Veteran TV presenter Tom Bergeron was one of the first people to learn about Brooke Burke Charvet's cancer diagnosis after she turned to her former "Dancing With the Stars" co-host for support months ago. The actress-turned-reality TV star went public with her thyroid cancer battle in a video blog post on Thursday, revealing she is set to undergo surgery but remains confident for a full recovery.

She told fans, "I'm going to have a nice big scar right her across my neck. And I don't get to just walk around and pretend like nothing happened or not follow up or not share it, because it's going to be pretty much dead center ... As crazy as it is, my head is in the right place, and it's going to be good. I'm just going to make a positive out of this negative thing. Now I'm ready to deal with it and I'm going to be fine ... I feel really, really strong."

The news came as a surprise for Burke Charvet's fans, but Bergeron has revealed he had weeks to digest the shock revelation as she had confided in him some time ago. During an appearance on "The Talk" on Thursday, he said, "I've known about this for a few months, and I told her at the time she first told me that I had experience with this in my family. You never want to hear the word cancer, but thyroid cancer is one of the most treatable cancers; (it) has an incredibly high success rate and also, even the scarring aspect... doesn't necessarily have to be that visible." Turning to the camera to address Burke Charvet directly, he said, "My love and support are with you," before telling the show's co-hosts, "We're all right there with her."

"Dancing With the Stars" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT and Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

I just had the surgery myself to remove my thyroid because I had nodules on both sides.  They couldn't determine 100% if they were cancerous or not so it was best I have it removed.  They weren't cancerous so I was blessed there.  My mom had thyroid cancer and had her thyroid removed and came out of it cancer free and you couldn't even tell she had the surgery.  I just had the surgery a month ago so my scar is still visible but everyone says that it is healing fine and will be right where you can not see it.  I know Brook will come through this fine and no body will ever be the wiser once all is healed.

There are methods of thyroid surgery that don't involve leaving a noticeable scar. My ENT surgeon went through a fold in my neck for mine. Thyroid surgery also can be done with the Da Vinci method where a robotic arm goes up through the armpit, and the surgeons manipluates the arm to do the surgery.
