'Dancing With the Stars' Recap: Paso Double-Take

Frontrunner Jennifer Grey flames out with the judges

By Kate Mulcrone Oct 25, 2010 8:07PM

It’s rock week. What does that mean? The "DWTS" house band had to learn a bunch of new songs, like usual, and the costumes had lots of sequins -- like usual. It was also dance marathon night, which meant that each star got two scores.

If she’s not at the top, Jennifer Grey is at least top two. But tonight? She fell almost to the bottom of the leaderboard, leaving Brandy to take the top spot for the second week running. The pop star dominated in both the individual and marathon rounds.

The rest of our stars are almost tied up. Very few points separate the bottom five contenders from each other, so anyone could go home this week.

Here’s how our stars rocked out:

Audrina Patridge

Her crisp and precise paso doble just didn’t have the passion or the craziness you need with a larger-than-life Queen song. Carrie Ann praised Audrina for her progress throughout the season, but was clearly looking for a little more spirit behind the moves, as were Len and Bruno.

Paso doble: 24/30

Marathon: 8

Total: 32/40

Kyle Massey

Kyle can’t seem to catch a break. Both this week’s tango and last week’s "Charlie’s Angels"-inspired foxtrot were huge hits with the audience and got nitpicked by the judges. Carrie Ann pointed out some difficulty Kyle and Lacey had coming out of a spin and Len told Kyle that he needs to work on his technique. Their scores could put our Disney prince in real danger.

Tango: 23/30

Marathon: 7

Total: 30/40

Jennifer Grey

At the promising start of her paso doble I thought the only thing I’d have to criticize tonight would be Jennifer’s terrible hair extensions. Unfortunately, she and Derek really flubbed this one: their timing was a little off, Jennifer had a serious stumble coming out of a spin and the whole routine was frenzied. Bruno called her a woman on the edge of a nervous breakdown and then waved his arms around. Ouch.

Paso doble: 20/30

Marathon: 9

Total: 29/30

Rick Fox

A tango to Van Halen? Why not! I’m starting to believe that Rick and Cheryl can pull off just about anything. He was a little stiff at the beginning, but Rick turned in a fantastic performance. His control throughout the routine was amazing: he didn’t sacrifice any passion for the precision of his movements. I think this was Rick’s best performance to date.

Tango: 24/30

Marathon: 6

Total: 30/40

Bristol Palin

The tango is the undoing of many a star, but Miss Palin is bucking the trend. Her footwork was excellent, but she broke hold toward the end of the routine. The judges were pretty forgiving with their paddles, however, and called the performance Bristol’s best to date.

Tango: 23/30

Marathon: 5

Total: 28/40

Kurt Warner

Kyle might get all the attention for his over-the-top performance skills, but Kurt is waiting in the wings. What his tango lacked in polish it made up for in sheer theatricality.  For the second time in the broadcast Bruno stood up and waved his arms around, this time to demonstrate bad form. The audience seemed to love the routine, however, so maybe the voters will too.

Tango: 18/30

Marathon: 4

Total: 22/40

Brandy

Every Latin round has a hot tango, and this was it. Len called Brandy and Maks’ fierce routine the dance of the night. Brandy’s intensity was to be envied, even though she slipped up a few times toward the end.

Tango: 26/30

Marathon: 10/10

Total: 36/40

Who won over the judges? Brandy and Audrina

Who won over the crowd? Kyle, Rick and Kurt
Who needs to step it up? Kurt, Bristol and Jennifer

I agree with Eagle Eye. The "contest" has to be rigged. And Mountainbird is right that we should be able to see the audience votes. I must assume it is rigged to create controversy, and to keep certain contestants on longer, in order to boost ratings. Well, they just lost another viewer. It's bad enough I have to mute the music so I can tolerate the show; I won't tolerate dumping someone like Audrina to keep Kyle and Bristol. They're OK dancers, but not good enough to stay at the expense of more entertaining dancers. I wish ABC had the guts to respond to the comments below.

gws, back up the bus! You are the one who is making this political. Can't anyone post without using "liberal" like a swear word, or infusing political rhetoric? This is about DWTS. Sure, the Palin girl is doing better, and trying very hard. We admire her for that. But she is not as talented as some of the others. Nor is the Disney kid, Kyle, even though he tries. Booting Audrina to keep a weaker dancer on has to be due to some hidden agenda - favoring participants because of political clout, race, employer's clout, something. Find some other soapbox for your political rantings. This is about dancing. To bad music and inconsistent judges. Lighten up!

