The name of the game on "American Idol" this week is Queen, followed by Contestant's Choice. Please pretend I said that in a roller-rink deejay voice then played the "Ghostbusters" song.

Ryan Seacrest tells us that this stage has housed "no less than two shocking results." He doesn't think we can take much more -- not if we continue to consume red meat in this way. For me, it has been more than two shocks. I am shocked just by Jennifer's crazy C-3PO's sexy girlfriend look tonight. Can I handle 10 performances on this night? I am too weak!

I am also shocked that Randy, not Ryan, is narrating this introduction to Queen. Did Randy insist that he be the voice of definitive music knowledge and connections? Two dudes from Queen stopped by to counsel (very effectively, I might add!) the top 6 contestants before taking on their music. Man, they are cool.
Queenthecoolest.jpg

Roger Taylor and Brian May are playing with the top 6 as they sing a medley of Queen songs. They started with a soulless version of "Fat Bottomed Girls," and then we got a preview of who might do well with this song catalog as they took turns on "Another One Bites the Dust." As I'd hoped, Skylar is doing really well, and Phillip and Elise are doing as well as we had expected. Joshua is a bit out of place, and Jessica is just flat out annoying me on this night, growling out her part of "We Will Rock You." She's just being all 16-years-old about it, you know? I have no thoughts on Hollie during this medley, except "nice pantsuit."

medleypantsuit.jpg

Did Elise mess up when she went to "of the woooorrrrrrld" early on "We Are the Champions"? No matter. I was happy to see Roger Taylor and Brian May just slaying away up there, not caring that these teenagers don't have the life experience to make these songs personal, as they'd suggested.

Allegedly, Ryan Seacrest is ailing in this episode. So, that's why he's sitting on a stool to introduce Jessica Sanchez, singing "Bohemian Rhapsody." All right, Jessica. Where is my color and why did you turn into the great and powerful Oz? It was all right, not as exciting as this song can be, and she didn't get to the fun stuff ("Galileo, Galileo!").

JessicaBohemian.jpg

Steven said rock isn't Jessica's forte, but she was still good. Jennifer thought the vocal was beautiful but not so much on the "rock" performance. Randy actually loved it and appreciated the restraint. Randy's pin says, "Yo"! You been reading my diary, Randy? Ryan, please don't touch the contestants. We can't have another Hollywood Week-level epidemic on our hands.

Ryan does not look well, and this is my new obsession for the night. Can he make it?

Skylar Laine sings next, performing "The Show Must Go On." Skylar could really sing any Queen song, and I would enjoy it. She has the edge necessary to take these songs on. She is doing a good job with this song, but I would prefer just a hint more drama. She seems a little tired. But the show must go on, Skylar! It picked up toward the end for a satisfying conclusion. Steven loved it. The droid hooker of Tatooine got goosies, and Randy declared that Skylar's gotta have it. Whatever that means.  I think Skylar won the medley, though, for what it's worth.

Joshua Ledet is singing "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," which is an interesting choice for him. I think "Somebody to Love" would have been much better for him, but I guess he has to have fun this week to show some personality. Joshua is great. There is no denying that, but I don't know that this was the right fit for him. It's almost like his voice was too big for the song? The judges rose to their feet, though, so I guess it was good! Randy says Joshua is "so ready" and he loved it. Someone get me that "Yo" pin before I rip it off that powder-blue suit jacket. Jennifer says the Joshua part of the show is her favorite part, which could be the kiss of death for him. Steven thought it was fantastic. I think it was fun, but no one asked me.
Joshuacrazylittlething.jpg

Ryan is back on his feet! Could this be a moment of recovery before a Spanish flu-like fall? Stay tuned.

Elise Testone chose "I Want It All" and a red tambourine to play. It doesn't make her seem less nervous or self-conscious, though. I think this competition's got her in her head. This is the right Elise, though -- rocking out, in front of a band. This could keep her around another week, I'd reckon! Steven said this was the right song choice for her. Jennifer said Elise was in her element, and Randy said, "What a night so far!" Are the judges over Elise? I'm not sure. This was the right song, though. Randy called it one of Elise's best performances to date, and I agree.

Phillip Phillips is singing "Fat Bottomed Girls." Yes! This is what I wanted. I love this song, and I think Phillip can have some fun with it. And look at him, wearing oatmeal instead of gray! It is predictably delightful and didn't sound like the same performance he usually delivers -- a nice change of pace from Phillip Phillips. It was a bit too short, but I was also worried about his head exploding, so it worked out.

