Judges decline to use Save as Deandre Brackensick departs the contest

This week, the top 8 performed songs from the 1980s. And, unlike in weeks past, there was a clear division of talent. Some people were amazing. Some failed to live up to ghosts of performances past. And some contestants sounded just too much like previous performances. Phillip Phillips is becoming a notable offender of sounds-the-same syndrome. The big question on this night is: Who will go home? Or will the judges use the Save? I think the real problem at hand is that no one sang a Hall and Oates song. Maybe they're saving that for an entire Hall and Oates-themed week! In my dreams.

Oddly, I think Deandre bought himself a ticket into next week with his DeBarge performance. Even though he went first, Jennifer made sure to continue mentioning his performance and how good he's getting. Now that Heejun is gone, she has to focus on preserving Deandre for as long as possible.

Hollie was in the bottom two last week, and her performance of the song from "Flashdance" was arguably one of the worst this week. It seems like the viewers aren't sure what to make of Elise yet, and her off-kilter performance of "I Want to Know What Love Is" by Foreigner may not help. I arbitrarily chose Joshua in my predictions to round out the bottom three. But after further consideration, I think Phillip Phillips could spend a little time in the bottom, just to get a quick feel for it. We'll see what the all-knowing, all-seeing Jimmy Iovine has to say.

Ryan stops the show mid-filler to ask Joshua how he's feeling. He's lightheaded and sick! Joshua, you can't pass out on us! "Live TV -- anything can happen!" Ryan would say. But before anything happens, a world-premiere Jennifer Lopez video. She describes it as "fun" and "dancy." Ryan asks Jennifer about chemistry with any of the dancers, and she giggles like a little girl. It was actually quite endearing. Then she tells us the song has a "great message" -- one that I will be searching for among the shots of a diamond dust-covered J. Lo. The video preview ends with a "to be continued," as though it had any plot whatsoever.

Oh, the contestants "went on a little scavenger hunt," only to find a terrible Ford Music Video premise! They look tired and bored in the video. These are not the attitudes that sell cars, kids.

To make Joshua feel better (how?), Ryan shows a Twitvid of some preschoolers in Vietnam wishing him luck. They're delivering results in pairs on this night -- a great move. Jessica and Joshua move to the center first. I can only assume they're both safe. Jimmy says Joshua seemed a little over-affected but has reined it in and found his sweet spot. "Tens all around," Jimmy says, bored by this whole thing already. Jimmy says Jessica was great but needs bigger, more powerful songs. Joshua picked a better song than Jessica this week, in Jimmy's opinion. Oh, phooey. Joshua is safe, so he can go back to feeling sick on the couch. Jessica is also safe. Well, isn't that nice!

The Wanted are here to sing "Glad You Came," which sounds like something Jennifer Lopez would like to sample. If only it featured Pitbull. Tommy Hilfiger clearly wasn't around to intervene with the Wanted and all that gray in their wardrobe. These guys look bored, too. One of them tiredly ground against Jennifer. Then they sauntered back to the mainstage. Bring back Lauren Alaina!

"Did you go to first base with Jen?" Ryan asks that one guy, once he mistakenly thought his microphone was off. Such a creep.

Next up: Skylar and Colton. I'm guessing they are both safe, too? Jimmy is glad Skylar didn't sing "9 to 5" and is convinced that Skylar, too, is a power singer. Jimmy says Colton was good but not great. Well, whatever. I'm sure Colton's fine. Ryan brings up Hollie and Deandre to the center of the stage, probably because they are both in the bottom three? We revisit Hollie's performance first, which Jimmy says "wasn't even a great high school performance." Jimmy thinks Hollie will be "fighting with Deandre for who's packing." Jimmy does not give a %*#&. Jimmy insists that, "No! ... Deandre was not great! ... Deandre is growing marginally." Oh, I just love Jimmy.

Dim the lights. Deandre is in the bottom three. Colton is safe. Skylar is safe, and Hollie is in the bottom three. Jimmy is at the top of his game!

Next, Kellie Pickler sings her new country hit, "Where's Tammy Wynette?" She looks less bored than everyone else on this night, myself included. In a classic, returning country "Idol" move, Kellie sits herself between two boys on the results couch. She didn't linger like Lauren Alaina did, because she's a bit more seasoned. She knows when her time on the couch is up. After her performance, Kellie declares that "everyone on this season gon' get a record deal!" If you say so, Pollyanna!

