Discovery cancels 'American Guns'

Network says move not in response to recent events, sparks online debate

By Kenny Herzog Dec 18, 2012 9:20AM
Major networks have often delayed or outright canceled content in the wake of national tragedy that might be deemed insensitive or inappropriate. So it was no surprise that, following the shootings in Newtown last Friday, ABC briefly pulled the violent "Scandal" finale from its website, FOX pushed back episodes of "Family Guy" and "American Dad" that featured either violence or religious satire, and Showtime aired a special disclaimer prior to this past Sunday's explosive "Homeland." However strategic their motivations, these were all the right and respectful decisions.

And now, FOX News is reporting that Discovery has opted not to renew reality series "American Guns" -- which depicts the overlapping business and family lives of former Alma, Colo., police chief-turned-gun-shop owner Richard Wyatt, his wife Renne and her teenage children, Kurt and Paige -- for a third season, despite growing ratings.

Discovery denies any direct connection to the shootings in Newtown and only confirmed to FOX News that production has indeed ceased and no more episodes have been ordered. It's hard to blame the network reps remaining apolitical about the move, but even more difficult to ignore the PR nightmare that would have shadowed the series' return.

Even if Discovery's neutral stance reflects the truth, and "American Guns" was nixed before the tragedy in Newtown, the network will likely absorb some collateral criticism from this divisive topic. Since the cancellation was announced, viewers have besieged the "Guns" Facebook page. One user, F Houston Smith, sounded off: "You folks at the Discovery Channel are spineless for caving in to political correctness. Shame on You!" Mark Angel, another Facebook user, posted: "Discovery I will no longer watch any of your shows due to your political agenda."

Do you think Discovery canceled "American Guns" as a result of public sentiment following the tragic events in Newtown, and if so, do you agree with the decision? Let us know (and please be respectful of those directly impacted by the shootings) in the comments below.

I truly weep for the lives lost in the tragedy at Newton, but I do not think that cancelling one or two reality shows is the answer to the problem.  I have never seen this show, but it sounds as though the family has  the proper respect, knowledge, and know how to provide this type of entertainment unlike many television shows and movies today.

Discovery is getting to be like The History Channel where we watch 37 episodes of Paswn Stars every night of the week. Reruns are the thing these days. Discovery used to have educational and informative shows everyday and I can remember when my kids watched as a School assignment and had to report on what they got out of the program. Not so anymore.

Lets change the name of the network to "Spineless" instead of Discovery.

some great comments on here, we are all tired of the knee jerk reactions of liberal tv shows.

All mass shooting in recent years have a direct relationship to psycotic drugs, so lets ban them.

These video games that are extremey realistic are changing the "norm" for some children.

Lots of parents find it easier to buy the kid a game, than take them to the park or lake.  This is the breakdown of the family unit.

Yeah let's cancel a show that educates people about weapons.  This show teaches the history behind guns and the proper practices of modern day weapon use.

Why not cancel this show? It reflects the wrong image of the American Family nowadays. It depicts the following unforgiveable sins: 1) Two Parents (one of each gender) 2) Everyone works for a living. 3) Nobody is smoking legalized dope. 4) No violence or sexually explicit scenes. 5) The children don't dress entirely in black like funeral directors or Halloween characters. 6) Nobody spends the whole day vegging out on the couch with an XBox.  7)  Nobody wears upside down crosses and looks like human pin cushions.   Worst example possible to show on TV.

This makes sense, take American Guns (which appeals to gun enthuses) off but promote even greater violence with  blood and gore Video games in commercials, yep! At least in American Guns they teach safety and handling of firearms while "Call to Arms", "GTA", "Gods of War" etc...teaches how to KILL with extreme violence, they're are all about KILLING!!!!!!!!!! and they are directed at children and younger adults (and don't say they can't be sold to under age kids, they get them!!!!). Hell, reality TV is nothing more than conflict, bulling and violence but of course they'd (the liberal anti-gun nuts) like to misdirect everything to "Gun Control"...what a bunch of delusional crap!!!!!!!

I find it ironic that we, as Americans, have gone so far away from personal responsibility for our own actions. We blame everyone else for the things that we do. I have never understood the whole “the TV show made me do it” argument. For argument sake, let’s say a TV show or video game does have an influence on our actions. Let’s say American Guns somehow made this guy go into a school and kill those kids. And let’s say the gunman lived through it. Would Rich Wyatt or his family be held responsible? Or would the gunman be the one going to jail for the rest of his life or get the death penalty? And the answer is: The gunman would go to jail. And why is that? Because he is the one responsible, period, end of story. We are responsible for our own actions, per the law. That is how it should be.

Some may say American Guns was boring to watch. So be it. It is their opinion. Some people liked watching the show and if I have heard correctly, ratings were improving.  Some people complain that the wife and daughter were just eye candy. Can anyone honestly tell me that shows like the Jersey Shore DON’T have a ton of that? That the Kardashian conglomerate of shows are “good television”? Come on. TV is full of shows based solely on that. That is a lame excuse and everyone knows it.

To say that American Guns was cancelled for any other reason that some political agenda is ridiculous. If people don’t want to watch a show about guns, fine. Turn the channel. If you don’t want to own a gun, fine. Don’t buy one. But why infringe on another citizens right to watch the show or own a gun? For that matter, why limit the type of gun a LAW ABIDING citizen can own? Hypothetically speaking, what if the government goes and does something crazy and does something like, ooohhh, starts martial law and turns on the citizens. Wouldn’t you want to have the ability to have the same rifles the military would be using against you? I know… it is extreme, but don’t act like that has never happened.  (See the Middle East and Germany for references) Some say, “Oh that will never happen here”. Well, we thought that we’d never be attacked on our own soil and how wrong were we on that? (See 9-11).