P2outofbreath.jpg

He was a little below the note, so I'm not sure it ever got there, but it was fun. Steven liked it, Jessica loves the "different flavors" of Phillip (Fifty Shades of Grey). Randy liked it but didn't love it. It's time for Phillip to get some tough love around here, I reckon.

Closing out the Queen songs, Hollie Cavanagh is singing "Save Me." Does that mean this entire show is closing with "The Climb"? But I'm getting ahead of myself. I had no idea they made pantsuits that small. I think "Save Me" is an appropriate choice for Hollie, who could be on the cusp again this week. It was going well, but her voice cracked at a key moment toward the end. She recovered nicely, and I think she was really feeling the emotions of the song this time. Good work, Hollie. Steven liked it. Jennifer is having trouble telling Hollie to marry robot, good singer Hollie with emotional, sometimes cracking Hollie.

Jennifer declares Skylar the winner of Round 1, and Randy offered that Hollie needs to step it up and that Elise and Joshua were also great. Then Steven reflected on the "new voice today," what with the Internets and the fancy microphones.

Round 2: Personal Choice

For the Personal Choice (which sounds like an off-brand line of products, right?) round, Jessica Sanchez is singing "Dance With My Father" by Luther Vandross. First, her fellow contestants will talk about her behind her back! Jimmy Iovine is getting shut out of this episode entirely. She was saved, and she is tiny. Phillip suspects that, instead of going to school, the government is working on her and making her voice better every week. This clip package only made me like Phillip more and didn't do much either way for Jessica. She looks better for this performance and seems a lot more connected. They got the wind machine going, as the song took it to the next level. Jessica really has such a pretty voice and the power to be the next great diva. It was beautiful, and I'm so thankful she didn't cry in the middle of it. Jennifer said it was the most beautiful rendition she's heard. Steven continued to compliment Jessica in general, and Randy said it was great, especially now that she connected emotionally.
JessicaVandross.jpg
What do the contestants think of Skylar Laine? She is a firecracker, loud and tough. Hollie called her "thick-boned," when she meant "thick-skinned." I like when they do this clip package: It's cute. She's singing "Tattoos on This Town" by Jason Aldean. She's playing the guitar and looks adorable. I really think Skylar has what it takes to win this competition. I hope the judges aren't counting her out. She knows what type of artist she wants to be, and now she is executing. It was great! The judges liked it, and Jennifer backhandedly congratulated Skylar on staying in this competition and improving. Then Ryan was like, "Tell us about your tattoos!" Go back to bed, Seacrest! You're not well!
Skylartattoos.jpg
Ryan Seacrest is looking well again, although his eyes aren't quite as bright as usual. Joshua Ledet is, according to his fellow contestants, loud and screamy. He is also messy. But who has time to clean when you're singing all the time? Joshua has chosen "Ready for Love" by India Arie. I love his jacket. This song is nice, and I like that Joshua is doing the gender-swap thing with his song choice, but it was a little forgettable, in my opinion. The judges are on their feet again, though! Steven is even turning around, encouraging the entire audience to stand! Randy is speechless. Maybe I'm just used to Joshua as a great singer. Now I'm like, "Show me something else!"

What do people think about Elise Testone? Do we know anything about her? It seems like the other contestants are annoyed by her. Yikes. I don't think her song choice of "Bold as Love" by Jimi Hendrix will help her, either. It's sort of a non-singing song. Every time the John Mayer cover of it comes on (if I'm listening to the "Continuum" album), I skip it. I don't know about her choice to scream parts of it like, "My yellow is in this case not so mellow!" She looked pretty, though! Steven told her to sing more familiar songs and not to pick cherries with her back to the tree. Jennifer said Elise slayed the song "so hard." Can that song really be slayed, though? Ah, I don't know. Randy doesn't know, either. He thought she was boxing with the song. It wasn't right.
Eliseboldaslove.jpg
The rest of the top 6 think Phillip Phillips does weird things when he sings. They are right! They joked about Phillip "pretending" to be sick with kidney stones or whatever he has. But now, Phillip is finally singing "The Stone" by Dave Matthews Band. This is a brilliant move because we can compare him and Dave Matthews side by side and see how similar he will or won't be as a new artist. It was all right. It sort of felt like a formality: He had to do it. Eh. Steven thinks Phillip found his niche. Jennifer thought it was "too obscure, too artsy." Those pants are obscure, J.Lo. Jennifer said, "I need you to do songs that can get you on that last show so you can win." Wow. Randy loved it. Randy, give me that pin.
Randyyopin.jpg
I laughed out loud at Julianne Hough getting excited for Phillip Phillips backstage. She was so adorable, especially when she realized she was on camera and got embarrassed. I can't believe she's dating Ryan Seacrest.

