Animator Alex Hirsch is living the dream. Not only is his first animated show, "Gravity Falls," debuting on the Disney Channel next week, but he's the voice of one of the program's funniest characters and his co-stars are some of the most revered comedic actors in the business.

A trippy mix between "Scooby-Doo" and "The X-Files," the series follows the misadventures of twin sister and brother Dipper (Jason Ritter, "The Event") and Mabel (Kristen Schaal, "30 Rock" and "Flight of the Conchords") and their crotchety uncle Stan, aka Grunkle Stan (Hirsch) in a tourist town called Gravity Falls.

The fun begins when Dipper stumbles upon an elusive book and discovers it is the key to unlocking the town's mysterious secrets.

Recurring guest stars include "Saturday Night Live" alum Will Forte and Stephen Root ("Justified" and "Office Space"). But Hirsch is most proud of casting funny woman Schaal as Mabel, a character loosely based on his real-life twin sister.

"She is so funny," Hirsch said of Schaal. "Everything that comes out of her mouth is funny and as soon as I saw her on 'Flight of the Conchords,' I thought, 'Where did they find her?'"

Plus: Prime-time soaps: Then and now | Also: Summer reality TV | Here comes the pride

Hirsch said Schaal's performance on "Flight of the Conchords" as Mel, the two-man band's only groupie, made him think of his sister.

"Growing up, my sister was a huge fan of all the boy bands like 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys and she thought of them the way Kristen's character thought of the guys on 'Flight of the Conchords,'" Hirsch said. "And I thought, 'Oh my gosh. I know this girl. If I ever make a show about my sister, she's the voice.'"

"Gravity Falls" premieres Friday, June 29, at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on the Disney Channel.
