'American Idol' Recap: Five Alive
South Carolina native Elise Testone is the latest to get the hook
By Carla Patton
I sure hope Ryan Seacrest is feeling better! The show just isn't the same when he half-asses it (or would his illness reduce it to quarter-assing?). He certainly looks recovered.

Before things move forward, "The Queen Extravaganza," hand-picked by Brian May and Roger Taylor themselves, performs "Somebody to Love." I remember hearing about this, and everyone talking about how much this guy looks and sounds like Freddie Mercury. I'm all about that sassy guitar player, though.

I enjoyed this performance very much. I will never get tired of seeing Roger Taylor and Brian May bust out on stage. They are just the coolest! Everybody else, go home.

Ryan tells us it's hard for the contestants because "their bond is working like magic," and they sing that darned "I've Got the Magic in Me" song that I swear has been covered on a Ford Music Video every single year and maybe twice this year. Don't applaud for that, audience. It does not merit applause. Hollie looks amazing tonight!
And now, the "American Idol" contestants go to TMZ, which tends to be a segment I enjoy. Skylar is just so adorable. It turns out there's a male strip club called "Mantasia." No one had any solutions for Elise, who looks mad by default. Why was Nigel Lythgoe there, though? He must have invited himself.

What did Jimmy think of Elise? He thinks she picked the wrong Queen song (What?! I thought it was great!) and thought it came off as "clubby." Jimmy thought "Bold as Love" was a bad choice because it's more of a performance piece for someone playing the guitar and singing. What did America think? One is safe. One is in the bottom. Jessica is safe. Elise goes back to her stool, which is still warm from her regular spot in the bottom three.

Hollie and Joshua are next. The friends! Hollie is more nervous than Joshua, probably. Who does Jimmy think should be more nervous, though? Jimmy thought Hollie did a good enough job with "Save Me" and thought "The Climb" was a great choice. There was an odd break before we looked at Joshua's highlights. Jimmy thought Joshua did a great job interpreting both songs and choosing them. Smart! "If Joshua gets voted off tonight, there is something wrong with the competition, the voting, the entire ball of wax," Jimmy says. What a dated expression.
Best friends. Who stays? Who goes? Hollie is in the bottom three. Joshua is safe. Jimmy will be relieved to know there's nothing wrong with this ball of wax.
Oh, goodness. Steven Tyler is in a Burger King commercial, immediately followed by Jennifer's Kohl's commercial. But where is Randy's commercial?
Now Katy Perry sings "Part of Me," and Steven Tyler enjoys another chicken tender becoming a part of him. She seems tired. Maybe she caught the Ryan Seacrest too-much-money flu.
Now it's down to Skylar and Phillip. I thought Skylar had a great night, but Phillip is a favorite! Let's see what Jimmy has to say. Jimmy thought her second song was a "little self-indulgent." Jimmy thought she got knocked out in Round 2. Phillip "Lady-killer" Phillips was divisive. Jimmy lets us in on a secret: Phillip was sick this week, too! His energy suffered as a result.
Skylar is in the bottom three. Phillip is safe, and Phillip will probably win this whole thing. Skylar is safe, though, so she heads back to the couches. Whew!
Ryan sends the four contestants who are safe back to their couch. They object, but Ryan is in charge. Elise is eliminated. It had to happen. She was great, but this just wasn't the right place for her. It's too bad that all these contestants have to see their moments play over a twangy Scotty McCreery tune. Goodbye, Elise. Get back with your band!
What do you think of Thursday night's results? Did America get it right?
"American Idol" airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
Slim, I have to advise against that. I once tried to figure someone incomprehensible out and I ended up having a major stroke and spending 2 months in the hospital(I'm quite sure that was the cause and not that I weighed 300 lbs(not quite as bad as it sounds at 6'4" but still bad(whoa nested parens again!))) Strangely I'm not as young as I used to be either, though my best friend tells me I'm supposed to turn 39 for the second time next August.(She's already turned 39 a bit, but I'm not quite sure how that works..)
I just have to say that something is Seriously wrong when I start missing Simon Cowell and Jimmy Iovine seems like a breath of fresh air. It occurs to me that if these judges went to the x-factor and judged the same and the x-factor judges came to AI and acted as they acted on that show, both shows could work. I wasn't watching AI back in season 1, but I think they've had some good contestants over the years, though few have actually won out, but probably a big key that they found Kelly that first season.
Deb5779; I totally agree with you! I think Elise has the voice and the talent, but the judges beat her down so much every week that she developed attitude as a defense. Do you think the judges saw her as a threat to their faves?
Country may not be some peoples choice, but I thought this show was about who had the best voice and talent, not the most popular genre. I believe Skylar is the only one left who's the "whole package".
Slim, your kid's too old now. Everybody knows only 6 year olds can predict these things, not 7 year olds. I'm Going Slightly Mad is a bit obscure, but it suits me. Main point there is you can't acurately judge a group that did that much music by just a few songs. Sure, some like those 2 and We Will Rock You they just had fun with, but some of their best had complex, multipart vocal arrangements(kind of an odd choice to have these kids sing IMO) My mother's favorite, Elvis Presley, for example released a ton of music despite dying in his early 40's. Some stuff he was just having fun with and other's still hold up. Speaking of which, isn't it about time for these kids to do an Elvis week? *cackles*
Just a little, Slim, but they kinda earn it. They never fail to try to turn things to politics, then clam right up just as quick. Do I hear crickets?
Well I can definitely see where Randy would be Curly but the other 2 bear a strong resemblance to Larry. Damn now I'm going to be up all night trying to decide which stooge.. er.. judge.. is which. None of them should really be bad as Aerosmith is among my favorite groups, Jlo has been a much better actress than she proved to be a few weeks ago, and Randy was a good buffer between Simon and Paula, but instead of getting better they've actually managed to get worse. Randy seems unable to give an honest criticism that doesn't involve calling everyone dog or dude or announcing that they're in it to win it(of course now they've gotta have it). Steven thinks almost everything is beautiful and talks of singers taking him to another place. I think it may be something entirely different doing that. Jennifer, of course, seems to be obsessed with her 'goosies'(as near as I can tell she has 2 of them and they're always there)
available, I might have liked to have seen Nick as well as Jen Hirsh make it into the top 12(13), but I know Jen(and I believe) Nick made it to the votes so if the voting can be trusted people at least had a chance(though I think that first vote is harsh going from 24 to 12(or 25 to 13)
So while I don't completely agree with their wildcard picks or who they gave a chance for them, I can't really fault them much for that and I think they mostly brought the best available to the votes. It's been their behavior since and especially the farce surrounding the save that's been lacking.