The top 6 is confused about Hollie Cavanagh's accent. She's part Texas, part English. They seem to like her, though. I do not like that she's singing "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus. People need to stop acting like this song is good. Maybe Hollie can make it good. She definitely sang it better than Miley, but the song is still just OK. God, her vocal clarity is so insane. For whatever reason, the judges and audience rose to their feet at the end of the song. I mean, it was good. But this song is not a good song! A triumph for Hollie, though, I suppose. Randy declared that Hollie is back.
Hollietheclimb.jpg
The good news is that it looks like Ryan made it through the night! He's got a little pep in his step, and he still has a cute "girlfriend." Jennifer warned Phillip that one "off" performance can get you voted off, but Steven said, "You've earned it. Do what you want to do and let America vote." I'm with Steven, actually. This whole competition and having one "winner" might be bull! Who are you worried about? Did anyone have two good performances? Is Skylar going to take it?

What do you think of Wednesday night's performances?

"American Idol" airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.

I'm with you Wayne!  Joshua is the whole package.  The Bruno Mars set says it all. Skylar is great but I'm not a Country fan so I might be predujiced.  Phillip is boring the heck out of me and his growling what the heck is he even saying singing.  I am shocked when I just don't get his appeal and the judges love him.  Oh, well.  Jessica is wonderful but a little stiff.  JOSHUA!   You Rock!

This season has amazing talent!  I can not believe how young all of them are, they are very talented.  I agree with others, I think it was time for Holly to leave.  Elise is a true rocker and that's cool!  Jessica, amazing voice and over all presence at 17, she is an amazing performer.  I really like Phillip and his style of signing.  I think the person who should win the whole thing is Josh.  This guy is a great singer, performer and entertainer.  Now my wife and daughter don't agree with me but for me he is the most versatile and the best at delivering the performance aside from his great voice.  American Idol is a terrific program and it seems every season I say that I am not interested but I get roped in at some point!

I cannot believe Elise was voted off. I think Holly should have gone home last night - she is sooooo boring!!! Skylar is the one I will be routing for now. I agree with below comment about Jessica . . . her voice is strong, just not a good voice!!! With Elise off the show I certainly won't look forward to Wednesday night American Idol like I have in the last several weeks!!! Sad

not that impressed with the top five.  phil and skylar and josh are the only ones with real talent.  the others are just well trained and jessica has a strong voice, that is all.  the sound of her voice is not beautiful, it is strong.  i dont even know why she is there.  it has no beauty. i find it to be a copycat christina aguilera.  her voice has one color to it, no shading.  skylar is great and so is phillip and so is josh.  i predict the top two will be phil and skylar with josh being bumped after the top 3.  good luck to all!!!

Well said Miss Tee, love josh and jess but I think final two will be Skylar and Joshua!

Joshua's second song was absolutely amazing! phil is no better thn a Taylor Hicks and definitiely not original, Skylar could win this but Josh is my fav and I do not understand the hate. Phil was very boring last night and it was his worst night all season. Joshua and Skylar I would say would be safe and the rest is up in the air even though i like elise and think jessica is awesome. Hollie did an awesome job on The Climb.

When Hollie picks her songs--she does a great job.

Skylar is really coming into her own and she seems to be outdoing Elise. Actucally, Elise is a pain--she hasn't got the charisma that Skylar has.

Have you noticed-Jessica isn't getting the attenton she was getting before. Someone must have called them down for their action.

Randy is constantly giving Joshua standing ovations. Joshua isn't acting like he deserves it.

well, who goes home tonight-Jessica????

Yea, Elise!!   She can really sing, I agree LKH!

Elise is professional. I don't blame her for having an attitude whenever she is in the bottom 3 every week. I'm not sure why she is continually in the bottom 3 and why people aren't voting for her. Maybe because everyone else feels she is safe and will get enough votes. As far as Josh, he is ok on some songs but the screaming is horrible. I like him most of the time but he is not worthy of standing ovations every time. What are those judges thinking of?  You have one that thinks he is somebody (Randy) then you have JLo that is very partial to some contestants then you have Stephen that is usually high most episodes and doesn't really know how to critique these singers. I like Stephen but as far as a judge . . . he doesn't cut it!!! Holly is quiet and boring. Most of the time I think she is out of key and her pitch is definitely off. Jessica, powerful voice but most of the time she picks the wrong song. Phillip is a cutie and I think he has done very well until last night and he really was terrible. I think he is full of charisma. His singing is different but he is good each week til last night. Skylar is an exceptional singer and performer and has a great personality. I think she will go very far no matter if she wins or not. Anyway, to make a long story short . . . Elise is AWESOME and should be the next American Idol!!!

educated3114 you don't have to listen to a whole cd of  phillips songs  listen to 1 you pretty much heard it all "just cant change"  they said it best you can  wear what you want, sing what you want when your there. not to win idol please style has none

Enough with the friggin standing ovations for Josh.  He's just ok.  I won't say he's horrible, but he won't sell pop records guaranteed.  If he wins it will be another Ruben Studdard fiasco.  Tell me again what #1 song he had??? yeh. Nobody remembers.

