B.J. Novak to guest on 'The Mindy Project'
Mindy Kaling's former 'Office' mate signs on for a two-episode guest slot

After a long-running courtship, "The Office" finally lost its perhaps second-best-loved couple (after Jim and Pam, of course) when Kelly Kapoor bailed on Ryan Howard to head off to Miami (Ohio, not Florida) with a hot doc played by Sendhil Ramamurthy. And who could blame her? As fun as it was, that relationship wasn't going anywhere, right? But it was fun.
Bing: More on "The Mindy Project" | B.J. Novak | Plus: Q&A with Mindy Kaling
So now Mindy Kaling, rocking it on her new FOX hit "The Mindy Project," has brought her old TV beau (and former real-life love turned best friend) B.J. Novak on for a two-episode guest arc -- and yes, he will play a love interest for her character, Mindy Lahiri.
Novak will play Jamie, a "charming Latin professor who bonds with Mindy over their love of a dead language," a source told Vulture.com. But this might just be another dramatic triangle. According to the report, Jamie will have "a friend" named Lucy, who will be played by Eva Amurri (Susan Sarandon's kid).
Novak won't be the first "Office" star to guest on the new comedy -- that would be Ed Helms, who also played a romantic interest -- and he likely won't be the last, either. "I love those guys, and if our show were lucky enough to be on for many years, I can't imagine a world where I didn't ask them to be on the show," she told MSN TV earlier this year. And specifically regarding B.J., they have to tread carefully, she noted, because "I want [viewers] to see my character as my character as my character, rather than, 'Oh, it's Kelly and Ryan again!' [But] I love him and I love working with him."
Hmmm, could that mean a more substantial stint on the show for Novak once "The Office" wraps its ninth and final season? Seems likely!
"The Mindy Project" airs Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
