'Dancing With the Stars' Recap: Hardly a Fairy Tale Ending

Brandy and Maks' elimination sends shock waves through the crowd

By Kate Mulcrone Nov 16, 2010 9:06PM

If you missed this week’s results show you might have done yourself a favor.

There were audible gasps and boos from the audience as Brandy was cut from the show. The pop singer looked terrified as she stood onstage waiting to hear the results and absolutely heartbroken after they were announced.

When Brooke asked her how she felt about her elimination, Brandy simply said "I don’t know how to feel." Her partner Maks was a little more outspoken, "I love that the show represents the people’s choice."

Judge Bruno Tonioli was less diplomatic. He stood up and begged people to vote more often.

As the credits began to roll so did the tears. Host Tom Bergeron called tonight’s elimination "the cruelest cut" and I have to agree.

Dried your own tears yet? Then here’s a rundown of our three finalists’ performances this week:

Jennifer Grey

Jennifer and Derek had themselves a perfect week! They debuted both a spirited, sexy, totally fluid cha cha and perhaps the best waltz the show has ever seen. It was thoughtful and measured, just beautifully articulated. Even if Jennifer doesn’t win next week, she sure has earned her place in the "DWTS" Hall of Fame.

Kyle Massey

Kyle and Lacey had their best week ever, beating Brandy out for second place on the leaderboard. Their samba set a breathless pace, but Kyle somehow made it look easy. His rhythm was right on, his footwork was the best I’ve ever seen it, his hips were perfect and his arm extension was great. Kyle and Lacey’s Argentine tango was almost as energetic as their samba. Len praised Kyle’s enthusiasm, but didn’t have too much to say about the dance itself. Sometimes numbers speak louder than words, eh? Kyle may be the underdog heading into the Finals, but I have faith in him!

Bristol Palin

Bristol and Mark’s paso doble was beautifully, intricately choreographed, and struck just the right mood. I believe the word is smoldering. The pair’s waltz was equally well-done: the technique was excellent throughout, but a particularly well-executed series of spins about halfway through the routine really stood out. Did anyone really expect Bristol to make it to the finale? No. But if she turns in performances like these next week, she’s got a real shot.

I hope there is a record number of comments to this show and they go back to the network.  If this is a play for ratings using politics they should think again about the other people involved who have talent.   This is the most ridicules show of a popularity contest (because of her mother) and not talent contest ever going.  Not that Bristol has not improved, not that much, but there were a lot of people who went home early and should have still been there longer.  I don't think Brandy would have won necessarily but she surely should have been in the finals.  Her "poor me" attitude and Maks being a "true jerk" didn't help but she did much better.  I have never seen the judges react so negatively to the results each week as they have this time.

I was TOTALLY STUNNED by last night's elimination.  Brandy really got the short end of the stick.  She is an amazing dancer and did not deserve her fate last night.  Bristol should do the right thing and bow out and let Brandy take her place in the finals.  Yes, Bristol has come a long way, but she is not near as good as Brandy.  Unfortunately, I think because of who her mother is played a big part in her remaining as a contestant as long as she has.  It would be a real disappointment if she took the ball this season.

The idiot producers of this fiasco thought they were going to have another Republican dog to kick around, and make a fool of like they did with DeLay. This time it didn't work out so well did it? It's called THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE! Bristol, and all of the people behind her, rammed it right down all of their throats. Now they're all licking their wounds just like Obama was the morning of the 3rd. Brandy can go back to singing the blues, and Maks isn't going to have such a large audience to listen to all of the smart a$$ comments that pour out of his Russian mouth. That's what happens when you pick on someone who DOESN'T DESERVE IT! Next time they should choose their battles more carefully.

The show is called "DANCING with the STARS"....not "Who Can Learn How to Dance".

Bristol is not a 'star'....she gained publicity through her mother which is to be expected when a family member is in politics or in the spotlight.  She should have never been on the show.

Brandy was totally robbed and Bristol, IMO, should have stepped up and admitted the wrong person was sent home.  I sure couldn't live with myself if that happened to me, but then, that's me.

The shows credibility has gone WAY down....the voting at this point should only be up to the judges who are judging on talent, not ballot stuffing.

i love it best season yet the people are voting the way there voting

because of the judges cruel comments to dancers after all there not

suppose to be proffessional dancers like jennifer gray had dancing experience

brandy too the only two that should be up there now are bristol and kyle

they have progressed each week getting better thats what the spirit of the

show is about i love it judges tried to get rid of bristol from the start

and finally the people stood up for her thank you voters for keeping the

judges in check and the only way to put it is if you dont vote dont complain

all my votes go to kyle and bristol

What a joke! Bristol can not dance, she is slower than a turtle and has no rhythm.

Brandy was totally robbed b/c most of America apparently has really bad taste.

Remember people this a dance competition, you don't vote for people because of who someone's mother is or your political choices. This should be the last season.

I am just surprised that all the people making these comments aren't in therapy for anger issues.......

READ the signs people, Kyle, Jennifer. Bristol is taking this season's title to Wassila wether you out perform her or not. Is it fair? No! it ain't, but there's nothing you can do about it!