Jessica's 2nd song was nice but still not a fan. I want to smack Elise.  Bad ATTITUDE. They should emboss a stool in the bottom 3 with her name.  She'll be there tonight.

I think Hollie is sweet and has a powerful voice but more Broadway than Top20.

Love Skylar Laine's whole thing - she's got spunk and an awesome country voice. But another year of country?

Nobody can argue Phillips charm.  It just oozes out him.  He may not have the best overall voice but he's original, he is real and he would be an awesome role model for kids today.

I'm still not over Colton's departure so if America sends Phil home, I'm officially banning American Idol from my house!

I have something to say the judges do what they are supposed to do judge the contestants  so they get better and better if  they never criticized her she wouldn't have done so great as she did last night if a person never receives constructive feedback they  will  never ever get any better at what their  doing in life or their  job  there is  no growth when  constructive feedback is not given or received

Those of you who don't like Phil are just going to have to get over it, cause he's not leaving, especially after Colton got voted last week and Phil doesn't have to compete with him for the girl vote.  He reminds me more of Joe Cocker than D Matthews...maybe a combo of the two... Joe with acoustic guitar.

Jessica didn't do much for me this week.  She probably shouldn't have tried that particular song by queen and her second song didn't seem right for someone so young to sing.  Hollie sounded nice; her voice was the most similar to Freddie M, for the queen song, but, of course, it really isn't fair to ask anyone to sing his songs.  I dug the Hendrix song...nj Elise, thanks for sharing.  Skylar's performances get better every week, but I don't like country music.  Josh's second song was nice, not really my type of music either though.  Josh singing the queen song really kinda hurt to listen to...he does not compare well with Freddie at all...Freddie's voice was crystal clear and Josh seemed to just scream and grunt compared to the original.  Tough to say who will get voted this week.  I don't think phil....or skylar will be in bottom, but beyond that, tough to say.

i actually think Elise is way above all the others!  Jessica should have went when the VOTERS voted her off!  and hollie can go too!

I have to say a Queen night is very tough on these kids.  Not only is it pretty much impossible to fill Freddie Mercury's shoes and face some serious backlash if you make a classic song "your own" but allot of their songs depend on having multiple singers.  Perhaps none more than Bohemian Rhapsody.  So particularly tough song choice for Jessica.  Jessica was better on the second song but I'm not so over the top about it as the judges or Carla.  I actually liked Jermaine Jones' rendition of it better.  Which brings me to my conspiracy-theory-of-the-week tm.  Did the judges bring back Jermaine so that when he was disqualified, he'd be permanently disqualified and they wouldn't have to deal with the issues surrounding him anymore?  I find it hard to believe Idol took that long to discover an outstanding bench warrant when the guy was on national TV repeatedly.

Well it's clear  they want a girl to win Idol.  If it has to be a girl, my fav is Skylar than Hollie.  Jessisca is too serious and Elise has a "Big Time" attitude.

Philip is my all time favorite and Joshua is another Taylor Hicks.  I'm not sure why there is never a "rocker" in the finals.  The ones that have been on Idol have done really well.

JLo and judges- I am so tired of you all unfairly critizing Hollie, please STOP - and Jennifer you have lost a fan because of your behavior.  I LOVE Hollies voice and how she keeps fighting and climbing to reach the top. Last week the judges said their advice to be more emotional helped Hollie - no, it didn't - she has an amazing emotional voice all along - you judges just wanted your favorites Jessica and Josh to win so you criticize the other contestests to try to force the American voter to vote for YOUR favorites - even begging us to vote for YOUR favs. And judges stop with the ovations for Josh - he's not that great with his screaming and screeching voice with EVERY song. We need fair and impartial judges American Idol - bring back Simon and Paula!!!

Personally I hope Hollie and Skylar make it to the finals - love their voices, love to watch them perform, and would defiinitely buy their CD's and attend their concerts. I used to like Elise but not with her lastest choice of songs. I do not like Phillip's facial moves when he sings.  I hope Jessica and/or Josh go home tonight - luckily I record the show and always fast forward past their performances - i cannot stand to hear and watch them sing.