I keep reading these comments and I wonder why.  I cannot believe the hatred that some of u so called liberals have against Bristol Palin and her mother.  To me Bristol is what the show was supposed to be about....taking a non-dancing celebrity and make them into  a dancer.  It seems to me that Mark is succeeding she has improved every week....Just a little.  Does everything have to be political.  I do agree about Carrie Ann she has been very rough on Jennifer and I believe she's as agenda she is reported as having said(i did not hear her say it) that it was time for a black to win.  If she did say it she ought to be kicked off the show.  Bruno can go with her, he is disgusting.  As far. as the music I agree should not be used in ballroom dancing.

I agree with Len: where is the justice? It makes absolutely no sense or logic that Audrina and Jennifer were at the bottom when they had the best scores and obviously are the best dancers. We were shocked and so disappointed. And I agree with many posts: the so-called music is unbearable and is not music to dance to. I mute the TV so I don't have to hear it. What I really don't understand is: why doesn't DWTS show us the number of viewer votes calculated against the judges votes so that we actually see how and why dancers are rated? It almost seems as if it is, perhaps, shall I say it: "rigged"! What else can I think - it's too unbelievable.

I was shocked that Audrina and Tony were sent packing. Tony deserves a win. He is a good professional. Now my votes go with Maks and Brandy. Last night Jennifer and Derek should have been the ones eliminated. Everyone thinks she is going to win, but not me. Just because she danced in "Dirty Dancing" doesn't make her a winner. I personally don't think she can cut it. And it shows every week. This first dance where she cried over Patrick Swayze is what got the crowd. And she thinks she can win on that. Now as for the rest of the show...ABC please get rid of Brook Burke. That girl's voice cannot carry over the crowd. I have a hard time understanding what she's saying over the noise of the audience and music. You need someone who's voice can be heard. Tom does a wonderful job, but get rid of Brook Burke. I hope Maks and Brandy win this competition. He deserves it also. And as for the judges, I believe they are being fair, with one exception..Derek. For some reason, they seem to favor him. I am beginning to think he is Len's adopted son...lol. The favortisim shows all too well. And I agree with what e1 is saying about the music. Tony said it in his statement about the Tango. It's hard to do a tango when you don't have the traditional music. That's why Jennifer and Derek's tango looked so good...they had the right music. Change the music! And get RID of Brook!

I have been watching DWTS since it started now I will not watch DWTS any more. I can't believe that Bristol Palin is still on. She is terrible, Tony and Audrina get voted off that's bullsh*t. Now I know DWTS is "FIXED". I really enjoby watching the stars and the professional dancers, not now I can find something else to watch I'm really disappointed.

DWTS are you really serious??????????

Bristol has got to go.  It is obvious that the only reason she is there is because you are in full support of her mama and that republican tea party!!!!!

she is the worst dancer you have had in 10 seasons!

First off, how any professional can dance a tango or paso doble to the music that is played on this show is beyond me.  It sucks and does not characterize the dance being presented.  It sucks.

As for Jennifer faltering, don't blame it on the judges.  While I think she deserved higher scores last night, this is all the fault of Derek.  Derek is a shameful exhibitionist and over dances his students.  As a former ballroom teacher, I can tell that these people take too many risks with their students abilities.  It is all based on self-interest:  win at any cost.  Last night, it was obvious to me that Derek was shoving and pushing Jennifer instead of leading Jennifer.  She should win this contest on her abilities -- and I stress "her abilities" -- and not Derek's pride and self-interest.  And Len, who I would think has judged many ballroom competitions, is right when he chides the professionals.  Max, on the other hand, brings out the inherent strengths of his students and fares much better as a result.  Someone should remind Derek that he isn't the only one competing.