Bristol should not be in finals!!!! I agree that they should not have dancers on the show however, there where many other contestants that should be in it but not Bristol!!!! I wonder how much her mother is involved in this.   If we are going to blame the voters for voting her in, then new guidelines need to be set by the Dancing with the Stars production staff.

Bristol a star????if she wins, I'll stop watching a entertaining show that has turned political...why does "Mama Palin" get face time every week...I agree with one comment that Bristol has been a whinner! The best dancers have always taken the "ball", not the most improved...I think Brandy was robbed...she is also "much improved"....kudos to (no personality) Bristol for her effort, but she does NOT belong in the top three!!!!! If she wins...I hope the show falls on it's face!!!!!

As a fan of the show i feel deeply offended that the show´s producers would have us believe that bristol palin has survived this long based only on the audience´s vote. Gimme a break!!!!

I once read an interview where Bristol claims to be "doing everything on her own" (parenting, earning a living, maintaining a home, etc.).  I doubt that very seriously.  However, the very adult and responsible thing to do, in this instance, would be for her to stand up and say "I did not advance on the merit of my own talent and am removing myself from the rest of the contest".  This is yet another example of a Palin that cannot understand when they are not qualified.

both brandy and jennifer have dance backgrounds. they should never have been on the show in the first place. both of them have whinned and have been ****y the whole season.  bristol and kyle workede hard to get to this point. remember its supposedmto be be about people who DO NOT HAVE DANCE BACKGRORNDS. GO KYLE!!!!!!

The judges can "ACT" as surprised as they like.  It's their fault.   How can they give Palin all 9's MOnday  night and and only give Brandy 9's.  Bull sh*t.   The judges wanted Brandy out so their favorite "Baby" can win it all.   This show gets worse every year.  I'm done.   GO KYLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they've found someone who is tampering with the votes.  There can be no other explanation because Bristol is not a star!  and....... She has not improved.  Her footwork sucks, she has a deadpan face, no emotion.  People say Jennifer and the others play that emotion game .... what about Bristol?  OHHH, I'm at the bottom of the leaderboard, boo hoo.   Crying  Ohhhh I miss my baby, boo hoo.   Crying   Ohhh I miss my home boo hoo.  Then when she learns she's ok, she says "I belong in the finals because I am the most improved."  Baring teeth  And then she forgets the steps. Thinking  My son said that the only way he would feel that Bristol has improved in dancing is if he compares her with Kate Gosselin.

The results from last night are ridiculous!! what is wrong with people?? Bristol need s to go away and it is a tragedy that Brandi , for that matter Kurt ever left...This is enough for me. I will not watch the finals as the best are not being represented. Bristol is a clumsy, nonmusical non deserving individual. She is awful to watch and I am appalled. Is this a dance contest, a political contest for her mother or what?? I agree the integrity of the show is in jeopardy. I am disgusted.

This will all work itself out in the Finals anyway.  Remember that there is a final dance that the public does NOT get a vote on, and the judges will have the final word, as it should be.  Everything that comes before the Finals is designed to entertain more than determine the true BEST dancer.  That's why there's almost always been someone in the semis and sometimes Finals that just doesn't belong because they have reached that level from popularity votes that count as much as the judges' scores.  The fail-safe is in the Finals.  You folks need to chill.

I too am horrified with these results. I remember once I tried to text in my vote for Brandi and I got a reply thanking me for voting for a different couple! I will make sure to vote next week and try to convince everybody else I know to vote to  make SURE Palin is finally booted off the show. Bristol should do the right thing and LEAVE the show. She knows she is not deserving and she is taking the place of much better dancers. Please Bristol, for once, do what's right and leave the show. Don't be another Sanjaya (from American Idol!)

If anything I believe that this shows that the tallying of the votes by ABC is legit. The executive producer already made comments to the media last week that it was evident that there was ballot stuffing going on. I'm sure that the ABC execs hoped that last nights results would more reflect the actual talent of the remaining celebrities and help to diffuse this controversy. I've always thought that the judges scores should account for 75% of the scoring to help make it more of a dance competition, and less of a popularity contest. In the past seasons there have been frequent controversial results that were driven by a celebrities large fan base. That's what ABC wanted. After all this is a reality show that thrives on audience participation to help generate ratings. Where I think they screwed up in choosing Bristol Palin is they underestimated the republican parties lust for power and control and their desperate efforts to make Bristol's mother appear to be anything more than a lightweight hockey mom that quit as governor. It's a shame they are wrecking this show, just like they did our economy.

From most comments made online it is apparent that a travesty has occurred with the integrity of the show in question. Brandy and Bristol did their best but one had to over perform the other. The show is paying the judges high dollar to make professional judgment but it is clear that their opinion or rating is of no importance whatsoever!. I think it would not be irresponsible to declare bristol as the winner of this season's DWT since it is plain and clear that she riding on scale that really favors her. the disgust of the judges is not fooling me for one minute. if they truly were disappointed with injustice, they should man-up/lady-up and declare they are stepping down. That also goes for the remaining dancers who must be aware by now that the same fate that befell Brandy awaits them whether they out dance Bristol or not.
