'General Hospital' Stays, 'The Revolution' Goes

Soap fans and stars celebrate the news on Twitter, 'GMA' to expand

Soap opera fans have been targeting "The Revolution" as a means to save "General Hospital," and even Katie Couric took a stand against having that show as a lead-in for her upcoming ABC talk show, launching this fall. Now, it looks like they're getting what they wanted. Word comes that "General Hospital" will stick around and "Good Morning America" will launch an afternoon summer show, while "The Revolution" is getting the proverbial ax. Needless to say, "General Hospital" fans and stars are doing the happy dance on Twitter.

Since "The Revolution" took over the "One Life to Live" time slot, the transformational talk show hasn't managed to build a following. Soap fans feared ABC would stick by the show, in spite of its paltry ratings, and cancel "General Hospital," but MSN TV has confirmed the big news broken by Deadline.

"The Revolution" will go off the air the first week of July. And then, on July 9, "GMA" will continue its campaign to take down "Today" by launching a summer series, currently titled "GMA in the Afternoon." The new show will be lighter in fare than its namesake and will feature members of the "GMA" morning crew, as well as some new faces, according to Deadline.

The idea seems to be that "GMA in the Afternoon" will serve as temporary filler, until "Kate" premieres Sept. 10. But if it performs, it's hard to believe ABC will let it go.

The "General Hospital" Twitter Party

In the meantime, "General Hospital" is safe and will survive to see its 50th anniversary next April, which has fans and castmembers spinning on Twitter. Here are a few of the posts:

Maurice Benard: "I just heard we're going to keep going. What can you say about Frank, Ron, the crew and everybody at General Hospital? Im just so damn proud" and "I also wanna thank the audience, which means the fans, for turning this around because the bottom line is ratings"

Laura Wright: "Wooo hooo Hell Yeah!!! GH Stays!!!! Thanks so much to @valentinifrank @carlivatiron. And all the fans!!!!! #GH rocks!"

Steve Burton: "Much luv to the fans for keeping #GH Alive. Congrats to all."

Nancy Lee Grahan: "One year renewal! Thank you ABC, GH fans, and @valentinifrank and @carlivatiron. What a difference! Upward! ... @MauriceBenardMB we left too early today. They're all whooping it up on set right now! xoxo"

Bradford Anderson: "Congrats to all! And thanks to our incredible viewers!!"

"One Life to Live" veteran Farah Fath may have put it best: "ABC cancels OLTL replacement The Revulsion. mm-hmm... It's hard to even muster up an 'We told you so.' smh. #DUHHHH!!!!!! Congrats to General Hospital cast and crew! A soap renewal in 2012 is nothing short of victorious."

"General Hospital" and "The Revolution" air weekdays on ABC.

Well, well ABC is renewing GH for another year and canceling the Revolution. Looks like the fan boycott worked. I'm very happy for the cast and crew at GH. it has to be a big relief for them to know their jobs are safe for at least another year. And as a long time GH fan I am absolutely thrilled. GH rules!

I am so glad as most are about keeping General Hospital I am still not over them getting rid of All my Children and One life to live I have watched these shows for years. If ABC wants to keep it's programming with audiences they better listen to the public and don't mess with anymore of our soaps!

I am soooo glad they are keeping General Hospital on. I have watch GH since I was 17 years old. It is bad enough they took off All My Children and One Life to Live why are they doing this to us soap opera lover. We really have enough reality shows, leave the shows we have been use to all these years on in the afternoon.  They are all like part of our family.  Congradulations to all the cast and stars of General Hospital you are my one and only favorite soap opera of all time...

EXTREMELY GOOD NEWS!!! It's about time that the executives of ABC woke up and realized that canceling GH would totally sink ABC daytime. I am sure they were not prepared  for or expecting the backlash and boycotts for taking our beloved soaps off of the air. I am 46 and have watched AMC, OLTL & GH as far back as my memory has of tv watching (since about 5 yrs old). Losing these shows was like having my family all taken away from me suddenly and tragically. I am still in mourning and have not once watched the replacement shows and will not. Not even Katie. I know they will never admit their mistake and bring them back but if they did they would win their daytime audience back. Who needs GMA in the afternoon after several hours in the am, that is enough news. We can watch CNN if we wanted that. PLEASE ABC BRING BACK AMC AND OLTL!!!!