This is pretty typical DWTS.  Same thing happened last year with Derek and his partner - they DO NOT score all contestants the same!!  I like Brandy but she wasn't "dinged" as much for her misses as Jennifer and Derek were and the same disparity existed between how they scored Rick Fox and Kurt Warner.  You can't give one person a 6 because they didn't do as good as you thought hey should.  When I first started watching I thought the audience participation was going to be the unfair end; but the judges definitely have their favorites.

Good for Bristol!  She most likely will not make it to the top three,  but she did show all the HATERS who had her going home in the first round & talked so rotten about her,  that she can dance & just needs to lose her shyness!   Even if she leaves tonight she can go out with her head up & a proud smile on her face!

Atta girl Bristol!  Never let the  B A S T A R D S  keep you down!

Maybe it's just me, but I, for some reason, think that Jennifer & Derek are getting bad scores for a reason. The producers know everyone thinks she's a ringer & since Derek had the ringer LAST season, they are trying to make it look like he doesn't this time.  I didn't agree with the judges in the marathon, Audrena just basically stood there & watched for Tony's directions, she should have gone first.

The rock and roll music was no worse than the usual trash they play on the show. How about a night of playing a waltz for the waltz, a tango for the tango... I am tired of pop noise, and enjoy the few times the performers get to dance to decent music. Now to get some decent judging. Brandi was possibly the worst in the dance marathon, yet won? Kyle keeps getting good scores for adequate performances, Kurt consistently gets scored about 2 points below whatever he deserves, Bristol gets propped up scores so her mother doesn't get offended, there is no consistency to criticisms. Besides canning Bolton and Situation (although not soon enough), I haven't been very impressed with the judging at all. And dump Lacey; bring back Edyta and give her a good partner. Or just dump Lacey and whomever she is with any season.

I actually ended up muting the terrible music that the contestants had to dance to. It was unbearable. I thought Carrie was also insufferable as she berated Jennifer, who at her worst, is better than most. Keep Rock and Roll for the So You Think You Can Dance group.  I wasn't fond of the movie theme music of the previous week either. What has happened to the selection process? It's gone bonkers! And the dancers can't get it either. And that's a complement to the dancers!

To whomever it may concern:  I don't know how to put this other than to say that Monday Night the 25th's Rock and Roll theme was horrible. I'm sorry, I don't know how to say it anymore delicately than that. I understand the theme of Rock and Roll and that's very american but what does Rock and Roll have to do with ballroom dancing? A lot of the dancers by your judge's admission didn't do well - don't you think that quite possibly that could be related to the music that they were given to dance Ballroom dancing to? I've been dancing for 40 years, all styles of dance, so trust me when I tell you this was not a hit. I do not take the time to email and give advice like this or care to do this at all so you won't hear from me again. I just hope for your sake and for my family's sake who truly enjoy the show that you tone it down a bit and stay within the confines with the way you started the show and not get too outside the box.  Just remember, IF IT'S NOT BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!

I totally thought that Derek & Jennifer were better that Maks & Brandy in the dance marathon.  Brandy did a lot of wandering around and not a whole lot of dancing toward the end.  I think the judges are too up in Brandy and it doesn't matter how she does, they are going to give her better scores.

First I just gotta say Brooke's dress was one of the most horrific things I've seen in a long time. It looked so ridiculously stupid...I couldn't believe it, it ALMOST distracted me from her terrible hosting......almost.

Second Carrie Ann drives me nuts....I have NO respect for this woman. While she sits and drools over Kyle (astonishment here) and Rick Fox (can't blame her for that one) she then manages to find EVERY nuance and nit pick about everyone's dance. I absolutely DISAGREE  with the judges on Kurt Warner's dance. I thought he finally found passion and poise. I really enjoyed it.

I felt so bad for Jen and Derek. The mistakes, the LOUSY dance itself, and the horrible song...nothing went right for them.

Bristol had her best dance tonight but out of all of them I think she is the one to go. Her or Kyle.
