Victoria Principal skips J.R. Ewing's funeral

But is a 'Dallas' return still possible?

By Corey Levitan Feb 12, 2013 3:41PM

The J.R. Ewing funeral episode of "Dallas" has wrapped and will air on Monday, March 11. But J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman) cannot truly be laid to rest if the question of what happened to Pamela Barnes (Victoria Principal) is not.

Bing: More about Victoria Principal | "Dallas"

According to all Internet accounts, the funeral guest list included Lucy Ewing (Charlene Tilton), J.R. mistress Mandy Winger (Deborah Shelton), second J.R. wife Cally (Cathy Podewell), Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford) and Ray Krebbs (Steve Kanaly).

Wait, do you hear that? It's the sound of the bottom of a Ewing oil barrel being scraped. So what in tarnation more important was Victoria Principal doing that she couldn't attend?

Principal left the show in 1987, saying that she wanted to pursue other roles. (None of them raised her acting profile.) Producers subjected her character to a disfiguring car accident. After that, Pamela divorced Bobby (for the second time) and disappeared, but not before viewers learned that she was suffering from a terminal disease that gave her only a year to live.

Pamela's death was never mentioned on either the CBS or TNT versions of "Dallas," however, ostensibly because producers have always held out hope that it didn't occur and Principal could be lured away from selling wrinkle cream on QVC. (Although she appeared in a 2004 CBS retrospective called "Dallas Reunion: The Return to Southfork," Principal quit acting in 2001.)

Some still hold that hope out -- particularly the 2,607 fans of the "Come Back to Dallas, Victoria Principal" page. But now is probably that hope's last window. Because with J.R. gone, it's doubtful that Bobby (Patrick Duffy), Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) and Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval) alone can generate enough original Ewing energy to keep the series flowing after this season.

With a new "Who Shot J.R.?" plot arc brewing, could it end up being Pamela's hands on the smoking gun? (Maybe that's why, if the reports are true, she didn't attend the funeral.) It would be the best-kept secret in television.

What do you think the chances are?

"Dallas" airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TNT.

From a plot standpoint, Pamela wouldn't come back for JR's funeral. She hated JR and she's been gone for years...why would her charachter want to come back for the funeral?

It is unlikely she will come back. Victoria Principal has acted in years and has done very well for herself. Respectfully she owes us nothing and if she did return would fans tolerate her only being there for an episode or two or possibly even another actress playing Pam. The world has changed a lot since the glory days of the original series. For those claiming this is the final season, the ratings are still good for a cable show. Unless the bottom falls out after the death of J.R., then the numbers are high enough for third season. The 3rd season I think is going to happen but that is where it will get interesting.

I think the new Dallas is very close to the old one. The characters still hold their appeal. Cynthia Cedre is very talented. The problem is that younger people of today are very different than 30 years ago. I have a video store and the movies that come out are mostly crap. There's very little thinking going on and you have to pay full attention to shows with many turns in it. It will make it if people know about it. Nashville is doing well and its the same type of show.

Dallas is by far my all time favorite show. I could never get into the ones that followed like Falcon Crest or Dynesty. The closest show that I ever found was Dirty Sexy Money but it didn't make the cut. Dallas always had an interesting cast of characters with new spins. I liked Pamela's role but when I saw Victoria in a interview it was very disappointing. She comes across as very stuffy and insincere. The Gibb family to this day blames her for the death of Andy. She looks like crap because she was and maybe still is a drug addict. She did a great job in that role but the real Victoria is a let down.

I loved Dallas I never missed it ! I  loved it so much that my father in law took me to see the house used in the show . I loved watching Larry Hagman he was a great bad guy and the new Dallas won't be the same without him! And yes   has had work done and she looks like  crap putting it nicely I hope she didn't pay this doctor for his work!

It will surprise me if they have enough money to lure her back....she is a very, very wealthy woman now with her investments and cosmetic line.......she doesn't need to work. Her net worth is now $200 + million....if she does show her face it will be nice though----likely not.

Take it from a hard core original Dallas fan ... Pamela Ewing is as gone, as is JR Ewing.  Could it be the character Kristin Shepard (Mary Crosby) who will return to finish the job, killing JR.  She surely would have been out of jail by now??  As for a 3rd season for Dallas .... ratings say no way.

Let it die..Dallas wasn't THAT good ...just a decent soap opera with a good budget.

The new show isn't anywhere near as good as the original. It doesn't have enough history even though it has some of the actors who made the original great and kept you in suspense until the next episode.

R.I.P. Larry Hagman you sure gave us splendid entertainment in both:) As far as Victoria (Pamela)'s return I don't think it will happen and if it does it will be a short lived boost for the current "DALLAS"

I watched the original Dallas and the new one! Both are good if you are a true fan! So sorry that Larry Hagman passed may he rest in peace!

Chances are slim to none...but frankly the new version of Dallas is awful.  The younger generation sucks....nothing left to keep anyone interested in watching the show now.  and BTW - I live in Dallas......

Who cares I didn't like the series then and never watched it this time. There all a bunch of old actress and actor and are all washed up.Go retire and enjoy what left of your life,Dallas is history, gone, let it rest and be done with.

I think she's an a-hole.  In real life & vetual life.  I don't want to see her again.
Feb 13, 2013 10:42AM
She's got the 'Michael Jackson' nose, hmmm??
Feb 13, 2013 10:37AM
Listen, Victoria does not care a wit about the new DALLAS. She doesn't need it.
Feb 13, 2013 10:37AM

I agree that the original cast members cannot sustain the show but I also think the writers have done a fabulous job with the new generation of Ewings  The show has been exposive from the start and even though JR made the show I think they have done well preparing for his demisej.  T
