Shonda Rhimes allays fans' fears

Executive producer says 'Grey's Anatomy' cast is sticking around

By Mekeisha Madden Toby Feb 15, 2013 12:53PM

'Grey's Anatomy' '/' ABCDr. Meredith Grey and her pals quit on Thursday night's highly-charged installment of "Grey's Anatomy," but that doesn't mean the actors playing those roles are leaving.

"We're not going to see any cast departures," Shonda Rhimes, the showrunner behind the medical drama told THR of the plot twist, in which five doctors resigned from the hospital so they could buy it.

After that shocking plane crash that killed Mark (Eric Dane) and Lexie (Chyler Leigh), the hospital awarded the survivors -- Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Callie (Sara Ramirez), Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) --  a settlement of $15 million each, bankrupting the facility.

Now the doctors have decided to save Seattle Grace with that same money and just have to find a partner to help them. But can their plan work? And what about Owen (Kevin McKidd) and the others? How will these resignations affect them?

"You're going to see them feel the burden of what they've done," Rhimes said. "It's not that they weren't right to do it, but there's definitely a sense of resentment that comes from other people because they have this money and the money has now made everything harder for everyone else."

"Grey's Anatomy" airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

I think it is safe to say it's time for a change . I loved this show once a long time ago . But this story line  is stupid. Get back to what made it fun to watch . Time for more scenes out of the hospital. It is time for Owen to step down . They should have kept Chief Webber. The cast itself is so talented it's time for the writers to utilize those talents. I'm glad ABC has other shows like Castle to watch .This show needs to come back in a major way or I think it would be safe to say it has JUMPED THE SHARK!

It's a television show folks.  It's not real!!  This is like people that write in to a soap opera telling them "Who really done it" and they have the wrong individual charged. It's " make believe" a television show, relax and enjoy. By the way, these "actors" are not real doctors and nurses they're "actors" so if you ever run into them on the street don't ask them medical questions. Just enjoy getting into the story line , I do, I love the suspense but it is not real life.

LOL  Wow, there are some seriously disturbed people on here.  IT IS A SHOW. It is not real cannot live YOUR OWN life vicariously through it. Thumb me down all you want, I won't be viewing this page again so I won't know if you do anyway. LOL  And Bailey didn't do anything wrong in the last episode, but the two before it she acted like a jerk to the others and she needed to be shut down. Have a good day, people!!!!  :>)

why cant they just not take the money? and why would they need more? if the amount they took was what did the hospital in it should be enough to get it out of trouble. They make enough on their salaries to live comfortably they do not need millions, they could give it back and be fine. they dont need to go through quitting and buying the hospital. i understand this makes for a better story line but it makes for a stupid thought process. make a donation! they love to be doctors they would have to quit what they love! so i agree this story line is far fetched and leading me to think the show is reaching for things and going places i am going to quickly lose interest in. which is sad because I love or loved my Grey's Anatomy! Well lets see what happens!

Oh, on another topic, this show has been on for years. You can't be naive to think it's just going to mindlessly go on. It WILL come to a stop. Probably next season will be the last. Get used to it.

Why the thumbs down? Why should Bailey treat the others like crap just because they were in a plane crash??  I usually don't give a flying rat's poop who thumbs down anything, but this doesn't make sense? What do you disagree with? Seriously?????!!!!!!

Agree with aloha1234.  This show is so awesome and can go in so many directions.  I hope Shonda Rhimes reads the comments or someone for the show does and take some of us longtime die hard Greys fans ideas and can just spin with it.  The characters can be taken to new heights and struggles and challenges and inspiration for real life to inspire so many ways to go with the show.  If I don't get to watch I DVR cuz can't miss this show.  I already miss Private Practice so please don't take this one off.  Take it and shine with it.  Thanks Shonda for two great shows without the voilence TV has turned into or the reality shows.  Keep it going.

Yes, Bailey has already started mouthing off and I have been waiting for someone to really tell her off. Resenting these people because of the plane crash they were in is absolutely horrible and disgusting and I wish I could be the one character to get in Bailey's face. She wouldn't open her stupid mouth again.

I hate the direction that Grey's is going.  Stick to the medicine, the traumas, the miracle saves.  All of that other crap is boring.

I love he show except for when the doctors are performing surgery, they are having personal discussions amoung themselves.  I wouldn't want a doctor working on me when their full attention is on something other than the patient.  Let's be real in this case.

This is the perfect way, as I had anticipated it months ago, to conclude the plane crash plot line. It can be used to allow the characters to expand their roles, to show their excitement about medicine and caring for patients, like reliving intern years, but with experience and the authority to make actual changes to improve practices and patient outcomes. If done correctly, this could revitalize the hospital and the series. This is an outstanding opportunity, rarely given to an established show.  They can redesign sets, add new teaching opportunities for interns and attendings, add new characters, etc., as the possibilities are almost endless. This could be a ratings boost, if done well!

I LOVE THIS SHOW!  PLEASE KEEP IT COMING FOR A FEW MORE YEARS!  One of the best drama shows out there, love all the characters.   All you haters it must be a good show for it to be on so long.  Heres a suggestion if you don't watch keep your comments to your self!!!

Dont watch the show but everytime I seea headline its about them killing more of the cast off? Seems like if this much traged were to hit a hospital in real life there would be inquiries and the place would be closed down.

Never seen an episode of this show, which I am now very happy about, as it seem as if it just might be the most idiotic thing on television.

In my best Peter Griffith ...Who the Hell cares

i read this headline and had to read it!!!   i just cant believe this show is still on!!  wasn't it pretty much worn out 10 year's ago!!

Please end this pretentiously lame **** show and make somethign actually worth watching. currently really only CBS and fox have anything worth a damn to watch. CW only has supernatural. CBS must be killin' it.....ABC is crap and NBC is pathetic.
