Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani take home the Mirrorball Trophy

We have our champions: Melissa and Tony! There was so much bleeping after Tom announced their names! I don't even know who it was shouting obscenities -- maybe Joey Fatone? -- but he was shouting with joy. Everyone onstage went absolutely insane: Melissa was actually crowd surfing. It was so great to see her take home the Mirrorball Trophy after missing so narrowly a few seasons back.

Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough were the runners-up. Derek talked about how much Shawn had inspired him over the season and how she'd even made him believe in himself again.


Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy came in third. Kelly called Val "the most incredible man and dancer out there." Tom pointed out that the crowd was on its feet for Kelly.

In the final round, Kelly danced a jive that was nearly flawless. Carrie Ann quipped, "There was one little slip, and I think that was due to body oil" (Score: 28.5/30). Melissa performed a samba that somehow made booty-shaking look tasteful, but had some trouble with the song. This dance wasn't actually bad, it was just the first sour note Melissa has hit in weeks (Score: 28.5/30). Shawn danced a jaunty cha-cha that brought down the house. Bruno told Shawn she was going out with a bang (Score: 30/30)


"Dancing With the Stars" will return in the spring.

I thought Kelly should have won again.  She can really dance.  This was fixed.  They had to give it to someone else since she already won 1 time.

I loved Shawn and Derek and feel that Derek will become on of this countries best choreographers. However this is a ballroom dancing competition and sometimes Derek broke the rules and while the dances were amazing, make them amazing within the rules. Tony and Melissa did and that is why they deserved to win. Melissa danced ballroom in a ballroom competition. If Derek and Shawn were on "So you think you can dance" I'd say they should have won.

You do know it is a show not a true contest, The best dancer that has never won a trophy. Is the one that won. It was obvious many weeks ago.

I agree with Harry766  The show is supposed to be "DANCING WITH THE STARS". In what way is Melissa considered a STAR.

Will not be watching the show.

I was in shock all season how mean and anti-Derek Len Goodman was the entire time.  I don't know if he feels intimated by Derek or what.  Derek is hands down the most creative dancer and choreographer the show has ever had.  I do understand why he is leaving - the judges will never let him win again with their deliberate bad scoring.  I am not sure why when Kelly had a mess up and Melissa wasn't with the music they received 9.5 from the judges.  I would have given them 8s.  Now that said, I do actually love Melissa and I think that she and Tony are as nice of people as Shawn and Derek.  Kelly and Val, thank goodness didn't win.  Should not even have been in third.  I got so tired of seeing his ugly body and hearing him talk about her big boobs and they really acted snobby and above everyone.  Not winners.  Shawn did an amazing job of keeping up with Derek.  Anyway, just watched my last season.  When they have Duds like Bristol on the show it is time to distance myself.  I just can't take thea buse Len dished out to Derek.  Glad Derek is getting away from it.  As for the brothers stabbing at Derek, that has to be nothing less than jelousy.  They are not particularly good dancers and try to win votes with their strip routines.  Yuk.  The show should be on after hours instead of prime time if they are going to allow such nastiness.  So good Dancing With The Stars.

Although I personally preferred Shawn and Derek, who were amazing, entertaining and creative, I also liked Melissa and Tony, who have a long and elegant look to all their movements.  Kelly is to be admired because, as she admitted herself, she did not start out as a great dancer but worked very hard to become one. All contests are subject to the whims of the public---look at how the Oscars are awarded. Sentiments like "It is finally their turn" can and do trump merit. The stars participating have to be prepared for this, and so do we the viewing public. Even our national elections are essentially popularity contests. 
I do feel that DWTS will have a hard time if they return with their regular format in the spring. We became used to a very high caliber of dancing, and it could be boring in the first rounds. We'll see.

To those who are Melissa haters, too bad, but get used to it because chances are she will be back on DWTS next seasson as co host with Tom Bergeron with Brooke leaving because of her cancer situation......I said right in the beginning that Shawn and Melissa would be in the finals and while Shawn was fantastic,Derek did incorporate to her strength with the gymnastics......Meli​ssa was pure dance with great lines and moves and her improvement and drive week after week was a joy to see....Plus Tony Davaloni has been on the show since day one and this was his first win and it was well deserved with a great partner.....As for Derek leaving the show, it is mainly because he needs to have some serious neck surgery and it may be too soon for him to come back next season.......This was a terrific season all around regardless of who you did, or didn't like, the entertainment value was very high and the dancing was some of the best in 14 seasons.

I liked the whole season of dances.  BUT I feel most of the time it is a popularity contest.   If not, then why did Bristol and Kirstie stay on so long when Helio and Gilles were far far the better dancers.   To elimiate them before B. & K. told me that popularity with fans is more important than dancing.   I think the judges should have 3/4 of the votes counted and the public 1/4--might eliminate the difference and concentrate on the dancing, which is the main object of the program.  And I agree that Shawn had just too much gymnastics incorporated into her dances.   I read where Derek is leaving, why I wonder.   He is the best dancer of them all.  I will certainly miss him.   Otherwise Melissa and Tony were great.    Looking forward to next session.

I am so glad Melissa and Tony won.  I thought they did an exceptional job all season.  They both seem like good down-to-earth people worthy of the win.  Congratulations.  It was a great season.

The show is rigged.  Melissa never won the trophy, so they gave it to her.  She didn't deserve to win.  I will not be watching this show again.

Now this was dancing.  None of the freak political correctness side show we see in regular DWTS seasons.  These were dancers which is what the show is NAMED ABOUT.

So sorry that Melissa won.  Cannot  stand this wannabe.  Dumped on National TV made her a
"celebrity".  Most of the people on DWTS you have never heard of.  How does being an ex-fiancee
of The Bachelor qualify her to be called a celebrity.  Maybe she will just go away now.  She had her 15 minutes of fame.

Enjoyed the show a lot!   I liked all of the contestants, but Shawn and Derek were my favorites. Wish they had won the mirrorball.  I will be watching again in the Spring.

I agree with daz55. Shawn did incorporate alot of gymnast moves and of course thats where she is more comfortable. But Meliissa incorporated skill, class, elegance and glamour.  She always has a smile on her face.  And to stigirl1967 Bristol Palin is noit a star either and doesn't have any talent.  The only reason she wa selected is because of her ties with the Tea Party Queen.  I am so happy that she was eliminated and the only reason she made it to the finals last time is because of the Tea Party votes.  I hope never to see her again.  Hooray for Melissa and Tony.

I personally preferred Kelly's style of dancing. Sometimes to me Melissa is a little stiff with the latin dances and Shawn relies too heavily on gymnastics. But there was no controversy - no ringer, no fan fave with two left feet - all three earned their place in the finals and  brought something unique to the dancefloor, and I would have been happy regardless who won out of those three.

Why do the Chmerkovsky brothers seem supremely happy that Tony and Melissa won??? I mean extra extra happy? Could it be a dig at Derek?

Ok, the guy in the green shirt...  Just what is he reaching for?  Her body is all contorted.  Weird.  Under his hand, are those her ribs, hips, what is that?  Something is weird in that photo.

       Well to start out, the photo on the Msn cover of this story is not Melissa and Tony, but that of Kelly and Val so I think the Msn team needs to hire someone who at least has knowledge of what he/she is writing about. Melissa and Tony ! WOW, I am so happy to se her finally win her a trophy ball, and her dance's were amazing. so too you haters out there that feel the need to comment on her boob size or her body, I think you should look into the mirror and take a long hard look at what other people see you as, you want to judge someone; judge yourself fist and then decide to keep your mouth quiet on the neg comments to others.