Phillip and Elise are up next. Jimmy says there are three versions of yourself, and this was Phillip's "good version" of himself. It was safe and not great. He can't stop progressing in this competition or he'll stall out. As for Elise, she was "not incredible" on stage. It's "an old-fashioned choke," Jimmy declares. OK. Ryan asks Phillip if he's worried about complacency and Phillip says, "Naw, man. I'm just bein' myself." He's adorable.

Elise is in the bottom three. Phillip is safe. That's a lot of pleats on that skirt. Ryan reveals that Hollie is safe and can go back to the couches. So it will be Elise or Deandre. I hope it's Deandre, and then we don't have to think about the Save.

Jennifer and Randy feel "half and half" that America got one person right in the bottom. And the journey could end for ... Deandre. Deandre's family just loses it, and someone in the audience shrieks, "What!?" Oh, don't be so surprised, little girl. Deandre tells his sister to stop crying then launches into a performance of "Master Blaster." A poor choice for his final song, but maybe he knows he isn't worth the Save.

It was good for a performance under duress -- outstanding, really, given his family's emotional state. The audience is chanting, "Save! Save! Save!" But they'll get over it. Jennifer says Deandre is an amazing performer who has a lot to show the world, but she only gets one vote so Deandre is eliminated. "What!?" the person in the audience goes again. Oh, my god. Someone is going to start a riot.

Jam on, Deandre!

What do you think of Thursday night's results? Did American and the judges get it right?

"American Idol" airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.

Someone please explain why they plot against a great singer like Hollie. In fact they keep giving out bum advice and getting people voted off.

I think LOPEZ has got to go! SHE'S ANNOYING. Her videos are like finger nails on a chalk board! Her self-promoting is interferring with show. She said her song had a message. WHAT A DISGRACE! I hope she wasn't talking to my children with her sleeze. Go back to the ghetto where you belong!

Glad to see Deandre go, I found his over the top use of the falsetto to be annoying as hell. It made me cringe. Hollie is a good singer but she was off key several times the judges were right about that. Jessica has an amazing talent, Phillip is unique and brings something different to the table.

I do not understand WHY the judges eagerly trash Hollie EVERY week and EVERY performance.  This girl is 15 years old and a fantastic singer.  I'm glad I am not in the music industry because these judges are obviously hearing something I am not.  I guessed Hollie to WIN American Idol back when she tried out.  They loved her then!  Hollie has been given the ugly stick by the judges and I am trying to figure out why.  Maybe because she is so young and talented that the judges are terribly jealous!  Come on Steven Tyler, you were'nt any good singing the Star Spangled Banner and NOW you are telling Hollie she is "pitchy"?  Give me a break.  On the other hand, give Hollie a break.

Ok...I'm sick of the love fest on Idol. These singers are good but far from the greatest thing that ever hit a stage. J-Lo is pretty but has to go. The "goosies" and tears are just stupid. This has become a major love fest and Idol maybe has jumped the shark. Take the word "beautiful" away from Tyler and he won't have anything at all to say. These judges are just terrible. They obviously have their favorites and it probably sways the votes. Give them an ethnic, yodelling screamer and they go mushy in love with the exagerated performer and give them a standing"O." Sickening and after all it's getting really boring. Jimmy is the only level head in the place.

This guy shouldn't have got through the first round. I don't like Kelly's new song. I think she is fading out fast. Just goes to show that you don't have to win to become famous (for 15 minutes). I really don't see or hear what the judges do most of the time. I wish that Simon was back, I feel that the show has went downhill since he left.

The audience got it right by putting Dean-dreds into the bottom three and the judges got it right by not using their save. A little falsetto goes a long way. We didn't even watch the results show because it is usually such a  yawn. I take it that this week was no better. It's too bad that Jimmy is not one of the judges. He is more insightful than all three of the judges put together.

