Carell spills on why he's skipping 'Office' finale

Funnyman responds to news that he won't show up at Dunder-Mifflin again

A week after Greg Daniels announced at the Television Critics Association upfronts that one-time show centerpiece Steve Carell won't be returning for "The Office" finale in May, Carell is finally telling fans why.

"I just don't think it was right for the character, because the character had an arc within the story and grew and evolved past the idea of the documentary," Carell told "Access Hollywood" at the Sundance premiere of his new comedy "The Way Way Back" this week.
 
 
Which is not to say that Carell won't be celebrating with his former cast mates. "I'm really good friends with everybody on the cast and with [executive producer] Greg Daniels, and I want to go back to say 'Hi,' certainly, before it all ends," Carell said. "But I just thought, in terms of character, it didn't make sense."

Will Michael Scott be missed? Undoubtedly. But his pals understand. "His goodbye was so perfect and it was so amazing," old "Office" mate Jenna Fischer told "Access Hollywood." "We always welcome him back, but at the same time, I do feel that he went out really well." 

In his announcement last week, producer Daniels agreed, saying that Carell's Michael Scott had his moment and that the season nine-series finale will be "the goodbye the rest of the show gets to have."

"The Office" airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

That's ****!! He was the show and should have some type of role in the finale. Everyone else on the show are complete **** and he is the only reason the show got popular.

He had a good exit! There is no show without Michael though and they should have quit while they were ahead. The last two seasons have been terrible and this last one almost unwatchable. I can see why he is content with not returning. But documentaries often update you on where people are at presently so you would thing they would do an update from Colorado, he doesn't need to necessarily come back to the office, I do agree that his character outgrew that.

damn, i really wanted to see someone walk into an office, and have Michael Scott slowly spin around in his chair.

i call bull sh**! im sorry, but lets get real. Michael would LOVE to make a big entrance.... for instance, in the episode where they return from the "michael scott paper company" he has Pam and Ryan hold a hula hoop and he bursts through it! That episode reflected what actually happened to the real show when Carell left. He does everything over the top and wants the attention. Thats why he was going to jump off the roof to demonstrate depression, thats why they had a funeral for a bird when ed truck died! C'mon Michael's ending was beautiful and romantic but it was as if he died. If he left on such a good note, he would have visited. I have worked at the same place for 10 years and have seen numberou previous employees visit since they left on a good note. We got to see Roy's wedding, we hated Roy. Honestly I hated seeing Roy again. I'm a big fan of Steve Carell but not for this move. I respect the fact that you are holding Michael's departure on a pedestal because it was a good episode BUT quit being so techincal. The fans want an encore, give them one.

Since when was Steve Carell ever involved in the creative aspects of "The Office," other than playing a character?  If the creators/writers want to bring him back for even a cameo for the finale episode, Carell should get on that bandwagon and see where it takes his character as the show closes.  He just sounds so snobby when he says, "I just don't think it was right for my character."  What bulls**t!!!

The BEST way to end the show would be to have "Michael" return to say Hi/Bye somehow...I agree with everyone else; whether you wanna admit it or not, Michael MADE that show and that's why it's been downhill ever since he left. He SHOULD return for a brief something or other.

i could never understand why the writers would leave out any updates from michael scott.

not even a funny email to dwight, pam or jim. they missed a huge opportunity. carrell wouldn't

even have to be on the show!  oh, well.

I'm a fan of the show, regardless...but let's be honest, it hasn't been the same since Carell left.  I understand his final episode was appropriate and made sense; but it wouldn't hurt as proper tribute to the fans, to have him make some type of appearance on the finale (whether some crazy type of video conference with his wife and new life in Colorado to the gang in Dunder Mifflin); it just seems to make sense.  I don't know...Hollywood never seems to appease to the masses regardless; and no matter how the finale ends, there will always be complaints.  They just have to have him somehow!! My two cents...I'm out!!
