Report: Chevy Chase Uses N-Word on Set

Actor issues apology after production on 'Community' briefly shuts down

By Corey Levitan Oct 22, 2012 9:48AM

Chevy Chase dropped the n-word during a tirade on the set of "Community" on Friday, according to Deadline.

It was not a Michael Richards situation, at least in that Chase's heart seemed in the right place. Reportedly, the 69-year-old former "Saturday Night Live" star was protesting how much more bigoted his "Community" character could be made by the TV series' writers. (The racial epithet served as an example of how he might next be asked to refer to the characters played by actors Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown.)

Still, "right" is far from an accurate description of the place Chase's head was in. Production was briefly shut down, according to TVLine, and an apology issued by Chase on the set. But the damage was already done, and continues to reverberate through a shocked Internet this morning.

This was not the first unfortunate behavior engaged in by Chase, either. In March, after being roasted for walking off set during some crucial filming, he called the show's former executive producer a "fat" "alcoholic" in a profanity-laden voicemail that was leaked online.

And last month, he told the Huffington Post UK  that taking the "Community" role was "a big mistake" he made "because I have three daughters and a wife, and I figured out I might as well make some bread every week, so I can take care of them in the way they want."

At times like these, be glad he's Chevy Chase and you're not.

"Community" airs Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

its offensive ,and used by most to start an arguement or gloat the fact the N's can say N while watching decent whites squirm of embarrasment for them being so childish, the fact remains if you think of all blacks as children you have a better chance tolerating them in public, because not only are they insecure in their race they are insecure in their abiblity to take a grown up attitude and just revert back to the child. In private they can call each other n's all day its their business but in public without regard for me ,well we will fight every time

This is going too far. the "N" word is the worst word in our lexicon now somehow. Can't say it in public in ANY context. Here's a newsflash: most people are still willing to say it when with family and friends. Example: I said something about the n-word to my brothers and grandpa. My grandpa said "What's the n-word?" I said "****", kind of quiet, even though we were in the mountains, no one else around. Is that wrong? Will I be berated or have my comment taken down for typing the word in a certain context?

It seems to me everyone on here complaining about Mr. Chase was missing the point. He was questioning whether or not he had to go to the extreme of using the word **** to make his 'character' as extremely bigoted/racist as he could be. In America, using that word is so inflamatory; he used that one as point to the writers and cast. I don't think the cast were offended (I, a black man am not) because they understood his point. He could've used any other offensive word Americans are well versed in to denigrate any race. He probably chose that one because everyone knows it and it always offends someone, either white or black or any other caring people. I personally hate the word because it's stupid and it doesn't describe me, but people throw it around as a regular part of their daily conversations. My stupid theory is black folks using it are practicing a little bit of self hate. Rappers using it are not talking about the best people in the world, people that they admire. Listen to the lyrics sometime.

I can't believe production was shut down for this nonsense. I would maybe understand if he was lashing out in anger or something. An apology was issued? Good Lord. People are way to freaking sensitive about that word, and I think often it is white people who freak out about it and not black people.
really! Who cares. He's playing a character.  Has anyone heard of Louis Ck?  Are we now going to sanitize the writer's ability to characterize real people, who  talk and think exactly like Chevy was suggesting?

the way people talk on cell phones in public on elevators in grocery stores and the way they talk to their friends in public is a disgrace, to be submitted to their torturous vocabulary of f's and n's while with my son is a sin and we are made to be a part is just why one reason I began legally carrying a pistol, as I feel if asking them to cool it will only end in a fight I am willing to defend my rights as well,The N's be they woman or men have no sense of decency and leaves little to say except they are rude animals goading a white man into a fight wich I can take it to the next level while being left with no recourse,Its just 1 reason why some people walk on the edge day in and day out with little regard for an animal talking with no respect for their fellow man. They are no better than the homos who subject an average family with indignations

Nonsense.  Chase has been a NON-racist for the many years I've enjoyed him, and he continues to be.  He was ATTEMPTING to show that despite the efforts of himself and all the rest of us for over 40 years, racist goons STILL exist.  They STILL use this hateful speech.  Are we now trying to simply pretend that is not true, just what - use whiteout on the proof existent of continuing racism, because we are so afraid to be treated like him over this?  What a ridiculous society we have evolved into:  We can use the worst profanity and vulgarity and that's okay.  But point out that racism STILL exists and racist words are STILL used in a play - ohhhh no, cover my ears.  Take your heads out of your handheld devices and grab some real life for a change.
never gonna happen.
i am really tired of hearing the n-word, by ALL races.

I'm personally offended by all the f-bombs so many people drop in public, but according to the PC crowd, I have no right to be offended because the f-bombers are just exercising their right of free speech.  But, if someone uses a term the PC police deems offensive, all hell breaks loose, free speech be damned.

I'm tired of these double standards, and I'm tired of other people telling me how to think, how to talk, what to eat, who to vote for, and how to live.  Using MY rights of free speech, I'm going to offer those of the PC persuasion two little words that I wish they would heed: Go. Away.

I am so sick of all this whiny **** apologizing -- You said it, own it and roll with it.  They had to shut the production down because he said this?  Really? I wonder if Donald Glover would have said Peckerwood or Cracker would they have shut down the set then too?  What a piece of joke.   And what's even more sad than all of that -- this is the only goddamn time I can remember hearing Chevy Chases name in the last 10 years.  Any publicity is good publicity, especially when you're this un-funny double handed smack.

It's about time people grow the f*&k up and stop letting words control them. "Oh my god, he said something I don't like!"
Then walk the f*&k away and stop listening. Really. Try it.

I think if the media would stop making such a big deal about this stuff it would help too. Give it a rest already!

Let's put an end to politically correct crap....political correctness is offensive and unintelligent....when African Americans quit using ****, THEN start bitching!
