Chuck Lorre Confesses 'Two and a Half' Mistakes

Charlie Sheen's nemesis acknowledges 'heartbreak' and show's slippery footing

By Kenny Herzog Jun 13, 2012 9:26AM
FX may have ordered Charlie Sheen to conceal the gold crown in his Cheshire-cat smile while doing publicity for "Anger Management," but his former pal and "Two and a Half Men" collaborator, Chuck Lorre, is finding very little to grin about. Or at least when it comes to very public falling out with the actor over the course of last year.

Bing:
More on Chuck Lorre | "Two and a Half Men" | Charlie Sheen

The sitcom writer tells Deadline that, “The guy was my friend and colleague for eight and a half years. I don’t think we ever had an argument," adding, “For it to end like that was devastating. I don’t know what to say about it other than I was heartbroken and hurt."

For as how "TAHM" transitioned into the Ashton Kutcher era, Lorre acknowledges, “There was no development process. We actually made all of our mistakes on television…. If you watch the 24 shows we did last year, you can watch us stumbling around trying to figure things out. I think we still are, honestly.”

Now, these are what most of us everyday folk would call "champagne problems," but you gotta feel for Lorre. Relationships change over time, and the shows must go on, but no one -- not even Charlie Sheen -- wants to spend 12 hours a day on set with Ashton Kutcher.

"Two and a Half Men" airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. "Anger Management" premieres Thursday, June 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FX.

We watched the show every week and reruns until Sheen was fired.  We have tried to watch it and really liked Ashton in some of his movies - but - we finally had to agree that Charlie made the show and Ashton cannot replace him.  We have stopped watching also.  A lot of stars go down the same road but are not fired for their actions.  As long as the show was airing and making money I don't understand why Sheen's personal life was a problem.

Charlie Sheen is a grown up hollywood rich kid that acts like a stuck up "im the man" dip shxt. He is what I would call a major douchebag.

It's funny all you people banging on Lorre.  He's a tv show producer like many others.  As long as people watch the show and advertisers buy commercial time it'll be on the air.  If you don't like it you don't have to watch it.  Grow up and turn the channel ...

Two and a Half Men is still absolutely my favorite show.   Kutcher is evolving.  He is good.  It is fascinating to watch how Lorre weaves and re-works the show while going through such a difficult situation and transition.  Lorre is a genius in his craft.   I still get that feeling of awe when the jokes go so well.   Cryer is still wonderful.  His character is getting beyond the "shock" of the abrupt change the show undertook.  The relationship changes between Cryer's character and Kutcher's is starting to endear the viewer to them, as it had with the "brothers."  Kutcher is gaining in his role.  I only wish I could have a smidgen of all their talent.   Two and a Half Men is really a reality show in progress.  To slog though this mortifying situation rather than giving up makes me have sincere admiration for every original star on that show, along with its creators.   My enjoyment of the show increases incrementally with each show as it gains footing again.   Can't wait for Monday!!

Maybe it would have been best to just let the show end. Rather than put Kutcher in...I do not watch the show anymore...just not the same...too bad you can't bring Charlie back...looking forward to his new show...I will be watching it!

I've always been a huge TAHM fan but, I'll continue to watch the reruns with Charlie Sheen.  I've watched 3 shows with Kutcher and decided as much as I like Alan's character I just can't stomach Kutcher.  I'll stick to my reruns.  Missing you Charlie..please come back....!!

YES....I agree, bring Charlie back. I watched the first show and never watched another one. Ashton  Kutcher SUCKS. The show isn't the same without Charlie. And there is an opening to bring him back. Allen wakes up from a bad dream, about Charlie dying. Or Rose has kidnapped Charlie and has been hiding him. Come on BRING CHARLIE BACK. If you don't the show is not going to make it. ''WE WANT CHARLIE BACK''!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kutcher would not be nearly as bad if you'd get rid of the girlfriend. She turns him into a totally whipped spineless dork. One episode suggests their physical relationship leaves quite a bit to be desired, so why does he cow-tow to her anyway? There's nothing funny in her. She doesn't make me laugh she makes me want to puke. Kutcher will never be Sheen, but he can be funny in a different way - just not as long as that gold-digging,  nagging, "holier than thou" with bad teeth is running (ruining) the show.

Please, please bring Charlie back.  I was a devoted fan, now I don't even bother...we all loved Charlie, we lived our lives through Charlie ( who apparently was living his life through the show)!  Please, the show isn't the same, in fact, not even close.  Please, whatever it takes, bring him back.

I watched a couple of episodes with Kutcher and then removed it from my tivo season pass and have not looked back.  I still like the reruns with Charlie.  The show sucks without him.

Bring Charlie back.  Kutcher is a loser and the show is of no interest to me anymore.  I like the last idea...he was locked in Rose's basement.  SOMETHING...but end the hemorraging, will ya?!

Let by gones be by gones and hire Charlie back I agree with the story line from JD harper below, Charlie is alive and locked up in Rose's basement....rescue him and let the show continue.

What we need is another dream scene like Dallas - get rid of the entire season, start with Charlie still dead but all was a dream for Alan.  Let him inherit the house and find a whole lot of new problems, Ashton added nothing to the show unfortunately and was just a horrible story line ...

No one on that show is worth the extraordinary salaries.  Kill the show.

Knew it would SUCK without Charlie......watched the first few shows, I was right. Cancel the show before you really make fools of yourselves!! Kutcher is terrible, Cryer is very good but cannot carry the show. Its done, stick a fork in it!!

Chuck, Charlie has problems, but he is a straight shooter. Sometimes he does not know what he is aiming at.... Sorry you got your feelings hurt! Cry baby...

The show stinks to high heaven. Kutcher is lousy and Cryer is too weak to carry the show. Lousy storylines and writing. Let the show die.
