'Live! With Kelly' Ratings Climb Without Regis
A stream of guest co-hosts help viewership jump 12 percent
Bing: More about 'Live! With Kelly'
While gossip jock Perez Hilton and The New York Post reported a massive 35 percent ratings drop for "Live! with Kelly" since Regis Philbin's exit episodes, ABC says their numbers are off, but more importantly, they may be missing the bigger picture.
Yes, "Live" has lost the excitement ratings surrounding the exit of a daytime icon, which peaked at a whopping 9.45 million viewers for Philbin's final episode, but Ripa is not expected to measure up to those major event ratings, even with the help of weighty co-hosts like Neil Patrick Harris, Jerry Seinfeld, Andy Cohen, Josh Groban, Michael Buble, Jonah Hill and Kevin Jonas.
What more, when compared with last year's numbers in the same time period, “Live” is actually pulling ahead without Philbin, according to the New York Times and ABC. Ratings have climbed 14 percent among the coveted daytime audience of women ages 25 to 54 and 12 percent overall.
In raw numbers, "Live!" boasted 3.93 million viewers for Nov. 21 to Dec. 11, compared with 2010's 3.5 million in the same four-week period. At the same time, the audience of women ages 25 to 54 rose to one million from last year's 878,000.
The real test, of course, will come when Ripa has a permanent host at her side. In the meantime, "Live! With Kelly" is doing just fine with a revolving door of hot guys and when the show returns with new episodes in January, Ripa has a host of jocks on the schedule. Football star and former Kim Kardashian beau Reggie Bush will serve as guest host on Monday, Jan. 9, followed by Carl Edwards and Apolo Anton Ohno.
"Live! With Kelly" airs weekdays in syndication.
I honestly don't know how Kelly has remained on TV.
Kelly walked on the Regis show and took it over like it was her own show.
How full of herself she is .
She ruined Regis for me. As soon as she joined the show, I stopped watching.
I loved Regis but can't stand Kelly. I don't know how poor Regis put up with her.
No wonder he retired so soon!
I am glad I have plenty of other talk shows to pick from in the morning. TG for cable.
I believe Kelly Ripa is sitting in that spot for a reason - because she deserves to be! You were THE BEST person for the job when you were hired and you still are! I'll continue to watch no matter who they sit next to you.
You have the ability to get along with every person they sit next to you and that is something to be admired.
An East Coast Girl
Sorry, but I watched the show with Jerry co-hosting the first three days, not that great and actually seemed a little awkward. Then I watched for the next week but lost interest quick. I loved Regis and Kelly and watched almost every morning for the past 8 years. Kelly alone or with someone else is just not that good, and definitely not interesting enough for me to want to spend an hour of my time watching everyday. Sorry Kelly :(
REGIS & KATHIE LEE had the chemistry! "Live" cannot re-capture that!
At this point Kelly's Co Host could help the show survive, NICK CANNON would be excellent, he's young, funny and very real. His presence on AGT has made a huge difference!
Carson Kressley, Chad Ocho or Brian Williams (News) would also work!
And yes, Kelly was much prettier when she was a little heavier, as a role model for her young fans she should encourage a healthy body.
She is doing a great job trying to keep the ratings up.
This is simply a matter of the ABC spin doctors working overtime. Of course they aren't going to say the show's ratings have dropped. On this matter, why would Perez and the Post be lying about the ratings? Is ABC being truthful about the ratings on their other shows? How is "The Chew" doing?
I was a loyal viewer for 25 years, but I cannot stand Ripa alone. I didn't like the way ABC treated Regis in the end, either.
