica is a winner no matter what but AI is a white thing. No more watching on this show its not talent that takes but a race thing.

I don't have TIME to stay up 2 hours and vote 200 times!  I have to get up early for work (as many working adults do) but the little kids can stay up and keep voting for their CUTE idol!

GET A MORE FAIR VOTING SYSTEM IDOL!!!!!  Give us 1 vote a piece OR maybe 10 votes and THAT IS ALL.  That is the only way I see it as being fair and not a cutsey popularity contest.
I believe the best performer will have a chance of winning.

The judges need to go.  GET NEW ONES. And make sure at least one of them WILL be totally honest!

American Idol needs to make major changes. First, the voting system needs an overhaul.  Second, the judges need some rules to follow.  They (mainly Paula) become way too emotionally involved. They shouldn't  be able to show so much favoritism. If things don't change for next year, I doubt I will even bother watching,  In spite of the ways things went, I am sure Jessica will have a chance at a successful career. Phillip, I'm not so sure about.  You could buy 1 CD and have it covered.  All of his will sound the same as the others anyway. Could save his fans a bunch of money.

This show is REALLY missing someone...and that someone is the brutally HONEST Simon Cowell!  I am DONE watching this show.  You should take heed to how "The Voice" does their voting system!  You can only vote 10 times.  American Idol claims they had 90 million votes...REALLY???  I mean REALLY?  Its the little young kids that will take the full 2 hours and vote hundreds of times, so out of those 90 million, it was probably only hundreds of kids voting over and over and over, and to top it off.....it is for the "cutest" guy/girl......NOT their singing ability!

These judges are so sappy.  They show bias (as in Joshua AND Phillip Phillips) so they pushed their strong opinions on the impressionable young little kids. It reminds me of the season where Adam Lambert and Chris Allen were the finalists.  It was and IS still clear Adam Lambert has made something of himself.....what has Chris Allen done?  NOTHING!!!
But the little girls thought he was "cute"....just like they saw in Phillip so they voted for him for that reason.  BOO to that.  It's wrong.....
Jessica was by FAR the best singer.....and I know she will kick A&*  in record deals over Phillip.
And in my opinion, Jennifer Lopez is just there to PROMOTE HERSELF!!!

I will stick to watching "The Voice"!!!!  They do a much better job, period!!!
Go away and be done with your show....American Idol.  Your a JOKE.

The other thing I think that is worth noting regards the voting HERE.  Yes, here on this site.  How likely do you think it is that as of yesterday, someone posts innocuously "Go Jessica Go!  Everyone in San Diego is pulling for you!"  and receices 24 yes votes and 57 no votes?   and then someone else, posts:  Phil is not a wannabe-anythiing.  He's stayed true to himself the whole season!  and gets 70 yes votes and 15 no votes.

Anyone familiar with Amazon.com's review page?  The accusation has been for quite a while that record company A & R assigned side projects, shall we say?   If you know my reference, you know what I say is true.  I suspect strongly that on this site, the same occurs, and if it occurs here, why are we all so sure it doesn't also happen with the phone voting system?

Right off the top of my head this morning, there are two (2) yes, only 2 things I hate unequivocally: the nanny state--which decimates originality, individuality, and free choice and the fact that only a white guy with a guitar can win "American Idol" (for the same reason).

If Phillip Phillips is American Idol material then I understand the problems with the rest of our society.  When the other males in the top twelve were on stage, the only one that actually sings worse than Phillip is He Jun

Reality TV  fire Carla Patton!!!  She narrated  discremenently  against everything on AI.  Such a disgrace to Reality TV .  This AI was One of the best produced and directed shows ever for a live  contestant production.    From her 1st statement till her last was nothing but sarcastic bashing of some of the greatest artist in the music / entertainment business of the world.  Did she say all this in spite or just trying to make a name for herself? What was she thinking? No one could put a production on like this (from stage, lights, graphics, entertainers, sponsors. etc etc  etc) in the world. I am so disappointed in the class of narration taken by Carla Patton of Reality TV.  I promise i will go out of my way to see that all this hoopla by  them will be eliminated, so this will not happen in the future.

Carla you just awoke a Sleeping Giant.

This show is BS!!! They just didn't know how to bring Jessica's talent to the music industry, Joshua as well. These two artists have a real talent, God's gift. Philip's performance makes me sleep all the time;

It is easy way out to choose Philip for American Idol...I won't watch the show ever again. It is all made up.