I guess in the end, we look so much to place blame on someone else, that we forget that we need to be accountable for ourselves. And just because you may not want to own a rifle, don’t begrudge someone else from owning one.

I thought the show American Guns was ok and getting better.  I'm tired of knee jerk politics, whether that is at Discovery channel or in Washington DC.  The problem is not any particular type of weapon.  It is the fear of litigation or personal stigma for saying somebody needs mental help.  Banning assault weapons will only make them use something else.  Look at the recent events in China.  The person in that tragedy killed 20 kids at a school with a knife.  If we apply the same knee jerk problem solving, i guess we should ban whatever type of knife he used.

Removing shows about guns does nothing whatsoever to help or hinder the evil that happened. The subject of guns will not go away becaue a few tv shows are removed or delayed.

After the Vietname War many people thought it would be a good idea to stop giving little boys combat toys and guns in particular.  The little boys I knew, including my own, used sticks when guns were not provided,

My favorite example is a Christmas story where one of my 6 year old  shepherds got bored and began to pretend to shoot out the church lighting with his shepherds crook, with full sound effects.

Do not take drastic measures against gun owners. Leave our constitutional right to defend ourselves intact. But most importantly help our mentally ill and their families. Encourage research and assistance in that area.  My heart goes out to all the familes.

American Guns was NOT in the least violent but the advertising of violent video games and violent movie previews that appear on DSC are violent.  American Chopper was more violent than AG.  AG was about a loving family that shared the same interests, unlike so many other shows on TV, like Jaesey Shores and the stupid Honey Boo Boo, ridiculous crap!  To DSC it is all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and nothing more.  I am boycotting DSC and I will be writting to their advertisers to let them know I will not be buying their products.  It is a kneejerk reaction to an unfortunate incident and DSC does not deserve my attention from here on out.

It doesn't matter why the station decided to drop the show, whether political or just as they said, they cancelled it before the school shooting. We have a deeper need to confront than one show being dismissed from our lives. We as a society need to take more responsibility for our actions, be held accountable, and more mindful of others. There needs to be a fundamental change in how we view ourselves if we are to regain our former stature. This tragedy should not be repeated, but I fear it will, unless we change our attitudes and how our society runs.

We will miss all of you who have left us before your time.

I am not a fan of these shows but do watch Top Shot whenever it is on. However the networks are not doing this out of respect for the victims but only because they fear a decrease in revenues if they continue with these shows.  Hollywood and the TV networks are only run by ratings and money and their decisions only reflect that.  They don't care about anything else.  These are the same people who make and distribute violent movies  and then want to blame the gun culture and pull shows that people who are responsible gun owners want to watch.

Ummm.....is it possible Discovery dropped this show because it was BORING???

Don't forget, there's another gun shop show on Discovery, "Sons of Guns" and there hasn't been an cancellation announcement about that one, has there?  I watched the entire last season of this show, although I don't know why... and it was a snooze fest!   Every time they'd show Rich Wyatt trying to make a deal to buy or sell some weapons, he ALWAYS came off like a sleezy used car salesman.   His wife, Renee and daughter, Paige, seemed to be relegated to providing a little T&A, and the son, Kurt always acted like he'd prefer to be somewhere else.   They tried adding an element of comic relief by focusing on the goffy gunsmiths they keep in the basement, but it didn't help.   THE SHOW WAS DULL!!!!   By comparison, the folks down in LA at Redjacket are a lot more interesting.   Nuff said!

Once again, the goobers in Washington turn a heartbreaking tragedy into an opportunity to punish the wrong people. Thousands of honest, law abiding citizens enjoy using "assault style" weapons for target practice and NEVER use them to commit a crime. The whole purpose of target practice is to hit a specific area with a bullet. Having the ability to send multiple rounds down range (at a non organic target) without having to stop and reload gives the shooter more practice time. No one's there to practice reloading. That can be done without firing a shot. The enjoyment and purpose is to hone skills as a marksmen.

Criminals and insane people could care less about new gun control laws. They don't pay attention to the existing laws anyway. Any new law will effect only law abiding citizens.

There is no doubt that parents need to do a better job teaching responsibility. However, you are what you eat... our children, and the rest of us, are awash in immensly violent content most of the time. A movie doesn't get ratings unless there is a significant body count. De-sensitization is a real phenomena and people want to talk about programming and what the government wants? Don't miss what might be right in front of you because you happen to like it... The U.S. is the world's police force, and maybe they are trying to condition us to overcome the normal human resistance to killing another human.

Good riddance!  Aside from the show  "'Top Shot", which was somewhat entertaining even though very choreographed, these gun related shows on a couple of different networks are absolute junk!Blowing up things like school kids and zombies, etc., can only appeal to those with IQ's < 50.

Discovery has made the worst decision that any television network could ever make!   AG was a great show, getting better all the time! I hope that one of the other networks is able to pick up the show, as I know it has a huge following. The Wyatt family deserves another chance. It's hard to believe that Discovery had the intelligence to develop the show in first place, only to throw it under the bus now. You seriously thought that out of all the shows in your line-up, American Guns was the one you should cut!?

This will be remembered as one of the poorest business decisions ever made by a network. In my eyes, your quality and reputation just took a big fall.  It was nice seeing you.