So  tired of all the daytime talk shows. My afternoon choice is B&B, Y&R and GH.

But I do miss Guiding Light.

I want One Life to Live back.  I was a loyal viewer and don't watch ABC daytime anymore.  Get a hint!  We are the viewers and we don't want the garbage you are replacing our much loved stories and actors and actresses with.  ONTL!!!!!!!!!Bring it back!

Do NOT watch  GMA in the Afternoon.  If it does well it will replace GH next year. I am watching GH to up the ratings. ABC thinks they know what is best for us but looks like they were wrong. They should just give it up and put OLTL back on.

Do NOT watch  GMA in the Afternoon.  If it does well it will replace GH next year.   I have started watching "Days" =NBC  and Young and Restless = CBS.  I want to save this genre.  It's all about $$ and these corporate B_____d's could care less about  viewers.  All this other programming is so much cheaper.   I have seen so many fantastic actors doing commercials and not just soap actors.   So very sad.  Thanks  Snooki and all your intellectual friends for putting the degradation of our culture on the fast track!

Thank you Frank Valenti and Ron Carlivati  for a fantastic job on breathing fresh air into GH.

I am a big supporter of soap operas. ABC should have never gotten rid of All My Childrennor One Life to live. I whole heartedly support General Hospital. I am a big fan.

Thank goodness there will be at least one scripted show remaining on daytime on ABC. Sheesh, when I was home from work on Good Friday I found  The Cud and The Regurgitation too annoying to even be on in the background. I hate to sound that cruel but it really is all the rehashed info and segments that is on every other  network.  A little variety in your programming please? Yes, thank you.

Yes!  So glad to hear GH is staying and no offense but the revolution show is leaving.  Boycotting still pays off!  :)

Thank you ABC for keeping the faith with General Hospital.  I would have hated to give up my ABC primetime shows.   Tim Gunn I'm sorry, I adore you, but you need to be on Project Runway.

Now BRING BACK OLTL  and once again my world will be A OK.

It's about time ABC made a smart decision regarding their daytime shows! I'm surprised that canceling All My Children and One Life to Live didn't kill ABC daytime. Canceling General Hospital as well would have definitely done ABC in!
I doubt they would ever have the smarts to bring back AMC and/or OLTL but they should cancel The Chew as well. What an awful waste of an hour on TV!

I'm so happy, now bring back OLTL with some of the best stars of AMC like Farah Fath.  Love and best of luck to all!!  Still never watched on moment of T he Spew or The Revulsion and never will.  ABC daytime continues to skate on thin ice.  Jesse, Angie, Nora and JR got good roles now lets see the rest of the great stars get their great roles, too.

I have loved GH since I was a little girl!!  I am so happy that it will be staying on the air.  I love all of the characters they do an excellent job and they have earned their place among daytime television!!!  I hate all of the talk shows and refuse to watch any of them.  YAY go GH 4 ever!!!

Yeah for General Hospital! I've been watching over 35 years and would really miss it.  I hate the mindless talk shows.  We all can't afford the high fashion and life styles these people talk about.  Having Heather back will undoubtedly bring back a lot of back stabbing drama - Love it!

I'm thrilled that GH will go on, especially since they have been trying to incorporate OLTL characters.  I miss OLTL EVERYDAY.  I still can't believe ABC cancelled it.   They lost soooo many viewers.  Admit to the mistake and put OLTL back on the air.   It would go a long way with all the longtime viewers in regaining their faith in ABC daytime.   Win back the viewers that left .  Shock us ABC.  Do what the fans are begging for.

I was really unhappy when they cancelled OLTL.  It was my favorite soap on ABC.  I'm glad GH will be getting another year but I won't be happy with ABC unless they bring back OLTL.

There are way too many shows like The Chew and The Revolution and I wouldn't watch any of them.  Those kind of show bore me to tears.