This was predictable, Hollie, Deandre, and Elise.  the surprise was Hollie being safe.  Elise is not appealing to America & Judges or Hollie is too much of a favorite to boot right now.  Deandre had to go.  Agreed his falsetto was used too much and too high.  When you close your eyes to listen to these competitors and hear their voices you can predict who is going to get booted.  Taking the visual out gives you a better ear.

Good show with Lopez trying to use the save.  That was not going to happen.

Too many other talents on the show and Steven and Randy know it.  Overall the show has become predictable and these competitors need to watch the advice given to them on song choice.  Well, Phillips is just to headstrong to be led into anything but himself.    Thumbs up

Thank God Deandre is gone!  His annoying girly falsetto was almost criminal.  And his hair, well, that was girly too.  Looked like a white girl that went mad with a crimping iron.

Jimmy and America got it right last night.  Amazed that Brackensick hung around as long as he did.  Loved the Phillips comment about not touching hands.  Wish they would also get rid of the staged hand wavers in front.

I am glad Deandre is gone. He sings like a girl. Didn't like him.
Somehow I like the last years line up but not this one. Judges ..... I felt all the time over praise for no reason especially for some of their favorites. Lopez ... you are full of it.

Watching the recaps of last night's performances I really don't get why they gushed over Phillip Phillips.  He was so far off pitch you could barely recognize the song.  His high notes were flat and overall the performance was cringe-worthy.  But the judges promote him, so he stays.

On the other hand, Hollie didn't sing one note off key and she was publically flogged for supposedly being off tune.  Watching the recap I was right the first time. NOT off tune one bit. But their public humiliation of her put her in the bottom 3.  Good job judges!

Elise did a great job last week but not so much this week.  And that attitude!  Wouldn't mind her leaving and taking her attitude with her.

Joshua-oversings every single time.  Would be great if he could rein it in.

Skylar-she's one to watch.  Best perfomance of the night last night.

Jessica-Another great talent

Colton-Meh, teenybopper's dream, BUTthe judges love him, so............

Sad to see Deandre go.  His biggest error was over-using his falsetto when he had so much more. Loved watching him perform. Great voice, such a good attitude, and yup, he's gone. Won't quite be the same without him.

How it should have been.  I will admit that I think that was the best he sang on Wednesday BUT that should tell you that he just did not have what it takes to win.  Lots of good ones left.  Be interesting.

Hey Bubba....Never said D wouldn't make it.  I personally don't like him.  But he may be good in his line of music.   He's just not what the MAJORITY of AMERICANS listen to.  This is about who has enough talent to sell the most records.  More people buy Country, Rock & Rap so the winner always comes from one of those 3 music genres.

Colton & Elise do have talent but they're not bringing the whole package which is going to hurt them.  So...I think we sort of agree on most things.

I think Jimmy would make a good judge as well. He's got the credentials and he's not afraid to tell it like it is. I liked the combination of the judges last year, but this year it's just not the same. (Well the redundant comments are!)

Yes they got it right for a change. He never should have been in the top 12 in the first place. He sounds like a girl, not DeBarge!!!! It was obvious that Jennifer wanted to save him, but was overruled. Thank goodness for Randy & Steven.
Jennifer just babbles on and on like Paula used to due when she was high.
Joshua has got to go, every time he sings it's like watching a gospel show. Very annoying.
Will be interesting to see who is in the top 2/3.

WTH? Typed a comment and now it's gone, Didn't post- D@ MMIT!!!

Anyway, BYE BYE DeAndre' Not nice knowing ya!!!  His stupid bouncing dance and that hair- UGH. So glad they didn't use the save on him, thought they were going to and I would have cringed.

Kelly Pickler is pretty darn HOT, I am a straight female but dang is she attractive in all ways, She sings good, great personality, and a natural beauty IMO. Colton was blushing alot when she sat by him- kinda cute Embarrassed

Why was the video of Jennifer to be continued...that is so dumb. Who cares anyway...was there a big ending where we have to see her and her boy toy going at it and they couldn't show that on Idol Sick

The judges are the most boring thing, this season and last. None of them will tell the truth to the contestants, they are all just so wonderful; and if they do try and say it, it is like they are apologizing when they do. This is a tough business and the singers need to hear what is really going on. Only Jimmy is saying anything. At least Deandre is gone now though and I don't have to listen to his annoying constant use of falsetto.
